clear in front of the homes or businesses. doug: it's fun for some people, but not for others. stormwatch7's team coverage of the winter whiplash starts now. >> one, two, three. go, go, go! jonathan: 7 is literally on your side after the snowstorm. that is suzanne kennedy trying to push the prius out of the snow bank. michelle: she is all about it. clean-up could take time. dangerous conditions. this light pole taken out in gaithersburg. alison: the northeast hit the hardest. this car out of control in connecticut. you know the fearless girl we showed you and the famous bull on wall street? look at that. coated in new york. nor'easter leaving its mark. jonathan: here was another burst of snow. we saw flurries from time to time. sometimes heavy and sometimes light. michelle: look at the picture between us

passing through the snow there, this is just at around 2:00. it's like white-out conditions. alison: you couldn't see the capitol dome from the view from pennsylvania avenue. as the storm clears out, we are monitoring a frigid finish. michelle: abc7 continues storm watch coverage from crews around the d.m.v. jonathan: from the cleanup to conditions on the roads as they improve today, let's start off with the temperatures. they are falling. stormwatch7's doug hill is tracking all of it. if they didn't shovel they will have ice to contend with. doug: the problem now is the snow is on the ground, it's done. we have a couple of snowshowers that won't amount to anything. we have had melting and slash, standing water from the rain, the melted sleet. the temperatures now in the 30's and the 40's. tonight the temperatures will drop like a rock so everything is that is wet is going to freeze. so we have the potential of very hazardous driving

puddles along roads where the water melts and the streams and comes down over the roadways because the temperatures will be in the upper teens to low 20's by morning. that cold enough to negate effect of the brine or the salt on the road. still comfortable now relatively knowing that the average temperature should be 55 degrees. we are far from that. that is the numbers around the area here. the chills are dropping into the teens and the 20. it will be like early january tomorrow morning. we'll be in the 20's by midnight. chills in the teens by that time. in the morning we are forecasting low temperatures, the air temperatures. 19 to 23 around the area. the slush and the water and the mush, well, that is going to create problems around the area for certain. we are going to see the wind chills make it feel like it's in the teens. all the snow we had here, even with the temperatures in the 30's are starting to melt away. it hasn't melted yesterday.

happened in one of the towns, frederick, maryland, where they had about eight inches of snow. that's where we find brad bell. brad? brad: you mentioned snowshowers. we are getting one now. it's a flurry. it's pretty out here. if town of frederick is coming back to life. market and church. most of the sidewalks have been shuffled and cleared off. you can look to market street itself and you can see there is slush but mostly the pavement is wet. that is a big improvement from what we saw early this morning. at daybreak even i-270 was treacherous. as we traveled south this morning we found the road snow-covered and also seemingly covered with plows working to clear the snow. across maryland, the state police reported more than 200 incidents on roadways since 8:00 p.m. last night. we spot two cars in

strip. the driver telling us he slid off the roadway. by mid-morning the salt and the plows had the upper hand with every road we travel down to wed pavement. the highest snow total was in the town of therma. seven inches. the chore for rob and his son dylan and robin. >> when i woke up there were eight or nine inches. throughout the day it has slowly gotten smaller. brad: his complaint is the snow is heavy to shovel. doug is talking about the falling temperatures. look at all this water. it is everywhere. it is going to freeze up as the temperatures drop. that will be a problem not just on the roads but people walking around here as well. so tomorrow morning we will talk about black ice. in frederick, brad bell, abc7

news. >> the issue of black ice is a concern across northern virginia. vdot will be retreating a lot of the roads. they don't want the refreeze to be a huge problem tonight. this is snowtrak7. visibility here in the vehicle last night and this morning was not good. today things are doing just fine. in leesburg, they got four to six inches of snow and like what brad talked about, the heavy wet stuff. earlier this morning the dugout was happening all over leesburg. we saw the snow shovels, the snowplows, the tractors. they were everywhere. it didn't seem like it at times. there were more snowplows on roads than the cars and truck. people were hard at work getting things cleared out. loudoun county schools were closed so kids were home. but driving there were difficult conditions early in morning. people were sliding out here

part the roads were clear and the people we spoke to were pleased with the condition of the roads this morning. >> the roads are good. just got to be careful with the slush in the middle but otherwise it's good. >> freeways were clear. my neighborhood was clear. can't complain. >> i'm worried that the water will freeze up at night and turn to ice. >> that is the concern. the refreeze. you are looking at the puddle. this is as the temperatures drop to turn into a situation later tonight. coming down a small hill. you don't think it is much. but you can slide out easily. vdot has 4,000 pieces of equipment and they will retreat the roads to reduce possibility of the refreeze or and reduce dangerous conditions on the roads. jeff goldberg, abc7 news. alison: as you know, this has been a monster storm. from the

blanketing streets in pennsylvania overnight and this morning to upstate new york. it was a big one. check out this shot. we have one from central park. it was quiet as the snow fell. we have a look at the impact in the northeast. >> we are in new york city pelted by the freezing rains and the high rain. we got less snow than predicted here but it's still a mess. even with the mess, the sleet on top of snow. the mayor just announcing he still wants everyone off the roads. only essential workers should be on the roads. they want to get it cleaned up. there will be school in new york tomorrow after they have everything cleaned. boston announced they still won't have school. they are getting the brunt of the storm right now as it continues to barrel up the coast. the

