abc seven news, this is a breaking news alert. >> a massive fire is burning in college park, maryland. this is a live look at the smoke coming up right now. there is a huge response to get this blaze under control. it is in the upper floor of the high-rise near the university of maryland. broad, do we know if anyone was inside? brad: there were a lot of people inside but they were construction workers. it is a building that is under construction and is not yet occupied. i will show you what is going on.

they are still struggling to get this thing under control. this isl say now that contained. the garage is underneath. mixed-use and retail underneath. and what would be student housing above. and they are trying to put this thing out. it does look like it is brick construction but it is a facade. on the inside, they have lightweight construction. that means two by fours, the same thing you would see in residential construction. wooden trusses have caught fire. i understand that the fire started in one part of the building and then spread across the wooden trusses. comethe roof started to up, it made layers of wood blazing.

hundreds of thousands of gallons of water are being poured on this fire to bring it under control. the big issue -- no injuries but the big issue here has been the smoke. it is an incredible amount of smoke. i haven't seen a fire this smoky , i don't know when. and it is blowing directly towards the university of maryland campus. but before it gets there, it will go past a senior living building. right next door. that is a senior residents filled with smoke. the people inside were told to get out. iny of them found themselves even smokier conditions so they brought in some maryland campus buses and those folks have been taken away. you can see that there are makee still trying to their way out of the building and get to someplace more comfortable. the smokel you about myself because the camera man and i have been in it. it scorches your throat and it is hard to breathe and to see.

latest as the fire continues to be battled. do you know if there are any injuries in the building? we also have breaking news, this time in the district. several workers are hurt after being trapped when a trench collapsed at a construction site in northeast. that three people needed hospital treatment. sam sweeney has the latest. for it has been a busy day d.c. police at this construction site in the 300 block of 8th street. the first 911 call came in this morning saying that for construction workers were trapped in a collapsed trench. they were able to get three of the workers out with minor problems but one of the workers was trapped inside and was unable to get out. they finally had to lower a basket in

people were taken to the hospital. were treated on the scene. it is unclear what caused the trench to collapse. in the meantime, during the rescue, they shut down 8th street and suspended the d.c. streetcar. but that service has now been restored. as for what is going on, d.c. protecting the scene until the department of regulatory affairs show up to figure out what happened. i am sam sweeney. back to you. turning now to the weather. a cool start to the week. you will want to make sure you grab your rain gear. brian van de graaff is here. brian: we were talking last week about how we could have an improvement that

yesterday, we did have a solid sunday. outside now, the clouds are back. this is the high school in maryland. outside, a cool day. this time of year, temperatures should be almost 70 degrees. the average high is 69. 50 now in leesburg. in fredericksburg. 56 in quantico. cool out there. -- notice the collets all of the clouds that are in place. when you get the north easterly flow, you get the clouds and you get the cooler temperatures. it sets the stage for a drew brees setup. -- it sets the stage for a dreary set up. we will time this out, coming up for the rest of the day, tomorrow and later in the week -- warmer temperatures are on the other side of this rainy setup. >>

challenges loom ahead for president trump's 100 days in office. government funding is going to expire on friday and it could be a showdown to avoid a government shutdown as the administration tries to score more of it these ahead of the 100 day mark. for -- five out days out from his 100th day in office, trump has fallen short on most of the standards he set for himself. >> what happened is my 100 day action plan to make america great again. >> he promised legislation on 10 major campaign promises. so far, he has only moved forward with one of the bills. the plan to repeal and replace obamacare which has not passed. the administration is touting less important bills as other measures of trump's success. >> the assigned more legislation into law than anybody over the

cameras rolling today, her son opened a violation from the dulles toll road which showed a picture from her car. a gray ford taurus. it apparently made two trips on the toll road hours after she went missing. >> i'm starting to get real worried. it is hard to sleep now. the 72-year-old suffers from dementia and has been dealing with depression since last september when her husband of more than phil -- of more than 50 years lost his battle with cancer. musicians.ily of her daughter is currently on tour in europe. >> she has been interacting with the police and trying to call different places. hospitals and stuff. she has been really concerned. john: it was two weeks ago

device before it suddenly exploded. >> the fitbit itself totally melted. the bracelet melted. and i got pieces of plastic burned into my arm. fitbit's website does include a warning for the dues are saying it contains electrical equipment and it could cause injury if not handled properly. the company is investigating and hasn't received any other similar complaints. >> it blew my mind. it was kind of like i wasn't even seeing what i was seeing. this is a terrifying incident in crawford county, arkansas. a four-year-old girl falling from the back of a moving church bus and into a busy highway. the bus driver kept driving. happened to be driving behind the bus. he rushed to the girls aid of his

they were told they couldn't because the school officials had concerns they o political. went onents concerns social media saying america monday will go on. and that is exactly what happened today. >> freedom and liberty that we enjoy in this country is unlike anywhere in the world and it is something we need to celebrate and not discourage. >> according to the school's administration that it didn't reject the idea of "america monday" because it was never proposed to them on paper. but according to parents and students, they say that isn't the case. back to you. lindsey: a bit of a wet day but yesterday, what a pleasant surprise? brian: yesterday was better than we hoped for but usually, we are the first to admit if we are a little off. when it turns out that her then we forecast, we don't feel as bad.

yesterday but it is coming back for today and tomorrow. we need a reprise. it is knocking down the pollen and we are in a moderate drought. let's show you what is happening across the area. green grass in the frederick camera. temperatures in the 50's. for this time of year we should typically be closer to 69 degrees. so mother nature is shortchanging us. you can see the grass is looking pretty green out there. as far as how much rain has fallen, we have seen quite a bit. look at arlington, almost .75 inches of rain. shenandoah county, shy of .5 inches. .1 inches of rain in gainesville. we have seen solid inches of rain. now we are just tracking the rest of the afternoon. fore will be waves of rain the coming days. at least through tomorrow night and into wednesday. here is a closer look on the radar.

north along 17 towards the northern neck. there are heavier pockets of rain that will continue to go through here through the afternoon and tonight and into tomorrow. you may get a low or a break right now. the rain is not quite as heavy. that is what we are noticing. rain and clouds and back to some clouds again. this is the futurecast which looks forward. -- moreht, more brave rain. keep an eye on that for this evening. a mall at 11:00, maybe in the rain but look at the heavy stuff in the carolinas. this will be lifting northward through tomorrow. tomorrow morning, some showers and an embedded thunderstorm or two. this is all part of a system that is off the coast spinning their that should start to pull away from there. willnk the timing for that come tuesday into wees
