>> napoleon dynamite? >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." >> good morning to you. want to get to the political bombshell. president trump firing fbi director james comey. >> many people calling it stunning, unprecedented, comey apparently caught completely off-guard. this is the scene at lax for the fbi, former fbi director. there for an event. but flew back to washington after learning about his firing from news reports. >> comey faced intense criticism over his handling of the hillary clinton e-mail probe. his termination comes as he led the investigation into possible ties between russia and trump campaign. we begin with lana zach and details. good morning. >> good morning, there are lots of details on this. many people are really questioning the optics of the timing particularly given that james comey was overseeing the russian inv

suspect that the decision to fire director comey was part of a cover-up. >> reporter: the controversial comey had drawn ier from democrats and republicans at various times. just days before the presidential election, comey was responsible for a bombshell announcement he would be reopening the investigation into clinton's e-mails. he later testified on ramifications of that decision. >> it makes me mildly nauseous to think we might have had impact on the election. >> not just democrats, kendis, diane, raising concerns about this possible russia connection. we are also hearing from many republicans who feel the same way, that the timing is all very fishy in their mind. we heard from the chair of the senate intelligence committee who said, that it further confuses an already difficult investigation that also becoming further confused in some ways by president trump and the white house announcing he will meet with russia's foreign minister today. kendis, diane.

raised about attorney general jeff sessions' rolen this. recused himself from the russian investigation now involved in the firing of man leading it. what more do we know about that? >> exactly right, diane. there are question as but that. whether or not that seems above board, insidious, at, at perhaps its worst. and we also know that deputy attorney general, rod rosenstein, the man who may decide if any one gets prosecuted in connection with russia one of the ones who pushed for the firing of the fbi director leading the investigation. a lot of lawmakers who are now saying, that these questions must be answered. and we expect congress to start get together to answer the questions starting to day. >> all right. monitoring it all closely. lana zach live from washington. lana, thanks. >> back to chuck schumer, lana had in the story there. he told the president he was, quoting, making a big mistake. the president wasted little time in firing back

>> president trump called him crying chuck schumer and said the senator recently stated he had no confidence in comey, then he acts so indignant. and added #draintheswamp. >> eric holder reacted. to the career men and women at the department of justice and fbi you know what the job entails and how to do it. be strong and unafraid. duty, honor, country. >> of course the big question now what's next for the fbi? who will replace comey. >> his deputy running the bureau. 49-year-old andrew mccabe, acting director of the fbi apin theed to deputy position back in january of last year. by comey himself. jeff sessions will name an interim director. the search is already on for a permanent replacement. there are discussions inside the bureau if comey will address the staff one final time. that is not clear if that will happen.

contributor, former fbi counterterrorism official steve gomez. good morning. thank you for joining us. what are you hearing from within the fbi? >> well, i am hearing range of emotions. word like, some one died, when this occurred, shock, they don't feel like it was right, the way he found out. apparently he was in the los angeles field office. found out from the media. a lot of people that were around. so they, they were hurt by this. because, they could see probably, i wasn't there, but it sound look they saw the anguish and the confusion. and there was a lot of confusion in the office. so a number of, yeah, hearing about young employees, who aren't familiar with the way change occurs in fbi how they were wondering what happened next, do we come to work? things i'm hearing from various people. >> change in the fbi does happen, doesn't happen look this routinely. been years since it has. so, talk about the investigation. how does this impact that investigation? >> so,

investigations, all fbi investigations being conducted, nationwide, and through out, internationally, there is not an impact. there is succession planning in place. deputy director. associate deputy director. assistant directors. every field office throughout the country has special agent in charge and assistants. everything in place. the country has to understand nothing will happen to any investigation. i think the big question of course is how does this impact the russia investigation, and that is something that is going to continue on, but the, the fact is, now, that, that leadership at the very top which was overseeing this investigation, that is going to change. so i think the matter of, just ensuring that that investigation continues. that's how the succession planning is going to occur with the bureau. >> steve, one of the big words on both side is trust. in all of this. one big thing, people are looking for is trust in the fbi and fbi director. what kind of qualities do you think president trump

>> well, trust usually starts when it comes to the fbi with independent objectivity, you can't be partisan. that is one of first things that we always looked at with our director, any time a new director came in you. wanted to make sure they had the qualities. because the fbi has to be independent when they conduct their investigation. whatever kind of investigation it is. we all, as fbi agents and employees, had to function independently and objectively. that's very important. you also have to be able to manage, nowadays a worldwide organization, with a sense of urgency. because the fbi deals with urgent matters. who ever it is that is selected as director they have to handle any kind of situation that comes their way. they have to prioritize it, move quickly. and then last, is, who ever the individual is that is selected they have to be familiar with the screw dishl cyjudicial syst

this is now the pool that they're going to be swimming in. they have to understand the way things work from the law enforcement standpoint that's the leadership. they're going to be showing with this type of organization. >> steve, i know you are very much in touch with many former colleagues there at edgar hoover building and field offices across the country. and were in touch with them yesterday. how gut wrenching was this news? >> this hurts. absolutely hurts. this hurts. it hurts me. it hurts everybody. not only because, jim comey is a good man. and for him to depart abruptly like this. being in a field office, l.a. office where i worked for many, many years, and i could see him walking through the office which most directors would do. >> hard to miss at 6'7." >> yeah, absolutely. and everybody, everybody knows when the director is showing up. doing a visit. everybody is there. i can't even iffage in, this coming across the news screen, saying that he has been fired right there. like i id
