sources are now saying the couple is trying to mend fences. does this mean they're getting back together? it is thursday, march 23rd. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." >> we do say good morning to you on this thursday. we're going to start with that deadly attack in london. a new day starting and the investigation in the early stages. >> so here is a live look at london this morning. this whole thing happened right in the heart of the city where tourists visit every day. government officials also gather. in this case, the prime minister was just a few more yards away. >> these streets normally this early morning hour would have many people starting to get to work, many tourists making their way throughout the westminster part of london. you can see that bridge which is familiar to many people is shut down at this point because of that investigation. but parliament is expected to reopen today. this after that horrible attack.

crews removed the car the lone attacker used to mow down pedestrians on westminster bridge. this was the scene we watched here in our studio just moments ago, the car being removed. he mowed down pedestrians on westminster bridge before crashing and fatally stabbing a police officer just inside the gates of parliament. >> now, by the time officers is ended the rampage by shooting that attacker dead, five people -- or shooting the attacker, five people were dead including the gunman and at least 40 injured, most of them on that bridge. >> i saw the car plowed into a lady. and i think it was a lady. i'm not 100% sure. underneath the wheel and could hear screams and then we heard gunshots again. as we looked along the bridge because we were only crawling along the bridge, there was bodies literally. >> must have been ten. >> 10, 12 bodies. >> lying in different places along the bridge. >> and british authorities are

still trying to verify the identity of the suspect calling this attack an act of islamic related terrorism. ing. > this scene overnight, the british prime minister theresa may calling the attack sick and depraved. president trump said he had spoken to may pledging the full cooperation and support of the united states government. >> and meanwhile, some cities here at home like new york are stepping up security at major landmarks. but officials say they have no intelligence suggesting any specific plots on u.s. soil. >> of course, all around the world, people have been watching the activities and the developments there in london. and the newspapers in london, as well have been talking about this attack and there's a similar theme as we've been looking at the headlines, a similar photo of police in the heart of london surrounding the would be gunman. right now, they're trying to figure out, who was that guy and what was his motivation. >> some of them are staying pretty straightforward.

terror in london. or attack in westminster. this isn't the only headline. >> "the daily mirror" also with the attack on democracy. we'll continue to follow developments there in london within live coverage throughout the morning on "america this morning" as well as on "good morning america." big activities here at home. president trump promised to repeal and replace the affordable care act is being put to the test today. the house votes on the republicans' health care bill. >> but the survival of the american health care act may depend on a group of conservative republicans. abc's serena marshall joins us this morning with more on that. good morning. >> reporter: after seven years of railing against obamacare, they control the house, senate the presidency and they still may not get this done. 24 hours before a vote is expected on the repeal and replace of obamacare, republican lawmakers having a late night huddle trying to tweak language to get the votes for the bill. republicans are looking for changes to lower premiums in the current bill.

>> abc's serena marshall. thanks so much. we appreciate it. the senate judiciary committee's questioning of neil gorsuch is now over. the panel eligible hear from witnesses who support and oppose his nomination. democrats yesterday expressed frustration they were not able to pin him down on specific issues like abortion. republicans are confident gorsuch will be confirmed. >> in the meantime, we're all kind of thinking about that stunning revelation from a key congressman who says intelligence may have picked up private communications by president trump and his transition team. congressman devin nunes, chairman of the house intelligence committee says he has information showing that agencies conducting legal surveillance of foreign targets scooped up what he calls incidental collection of those communications. but nunes triggered controversy when he briefed president trump privately on that information before disclosing it to the rest of the judiciary committee.

es >> we're back with a wild and terrifying scene that played out in a small wisconsin town. four people are dead, including a police officer after the shooting spree. it actually started as a domestic dispute at a bank and escalated into shootings at multiple locations, a bank, a law firm, and an apartment complex. officers, including a s.w.a.t. team, had a standoff with the suspect for several hours that ended with a volley of gunfire and a dead police officer. the officer may be the first killed in the line of duty in wisconsin this year. the suspect also injured now in custody. >> the fatal stabbing of a man in new york is being investigated as a hate crime. police say the suspect, james

jackson, deliberately targeted the victim because he was black. they say jackson harbors a deep seated hatred of all black people. abc's linsey davis has more. >> reporter: the man captured on this surveillance tape on a new york city street is under arrest. james jackson, a 28-year-old army veteran is accused of stabbing timothy caughman to death, police say simply because he was black. >> it is believed that he was specifically intending to target male blacks. it's well over ten years that he has been harboring these feelings of hate towards male blacks. >> reporter: according to detectives, jackson came from baltimore with the intent to kill black people. >> the reason why he picked new york is because it's the media capital of the world, and he wanted to make a statement. >> reporter: a can and bottle recycler, caughman was rifling through the trash when police say jackson stabbed him multiple times with this 26-inch black sword. jackson who served in afghanistan is seen running down the street after the stabbing. caughman made it to a nearby

jackson turned himself in. the suspect allegedly wrote a manifesto about attacking blacks in new york city. so far this year, there have been 122 reported hate crimes in this city. that's more than double this time last year. linsey davis, abc news, new york. linsey, thanks. shifting gears now, some of the country's biggest advertisers are pulling out of youtube over promotional videos for terrorists and other offensive material. on wednesday, at&t and johnson & johnson pulled their ads from the google owned video platform. last week request, several european advertisers started a boycott over the same issue. google is reviewing its advertising policies and plans to give companies more control where their ads appear. >> march madness returns. it is night one of the sweet 16 in the ncaa men's basketball tournament. >> there are four games tonight. the first one pits oregon and michigan in kansas city in the midwest region followed by kansas who are going to win, by the way. >> because you have them in your bracket.