since the storm moved a little to the west but it's still a mess here and will be the rest of the day. the snow is still falling. we will have the winds continuing tonight. alison: you mentioned boston. they are not strangers to nor'easters but they are getting hit hard. what else are you hearing about how they are handling the storm? >> you know, as you mentioned, boston is prepared for the storm. six days away for spring. but it doesn't mean much in the northeast. they had 5,000 vehicles on the road throughout massachusetts getting ready, putting salt out on the roads. they are taking a proactive stance say due to the heavy snow and the high wind gusts as well. up to 50, 60-mile-per-hour on the coast. they are canceling school for tomorrow to make sure everyone stays safe. alison: thank you so much. jonathan: some schools did cancel and the kids were happy. maybe you saw them out today building snowmen

michelle: remember this from last week? two guys stealing guns in rockville? they hadn't been caught. days after that burglary three suspects hit a place in chantilly. stephen tschida looks at the similarities. stephen: they loaded up on handguns ands longguns. in mere seconds they made off with a cache of weapons that police fear will end up in the hands of violent criminals. days later in whiles away, three suspects pull off a similar heist saturday. burglary alarm alerted police. they found at the gun store they found it in similar shape to the one hit in rockville. 30 guns gone from this location.

nobody the investigators are comparing notes to determine whether the same suspect hit both stores. where a ring of criminals is targeting gun shops. the search for the suspect continues. stephen tschida, abc7 news. jonathan: california man blocked iy4n traffic and savagely beaten. this is dash cam video from san francisco. you can see the bikers performing tricks on road and acting like idiots. alex was trying to get through them. he tried to exit the road and he made contact with one of the riders. then a black car steps in and cuts him off. then the bikers surround him. he gets out of the car and that is when he is attacked. >> if there weren't so many people that videotaping the video they could have gotten away with killing me on the side of the road.

legs, broken nose and abrasions and the attackers are still out there. alison: ivanka trump getting out of the fine jewelry business. the president of the brand says they will focus on affordable fashion yulery. -- jewelry. the higher end collection had items for thousands of dollars. michelle: now a real head scratcher from nordstrom. these are the clear knee jeans. nordstrom says they have a futuristic feel. one pair is $95. jonathan: really? michelle: mom jeans are never cool as well as dad jeans so they are trying to add a hip factor to it. jonathan: they are gearing it to women. do you like it? michelle: you could catch on. your legs get sweaty.

jonathan: $95. i look at that and think never -- alison: is that dry clean only? jonathan: you'd see the scabs on our knees. never good. alison: different. jonathan: abc7 is on traffic watch. trenice bishop in the traffic center. trenice: those jeans don't look good for anyone but we have road conditions at this hour. the big picture map. there is nothing but screen on the screen. the travel lane is open. we have back to better in the d.c. area. we have a couple incidents but it's been quiet for the past few hours. if you make your way out, we have report of a stall off to the right shoulder of the ramp from the inner loop to i-95 and springfield at the interchange. can't see anything. this may be to the top left side of the screen if it's any activity we may see. for the most part you can see that everyone else is

good through the area. look at the beltway. nice and quiet and life. usually on tuesday we have bumper to bumper traffic. but today with the folks at home and the school out for the day, volume is light. 95 southbound. no report of issues from the mixing bowl. 66, no reported issues east or westbound between centreville and the beltway. michelle: thank you. because d.c. schools are open, that means children are out walking home from school. that is why the sidewalks have to be clear. so nobody is forced to the streets. d.c. bureau chief sam ford continues team coverage from northwest. is it a slippery walk home? sam: in some areas. this is the sidewalk be front of walker jones

the sidewalk is cleared. but the next box it's not school property but i don't think a child would have trouble moving through that. walker jones and the other schools in d.c. had classes as normal today. across the d.c., children made their way to schools and only two-hour delay while the neighboring jurisdictions all shut the doors. in d.c., the accumulation of the snow between one and two inches. at most were three in some area. city crews had the streets clear early while some students and the parents are miffed that d.c. did not shut down today. a number of parents supported mayor bowser's decision not to close. >> it makes it easier for the parents. you can go to work, right? in that sense it's good. i don't think eva was happy today. she wanted a snow day. >> it don't matter. as soon as you are going to school i don't care what it is doing outside. i'm not mad a

the parking lots are in fine shapes. but the puddles will freeze solidly unless they are treated with salt or chemicals. the air temperature in the 40's. 37 at washington, d.c. 42 in warrenton. 37 at joint base andrews. dealing with the wids speeds that are consistent now. the winds will dry a little bit but not that much. the second thing is dry wind chills low. there is colder air tonight. at the moment the temperatures are well above freezing and feels like 20's in most spot. but tonight with the combination of lower temperatures and the strong northwesterly winds it will feel colder. satellite and radar now and a few areas of the snowshowers. there

