>> do not move or you will be tased. >> reporter: police say 21-year-old kendricks white seen hereafter arrested by police used a bowie style hunting knife. >> three patients that have been stabbed. one in the neck. >> to stab and kill a fellow student and injure three others. >> everyone was yelling. he is here. he is here. and just running away. >> the attack sent a wave of panic across campus. >> all i could think about was hiding doing whatever i could to stay out of sight. until i knew it was okay to come out. just, absolute fear that i never felt on cam pulse before. >> police are interviewing the suspect, trying to figure out a motive. >> his motivation, what was going through his mind. i can't answer at this time. >> reporter: police say there is no ongoing threat to the campus. their investigation could take time. because they still have to interview dozens of witnesses. diane and kendis. >> thank you. new details about the san diego pool party

distrut over a recent breakup. actually called his ex-girlfriend during the shooting so she could listen as he gunned down his victims. seven people were shot, one woman died. most of the victims are minorities. the suspect, was killed, but race was not a motive here. >> dramatic video from witnesses that shows police quickly moving in to take down that gunman. the shot from high above that pool area where all of this shooting took place. the cops swarming the scene. guns drawn. taking aim. shooting. >> the victim just happened to be present at the moment in time when he decided to carry out his spontaneous act of violence. there is zero information to in kate that race played a factor in this terrible, horrific crime. >> now all of the injured are expected to survive. one of those victims says, he is

getting him and others to safety. we want to get context. all of this now, the troubling stories, that we have our abc counterterrorism contributor law enforcement expert, steve gomez, live from los angeles. steve, thank you for joining us this morning. >> thank you. >> we heard the chief in san diego say it is not being kidded a hate crime. what type of investigation is done booefore that can be figur out? >> they are going to be looking at this individual's history as far as patterns of violence, any kind of relationships that thee has had that, where there has been friction, has there been any indication he was susceptible to committing this type of attack. this type of violence. they're going to look at all of his e-mail traffic, social media activity. any kind of pattern. that he was exhibiting. days leading up to the situation. it looks like like, there was a breakup. clearly had an impact on him emotionally and with his behavior. they're going to be looking at

>> steve, at what point do you piece this altogether and try to figure out what the motive was in all of this. we know about the phone call with the ex-girlfriend. what does that tell you? >> what that in kalts he was emotionally distraught. there was something wrong with him. and unlike, most people go through when there is a breakup, they have outlets that they can turn to, people, friends, family, this person clearly wasn't able to cope with this time of situation. we have seen this many times. it, it's typically like a mental health issue, somebody isn't capable of dealing with distraught emotion and feelings they have. what do they do nowadays, they act out. where they go out and kill somebody. gets all this media attention. it is very unfortunate. we are seeing this all over the country in some cases worldwide where this is the way people are reacting when they have problems. >> steve, want to get back to the other story. the campus stabbing there. at the

in austin. many people remember the university of texas where you had the clock tower shooting, some 50-plus years ago. 17 people killed then. but we also had, more recently the ohio state stabbing attack as the well. university of texas, ohio state, both open campuses here. it seems as if, there are people who bite there, who can come in from off the street and do these attacks. but in this case it was a student? >> it is very unfortunate. again it shows this type of strange pattern that we have been seeing where people are just, they're committing this type of violence. now this is a different situation. you now have a, large knife. and that, that is something that is concerning to me. terrorist organizations have told their sympathizers to go out an use a knife to kill people. now, this hasn't been determined whether it is terrorist attack on situation. that is part of the investigation.

campuses are wide open. and so you can have somebody that comes on campus, they could be a student, as the case here. there is not very much that skpan can be done not knowing if a person is mentally deranged or having emotional issues where they will go to strie lense has we saw in the situation here. >> we talk about regulating guns in the country. we are seeing more and more attacks here and abroad, terrorism related or not. in this case, with a knife. some cases with a car. we know the state department just issued a terror alert for europe following recent attacks there. is this a new normal? how do we adjust for attacks with low grade nonweapons so to speak? >> we have to almost start looking for these situations where people are having problems and their behavior is changing. this is a very dif kuflt thing -- difficult thing to look for. law enforcement stretched so thin. so many, use law enforcen't is dealing with. they can only do so much. it really relies on the

have to start noticing when an individual is having some type of problem. if they're depressed. wlets th whether they are going to go to violence. not that we have to be reporting on everybody having a bad day. you have to think about whether an individual is kind of susceptible to violence. then you mav to start talking about it. not only with them. but maybe with the authorities or, people at a campus, you know, the school administrators. >> there has been a lot of talk about mental healther use, how we deal with that. maybe all circumstances will bolster that. steve gomez, thank you for being with us. >> we are going to move on. to stay on the west coast. in fact, portland, oregon, where there were protest that erupted in violence. marchers ral marchers threw molotov cocktails at officers in riot gear. more than two dozen arrested after police canceled the protest permit. and blame that violence on
