developing ahead of a cold front headed our way. i'll give you the headlines here. we have clusters of thunderstorms from harrisonburg today to locust dale. the sever warning there. another north and west of fredericksburg. most of the action, the most intense action will stay just to the south of the immediate metro area. not to say metro washington couldn't get a storm but for the short term the biggest threat is the south. two warnings until 4:45, this thunderstorm complex we will deal with. until 4:15 the one farther east north and west of fredericksburg. the general motion is west to east. that means the following towns are going to be involved. chancellor, fredericksburg, virginia 4:19. white water 4:36. then jumps the river. the other ones are farther south and west, their story is similar progression to the east. additionally right along the cold front a severe thunderstorm watch posted for portions of ohio and west virginia as well. we have a good six hours we

and thunderstorms in the very hot and humid air mass with temperatures in the upper 80's to the 90's. it look like we will end with the future cast. through the evening, the heaviest clusters are likely to be south of the metro. anybody is subject to individual storm. i have a feeling there will be more severe thunderstorms issued. we will stay on top of it all afternoon long in the stormwatch7 weather center. [sirens] jonathan: what you are looking at is not a police escort of an ambulance. this is a chase. nancy: the ambulance was leading officers across maryland. alison: wow! this was something else. it was stolen right from the prince george's county hospital center. abc7 was there when the bus went flying by. jonathan: now we are learning how it was stolen. nancy: and how they stopped the man inside. alison: maryland bureau chief brad bell takes us along on the wild ride.

brad: this looks like a crime of opportunity. i started here at the ambulance bay. the policy is the ambulances are supposed to be parked and turned off and locked. but it doesn't always happen as a practical matter. this morning a patient being discharged found one of them running, unlooked and jumped in. the pursuit went this way. then that way. 43-year-old william person drove his stolen $275,000 ride all the way down indian to charles county and then with the ambulance tires flattened by the police stop sticks he u-turned and came back into prince george's. they got a look at him leading caravan of ambulances and the police. >> we created a pocket around the ambulance to present it from striking citizen

that can't go out on the patio because it's raining and lightning all over the place. but not in the metro area. we have to go south to the viewing area. let's start with a time lapse. spotsylvania it is 87 degrees. it has been sunny all day. watch the sky as it changes over the afternoon. you will see the dark clouds ahead of intense, the storm ranked severe for a little bit. it will move in. this vantage point you see the edge. darker on this side. the storm, the national weather service canceled the severe thunderstorm warning a little early. because it was losing severe weather sign. it's still a healthy complex. moving across fredericksburg to potomac and charles county. this area is still under the severe thunderstorm warning until 4:45. there are other elements popping up. this is ahead of a cold front. a cold front with a hot and a humid air mass. the ingredients are there for the next few hours to have more pop.

watching. it has enormous lightning with it and is developing high in the atmosphere. look at where the precipitation goes up close to 50,000 feet. there are areas of hail in here. this is a major league thunderstorm. severe thunderstorm. a lot of lightning. dangerous lightning. it continues to move east. no sign of the rotation with it. we don't expect that. in any storm we watch for signs that the storms may turn ugly. right now gusty winds, hail and very heavy rain. numerous lightning strikes are the main concern as it heads to the east. this one diminishing a bit. but still packing a punch. over fredericksburg here in two or three minutes from now. eventually come across stafford and across the potomac river to charles county coming up before the top of the hour at 5:00. the forecast this evening, continue to be scattered showers and thunderstorms. the temperatures will drop in the 70's. by 9:00 we might have an is

that's new at 5:00. doug: back on stormwatch7 here in the weather center. the camera to the right here is showing the area in fredericksburg. i-95. you might make out traffic only the right-hand side. torrential downpours. lightning heading south. the timing is not good. that is where most of the action will continue short-term. south and southwest of metro washington. so travel plans keep that in mind.

non-severe but heavy. the back part firing up with showers and storms. no warning in effect for that. dealing with the thunderstorms north and east of ruckersville. there are more developing south of manassas. there are no watches or warnings for the area at all. we have had 141 lightning strikes here just in recent 20 minutes or so. it's a lot of the electrical activity out there. but they have not stormed any two lines. they are flanked east and west. this will cause heavy rain. if they continue the areas that they pass over could cause localized flooding. no flood warning is up. but that is something to keep an eye on. more somes to go through the evening hours. we will watch the storms south of roanoke. they are staying south of richmond. more storms at 8:00 or 9:00. more with the cold front to the north. active afternoon. by morning the winds turn north/northeast and it will be cool upper 60's. and a cloudy and a cool

weekend. look at the change. shower in the morning. otherwise cloudy. continuing cloudy near 70 for the day on sunday. steve rudin will be here to update you on the storms and the next ten days as well. jonathan: thanks. two firefighters hurt fighting a house fire in university park. michelle: students from the university of maryland were forced to run from the flames. nancy: ryan hughes has the video and what it sounded like when the firefighters issued mayday call. ryan: the firefighters and the students are lucky to be alive. the home is condemned and left gutted after the morning's fire. take a look at the damage. the windows are blown out and part of the roof is gone. we are told three university of maryland students were inside at the time and managed to escape. we are told there was a party here that end around midnight. three hours later a fire started in the basement area and spread.

for one last meal from a lunchtime pioneer. announcer: "abc7 news at alison: we start right now on storm watch. warnings start to pop up in the area today. this is 95 just south of fredericksburg. you can tell it is coming down there and of course slowing down the commute this afternoon. let's get straight on over to the stormwatch7's chief meteorologist doug hill tracking things from the weather center. what are you seeing? doug: heavy storms. a lot of lightning. the next few hours will get active across the viewing area but this is the one with the warning until 5:30. fredericksburg in the middle of it here. lightning and the torrential rain that is spreading eastward toward the potomac river. we keep an eye on that. one storm popped up over d.c.

there is no lightning detected. it's heavy rain and move east in the next 15 to 20 minutes. the future cast shows more of the same coming our way later tonight. the future cast for 6:00 has a lot of thunderstorms to the south. as we get through early everything we are seeing the signs that more storms will develop north and west of the area. this 9:00 tonight on the map. still active. it will settle down but not until after midnight when the cold front comes through the area. there is no widespread watch. with the air mass and the approach of the cold front there will be heavy thunderstorms forming. then one or two will turn severe with damaging wind, hail and lightning. by early tomorrow the temperatures are in 60's. the weekend will be cooler than in the past few days. we will keep you on storm watch. any more warnings come your way we will come back to you immediately. otherwise i will see you in 15 minutes. alison: doug, great. thank you very much. now we move to breaking news out of northeast washington where the police are on the scene of a shooting in the parking lot of the brooklyn