and hagerstown and frederick. no significant accumulations. we will get into the air circulating around the storm center. long island, new york, still getting heavy. the history of the storm is too close to the coast. it brought in so much warm air we had a rain/snow line farther east than we thought. hence the snow amount lower in the area but no stop to the havoc. we will be in the low teens for most areas tonight the way it feels. tomorrow morning it will feel like 2 in winchester. 1 below in luray. 6 at manassas. 10 downtown. it won't

ocean and chesapeake bay. dulles, seeing the sunshine at times. the temperatures are 37 degrees. tonight after the sunset the temperatures drop and more so hour by hour through the metro area. upper teens and the lower 20's outside the city. that with the strong gusty winds that continue. wind chills are single digit and teens. tomorrow morning there are icy spots. it's moderate range for thursday. not much concerns on friday. and by the weekend we are warming up and we are out of the woods. we show you pictures around the area. one place that picked up decent snowfall. rockville, maryland. that is where kevin lewis has been on duty. what are the folks dealing with north of the city? >> mod

moderate conditions here. this afternoon really light traffic and many people enjoyed a mid-march snow day. around 400 snowplows and salt spreaders kept the montgomery county roads clear tuesday. still a truck managed to hit a pole and there were downed power lines. there were crews with cherry pickers worked diligently to restore electricity. midschool teacher got cardio after the snow blower gave out in the wet, slushy snow. >> i was doing okay until it threw it on the driveway and it bogged down. had to use a shovel. >> the weather not bad enough to st

forced hundreds of cancellation and delays at reagan and dulles airports. 220 cancellations at reagan. 159 at dulles. airports like chicago o'hare and boston logan had 300 to 400 cancellations. that had a ripple effect. most of the major runways at the airports are good to go but airlines are trying to catch up and get flights back in the air. if you are heading north, prepare for delays. south? not so much. >> catch a flight from reagan airport. new york. >> the flight is on time. it's in the air right now. everything is looking good. >> so even though some

on the roads. traffic is moving fine here on the major roads. not all roads look this good. we will check out other roads as the newscast goes on to see how they are doing off the major roads. in the georgetown area, tom roussey, abc7 news. jonathan: thanks. on the eastern shore, the big concern was the beach erosion. big waves pound the beaches there but the water stayed far enough back. that is good. the rough sees looked like they would get up over the sand tunes but they did stay on the seaside of the dunes. check out the waves. it's sheering off the top of the waves. that is how strong the winds are. kids, parents, be the first to know if you get another day off by text alert. choose the school system you belong to.

he will show us the threat isn't over even after the storm. q: we are outside in the cold in front of the jefferson memorial. jack frost is doing a number on the cherry blossoms here. the proof is on the ground. take a look. you will notice a few of the blossoms, buds are on the ground in the snow. this is all due to the snow. all due to the cold weather. you will notice brown spots on the petals. that is frost damage. the trees here are taking a beating. >> some of these that are still tightly wrapped in the bud may be okay with the cold temperature but the concerns is the one like this. petal is out, blossom is almost complete. you see brown around the edges. the brown is indicative of damage or loss to the blossoms. q: that said, they still expect a full bloom, which would mean 70% of the trees to blossom

michelle: life must go on where sick people are concerned. cheryl conner shows us the work today at food and friends. cheryl: the food prep and packaging. it does not slow down the work inside food and friends in northeast washington. >> the clients need to eat when it's snowing as well as when the weather is fair. cheryl: this is one of volunteers that battled the winter weather to make sure the sick clients were served. we followed a crew on their way out. several hundred peoples make it to kitchen tables in d.c., maryland, virginia. 71-year-old james howard says he is stuck in the house on a day like this. >> the weather is inclement. i can't get out. chronic arthritis. i can't get around. i can't get to the store easily. >> the volunteers and the employees had to drive through

announcer: now "abc7 news at 5:00". on your side. larry: just when you their it was over. tonight it could freeze again. we have team coverage of the winter whiplash tonight starting with stormwatch7's chief meteorologist doug hill and the forecast. doug: we have a band of snowshower north of the metro area pivoting from north/northwest, south/southeast. enhanced area north of frederick. it will spread eastward. we have another one in cumber land. a little more snowshowers but it's north of the district. the tendency for the snowshowers will diminish and will remain cloudy, gusty and turning colder. it looks for the temperatures to drop as low to 24 degrees by early tomorrow morning. with the gusty winds the chills, the way it feels l

digits and the teens. needless to say the cold air will refreeze everything out there where it refreezes. dangerous walking and travel and potential for sure. check this out by late tonight. wind chills are in the low erteens and the single degrees. it's 7 in andrews and 7 in baltimore. as we get through the day there could be few flurries. the main theme of tomorrow's weather is windy with the wind chills in the teens all day long. tomorrow night, another refreeze as the temperatures once again go low. but there is a little hope at the end of the tunnel. we do see pulling out of this getting through friday and in the weekend with the slightly mild temperatures. we check out the next ten days coming up in 15 minutes. alison: we'll see you then. as you well know, some part of the area saw minimal amount of snow while others needed a bulldozer here to help clear
