a good monday morning. we begin with breaking news. several people rushed into surgery overnight after a man opened fire at a pool party in southern california. >> in fact, in all eight people shot at that apartment complex in san diego's university city area in la jolla. at least one person pronounced dead overnight. a witness says the attacker was sitting calmly with a beer in one hand and a gun this the other. others describe the scenes of chaos people running for their lives trying to help each other. >> new video shows police storming that pool area. you can hear the rapid gunfire come out of that video. police say the gunman actually pointed his gun at officers and was shot and killed. abc's alex stone has the latest. >> reporter: the call came in just after 6:00 sunday evening in san diego. >> he's shooting again. he has a gun in his

he's aiming to the north. he is -- i don't know who he is shooting at at this point. >> reporter: 911 inundated with callers saying there was a man sitting on a lounge chair shooting at random victims. a birthday party under way and one saying he appeared to be targeting black victims. officers arriving on scene quickly made their way to the pool and the gunman was killed. >> shots of fired. suspect down. >> reporter: quickly police and medics began treating the victims. eight were injured. most were african-american. one woman died at a hospital. police say the gunman was 49-year-old peter selas who was white and lived at the apartment complex. >> he pointed the gun at our officers and three fired on the suspect and the suspect is deceased. >> reporter: they don't know if it was a hate crime the gunman armed with a large

handgun and several victims remain in critical condition. alex stone, abc news, los angeles. >> abc's matt gutman is in san diego and will have the latest on "good morning america." but we want to turn to the other top story. that severe weather outbreak across a wide swath of the eastern u.s. >> a powerful system bringing massive floods and tornadoes killed 14 people across 4 states and this morning those storms are on the move. heading north and east triggering warnings from north carolina to new york. >> over the weekend a massive wedge tornado slammed through canton, texas, east of dallas. look at the size of that. it carved out a 35-mile-long path of destruction. that twister ripped homes right off their foundation, wrapped trucks around trees. amazing scene there and demolished the entire lot of new vehicles at one car dealer. but perhaps most amazing two dozen teenagers attending their prom emerging unscathed. th

untouched in a direct hit. ten miles north of canton a rescue played out due to a group of good samaritans that passed by this truck. inside that truck a father, a toddler and an infant were all trapped. but then the man shooting the cell phone video actually got involved, jumped into action performing cpr on the unresponsive infant and a woman tapped that rescuer on the shoulder and started to pray. >> dear jesus, please let this baby breathe. dear jesus, please let this baby breathe. the first prayer she said i felt a response in that child. >> reporter: the baby this morning is in the hospital but the family says her condition is improving. more weather now and to the east a search under way for two children swept away by floodwaters and in western kansas and parts of oklahoma the problem was dvi

may 1st. blizzard conditions across the area dumped at least 4 inches of snow in some spots. now time for a look at today's forecast. >> good morning, kendis, diane, prepare yourself for a round of severe storms marching its way through western portions of new york, central and western pennsylvania down close to the d.c. area with thunderstorms reaching to the ohio valley region and into the deep south. we're expecting by monday evening pittsburgh, buffalo over towards harrisburg and that area reaching into virginia and west virginia damaging winds and flooding throughout the midwest and received over 12 inches of rain in some areas. >> breaking news on capitol hill. congress reached a deal to avert a government shutdown. >> lawmakers are preparing to are a vote after they managed to hammer out a compromise on the massive spending bill. kenneth moton is tracking all of the developments from

>> reporter: good morning. that spending bill expected to get bipartisan votes to pass. this weekend while negotiations were being hammered out and finalized the house gop team, well, it was checking in with mes about health care. overnight a capitol hill deal struck. negotiators reached an agreement on a $1 trillion plus spending bill. for the republicans a $15 billion increase in defense. including border security. for the democrats, increases in from the institutes of health funding and year round pell grants for college students. not in the deal cuts to planned parenthood or sanctuary cities and no funding for president trump's wall on the u.s./mexico border. >> the next 100 days will be just like the first unless his approach changes, a series of broken or unfulfilled promises. >> reporter: the attention turning back to health care this week. house republicans till don't have the votes for his new plan. >> as soon as possible we will br

this is video out of southern california. crews battling multiple brush fires in parts of the inland empire fanned by strong winds. the fire in riverside county is now threatening dozens of hopes and is now covering more than 1200 acres. at one point crews had to ground aircraft because of reports of drones flying in the area. well, not far from that scene two people being questioned after a deadly shooting spree in los angeles. one person killed and three others injured in the rampage. it all started saturday afternoon after a carjacking. one vic was shot and wounded on the street by gunfire from the passing vehicle. two others were injured in their car. the suspects were arrested

suspicion of automobile theft and illegal possession of a handgun. it does not appear to be gang related. hollywood facing another major hacking. the leak after entire season of "orange is the new black" nearly. an anonymous hacker, the dark overlord, carried through on a threat to release the first ten episodes of season five after netflix did not respond to their shakedown. it does look like bullying may be on the decline with researchers in one state reporting a 33% drop overall. >> a study by johns hopkins university looked at a quarter of a million students in maryland over a ten-year period and saw consistent improvement for nearly every indicator. even cyberbullying remained at a low 10%. spacex is hitting the reset on its launch of a satellite in a classified u.s. intelligence mission. a sensor problem forced the scrubbing of yesterday's launch.

tracks. arcing insulators causing smoke-filled tunnels on two separate lines. on the blue line... prince george's county firefighters spent part of the sunday afternoon investigating reports of smoke inside a tunnel, between the capitol heights and addison road metro stations. that closed the capitol heights station for about an hour. and earlier that morning - an arcing insulator caused track problems between the friendship heights and van ness stations for the third time in recent days. trains single-tracked for several hours until the problem was resolved. breaking right now. times square is back open this morning after suspicious packages forced police to shut down several streets overnight. police
