[captioning performed by the national captioning institute, which is responsible for its caption content and accuracy. visit ncicap.org] >> we begin this noon on stormwatch. today marks six straight days of rain in our area. it started out wet and soggy. chief meteorologist doug hill is here with a look at your forecast. with that break may come a little bit of sunshine, but later this afternoon, heavy rain. potential of being the most active weather day, and i mean heavy showers, thunderstorms, and the outside chance some could approach severe levels.

starting to form west of interstate 81. temperatures are expected to warm finally out of the 60's to at least 70, but we will deal with more showers and storms through the mid to late afternoon and through early this evening. by the time we get to the 4:00 hour through 7:00, that is when we will see a noticeable increase in the probability of showers and storms. we expect to have those storms produce even more heavy downpours. this isn't just a regular thursday evening. this is the thursday before memorial day, so there will be extra folks on the road, and that rain will have an impact. fredericksburg, a line of heavy downpours that will expand. more heavier downpours will follow just ahead of the cold front later this evening. we will see more heavy showers and thunderstorms. they will come in waves and cycles, but they will eventually get out overnight.

camera taking on carjackers who jumped inside her vehicle as she pumped gas. sam sweeney has this and credible video as she fights back. sam: it's the video making headlines around the world. melissa smith is on the south side of milwaukee pumping gas. normal until a few seconds after she begins, a stolen cadillac with four teens comes around. jumps outse teens and jumps into melissa's car. she realizes what is happening and says, not so fast. >> i didn't see him until i saw .omeone was in my car i had that this-isn't . -happening-to-me-today moment. he laughed at me, which really irritated me. sam:

slow down the car twice, but melissa doesn't fall off. finally, he has second thoughts and jumps out of the car while it is still in drive. she's holding on trying to stop it. and slamsin the car the brakes as it heads into the middle of traffic. he was laughing while i was on my car, and he was trying to throw me off. zero remorse. sam: melissa wasn't laughing either. she said her instinct kicked in. we should mention there were no children in the car. melissa was not hurt, and the teens got away with the stolen car, melissa xfone, and her purse. sam sweeney, abc 7 news. lindsey: this is another wild scene. this is out of texas. that is where a police chase ended with an rv engulfed in flames. police were chasing the driver who was accused of shooting his wife. police used spike strips to flatten the rv tire,

was before the vehicle burst flames. the children inside were safely rescued, but the driver was later found dead inside. belowson camera, exchanged --blows exchanged -- blows exchanged after a party goes too far. you can see the officer hits the girl twice in the face before he and the other officer can grab her. the woman in the white is the teen's mother who says she feels like she left her teen down. >> i couldn't protect her. that is my job as her mother. no mother, no father, nobody should have to see their child get hit in the face by a man. lindsey: she says her daughter never hit the officer, but the video doesn't show what led up to the fight. the police department is also investigating. an update this afternoon on the little girl pulled into the water by that sea lion in canada. the video went viral this week

and now we know the girl is being treated for anection that she got from that sea lions mouth. the infection is called seal finger. it can be tricky to treat since it is resistant to many antibiotics. if left untreated, marine experts say the bacteria could become severely debilitating. now to that wave of tornadoes sweeping across four states, multiple tornadoes touched down along the east coast, from ohio all the way up to north carolina. caused damage, blowing roofs right off, and in north carolina, an elementary school was demolished. in ohio, a tornado caused massive damage, ripping apart a gas station. thankfully, no one has gotten hurt. people are worried about whether it's going to rain on their barbecue. we have to be thankful we are not getting that type of severe weather.

couple thunderstorms. even this afternoon, we have a couple thunderstorms. we have a lot of worry about severe weather, tornadic weather. however, is a, change for the warmer and a little bit of sunshine, but for the first couple moments of this broadcast, i want to talk about something that is happening at the end of next week. june 1 is the beginning of the 2017 hurricane season, and the hurricane center issued their forecast for the upcoming atlantic hurricane season. here are the names. we already had arlene. that was earlier in april. i won't read them all, but there's a lot. there's never a doug. never. i've been doing this forever, and there has never been a doug. here's the outlook. the average over the past 30 years is 12 named storms, either tropical storms or hurricanes. this season, they are forecasting 11-17.

hurricanes on average form. their forecast will be 5-9. major hurricanes, 3 is the average, and we are in that range of 2-4. it could be a more active than average hurricane season. some folks have already gone to the beaches. only 63 with a little bit of sunshine breaking through the clouds. it will be cooler, in the 70's this weekend, and there will be afternoon showers and storms. in the metro area, we are still pinned in the 60's, but when the sun comes out, we will warm to 70 degrees. we are seeing heavy storms east of roanoke, so we are going to watch areas out through the valleys right along south of starting to fire up storms, and there's the potential for some of them being heavy. we can't rule out an isolated storm approaching severe levels. this is 5:30, plenty of heavy rain and thunderstorms through the area,

right when people will be heading to ocean city, and the rest are traveling -- thursday is getting to be a big travel day before three-day weekends. overnight, we will finally start to clear out. we will have a sunny day tomorrow with only the slight chance of a shower or storm, and saturday, we will be near 80 degrees, some sun, that afternoon storms possible. the morrill day, a 30% to 40% 30% to-- memorial day, a 40 percent chance of afternoon storms. saturday will be dry, temperatures cooler in the low 70's. check it out. things will settle down after we weekend.gh the holiday the outlook for the middle and end of next week is several days in the mid to upper 70's with plenty of sunshine and a dry stretch. itdsey: i looked it up, and looks like there have been some hurricane douglases,
