smoke. all firefighters come to help. this is across the street from the university of maryland. we know now this evening that the classes have been canceled. the biggest campus in the area does not want the students walking arounded a breathing in that smoke. nancy: nearby buildings were evacuated. brad bell is right outside the fire line. ryan hughes on campus. stephen tschida at a senior center that was forced to evacuate. let's start by going to brad bell with the latest on the firefight. brad: this is still a firefight. it began at 10:00 this morning, and they are still putting huge amount of water on it. take a look back here. you can see the tower truck. each capable of 1,000 gallons of water a minute on the fire. you can still see the brown smoke, the dark smoke. the fire spread and still building on back of the building that they can't get to. now

structural integrity of the building. the rest of the building from the fire and the water. a terrible blaze. just after 10:00 a.m., the smoke begins to spill the sky. flames roaring high above the roof of the under construction building. a nightmare for firefighters. and an entire college campus. for fire crews the building's design is the greatest challenge. brick is only on the facade, interior and the roof system. all lumber. fueling the rapid spread of the flames. >> no sprinkleer system, no alarm system. dangerous to fight a fire in a building under construction. the safeguards are not in place. >> for those on the outside it's the smoke, enough to force the university of maryland campus to close for the day. enough to make the lungs burn. >> i can smell the smoke in my apartment a little bit. i heard reports from friends on campus most of the building. brad: now back live now you can see the firefighters up there on the truck.

putting water on the fire. you can still see that smoke. that smoke traveling from here, the wind carrying it to the college park campus. that is where my colleague ryan hughes is to pick up the story there about the decision to shut down for the day. >> brad, you can still feel and smell the spoke, just hanging here over the campus. students telling me you could smell it inside the classrooms. it's coming through the air conditioning unit. ghost town. a few buses making their way home after the classes were canceled around 1:00 this afternoon. that came through an e-mail this afternoon, the university letting them know that the come pus is closing down due to the poor air quality from the fire. the university of police have been directing traffic. several roads are shut down. baltimoremore avenue closed northbound. students on campus are told to stay inside and closed the wi

especially those that are told not to walk around the campus. students we spoke with say they think the university made the right decision. canceling classes. take a listen. >> you get light headed. it's like you walk around and a big bonfire or campfire. it's reminiscent of that. it's annoying. you get that itch in your throat and stuff. >> the smoke pretty much made it through the classroom buildings. even now walking here, through like the classrooms you can still smell the smoke there. >> all parking lots on campus are unrestricted until 6:00 tomorrow morning. the campus will be on tomorrow. they posted on twitter they plan release more details a about that soon. for now live in college park, ryan hughes, abc7 news. nancy: ryan, thank you.

kimberly: cautionary team from everybody. this essentials from two consumers that called to complain. they never got to ride on their charter buses and they have no luck getting thousands of dollars back. one was a wedding bus to transport the guests. the morning of the event, the bus did not show up. for a martial arts school it was supposed to be a field trip for the children. the bus had no air conditioning, middle of summer. both crust hers promised refunds they never veeved. >> do you feel like the $3,703 was stolen from you? >> i feel like more was stolen for me. kimberly: we would bed for months to track down the man. it's not easy. the bus company goes by different names and it led to different businesses and the home addresses. we did finally track down the bus company owner criminal background. the look of

it was blanketed in black smoke. a lot of students walked by there. they were coughing and covering their faces. thick black smoke consumed the university of maryland campus. the students covered their faces and struggled to breathe. >> it's really foggy. >> some students head to class complained about the air and wondered why the fire continued to rage after the smoke appeared. >> it's overbearing. the campus is foggy. it smells really bad. it's not safe to be out in this condition. >> the house for senior citizens is next to apartment building under construction where the fire broke out. when the smoke started filling it, the senior res debits evac -- senior residence evacuated. >> we had to move; constantly move. it was flooring toward you. constantly. you could hardly bre

jonathan: a group of seniors call themselves the young conservatives organized america monday. the students say the school administrators considered squashing the idea because of concerns that the day might get political. students took their concerns to social media saying "america monday" will go on. >> the liberties we enjoy are unlike everywhere else in

almost hitting the baby but hit her in the head. so another passenger jumps out of his chair and goes face to face with the attendant. >> hey, bud. you do that to me and i will knock you flat. >> c'mon. >> see apparently people are savvy. they won't sit in the chairs when it plays out. they are confronting the folks. this guy yanked the stroller out of her hands while she had a baby in her other arm and the stroller hit her in the head. everybody witnessed it. they started to record. and the guy jumped up to defend the mom. american airlines immediately removed the crew member from duty and upgraded the mother to first class with a full refund. this is days after passenger was dragged and almost beaten in the united airlines flight

probably cost them millions of dollars. nancy: not good. frito lay recalling potato products for possible salmonella products. it includes the jalapeno lays kettle cooked potato chips and miss vicky jalapeno kettle cook chips. they say the seasoning has potentially tainted jalapeno powder. they have a guaranteed fresh date of july 4 or earlier. her ishey plans to cut calories in products by the end of 2022. half to individual wrapped standard and the king size sweets will have 200 or fewer than that. right now with the standard hershey bar is 210 calories. they are going to reformulate the treat and adjust the size of some products. so the question is will we notice the taste?
