today is for. nancy: memorial day. thank you for spending part of your holiday evening with us. abc7 has team coverage honoring those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. michelle: we begin this evening with richard reeve at the vietnam veterans memorial on the national mall. rich? richard: what an emotional afternoon here at the place they call "the wall." look behind me now. you can see the crowds of people, cavalcade going back and forth at the memorial. some of them taking pictures. others looking for a certain name or perhaps a pubbing off there. a time to honor this generation, this war, vietnam. for those who come here to reflect, to honor, to remember, it is known simply as "the wall." 58,318 names. in sharp relief etched in the dark stone. the wall is 35 years old now. the veterans who fought in vietnam who survived to come here are here to hono

who did not. their hair is gray. the faces lined with age. and perhaps from memories of the war. they did not share for a long time. many who visit here every memorial day receive the welcome they didn't have when they came home from vietnam. 70-year-old ron peters was a radio man with the army 27th infantry regimen, known as the wolf hounds in 1967-1968. coming here each year is a healing thing. >> i gave you a different sense. and a brotherhood. it is a brotherhood. every wolf mound is always glad to see another one, a brother. they say that once a wolf hound, always a wolf hound. richard: ron peters became a successful i.t. engineer in reston, virginia. he comes here every year. at 5:00, an emotional story. two veterans in the same unit

friendship here at the wall. reporting live, richard reeve, abc7 news. michelle: so many powerful stories. visible today at arlington national cemetery. increased security. not just for the president. the visitors now have to show photo i.d. if you are driving to the ground to visit a grave marker you must have a pass. nancy: president trump was there to pay tribute to service members who fought the country's recent wars in iraq and afghanistan. this is section 60 at arlington national cemetery. the president asking americans to make a solemn pledge today. >> let us pledge to make the most of that freedom. that they so gallantly and brilliantly fought for. and they died to protect. nancy: it holds special meaning in the trump administration. this is where department of homeland security secretary'sson rober

michelle: a phrase you might have heard. "happy memorial day." some take exception of that given the weight and the meaning of the holiday. that is the instapoll question today. is it appropriate to wish someone a happy memorial day? here are the options. yes, it's fine. no, it's disrespectful. stephen tschida has a pulse of the people today. stephen: music, pomp and a parade. how do we express ourselves on this day? >> i heard people have a happy memorial day weekend. stephen: today as americans relax and enjoy a day off from work. some believe this day has become more about a start of summer than remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the country. >> they need to be more cognizant of what the day is about. differentiate it between veterans day and memorial day. >> on the national mall where they held the parade, some came here because it is memorial day. others say while this is a

should not be overshadowed. >> for me i don't want to overcelebrate it. it's more of a somber occasion. >> since so many of the holidays are all about having a good time, some of the mall said it's okay for memorial day to be somber. stephen tschida, abc7 news. michelle: there was lots of excitement in rockville as well. opening concert and wreath ceremony honored the fallen heroes just before the big parade. it's one of the longest running parades in the area. children of all ages line the streets to see the performance floats and the boats to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. >> the platoons are under the order of the jointed force headquarters national capital region military district of washington. nancy: the national memorial day parade. a great turn-out to honor those who

post bond. you have to wonder what woods was doing out so late. he told us he was recovering from back surgery and he didn't attend the recent big tiger jam event and said the most focus is rehabbing the back injury. no response from his p.r. team. i asked the incident report from the arrest and that should be released tomorrow. scott taylor, abc7 news. michelle: thank you. president trump returned from his first overseas trip under the cover of night. nancy: stunning developments in the investigation of russia's meddling in the 2016 election. investigators wanting to hear from one of the president's top aides and family members. michelle: megan hughes takes us inside the investigation. reporter: the investigation into russia intensifying. the spotlight on trump's son-in-law jared kushner. >> kushner is an interesting situation. unlike someone staff that you can fired he is married to

ivanka trump. reporter: kushner is not a target of the investigation but they are responding that he tried to set up a secret communication channel with russia, after it's concluded russia tried to meddle in the investigation. >> it's normal and acceptable. any way you can communicate with people, particularly organizations that are maybe not particularly friendly to us is a good thing. reporter: republican senator john mccain isn't buying it. today in an interview on australian tv. >> i know some administration officials are saying well, that is standard procedure. i don't think it's standard procedure prior to the inauguration of a president of the united states by someone who is not in an appointed position. reporter: the ranking member of the house intelligence committee says kushner's security clearance should be questioned. >> there ought to be a review of his security clearance to find out if he was truthful and candid. >> president trump defended

kushner in a statement saying he has total confidence in him and he is doing a great job for the country. megan hughes, abc news, washington. michelle: president trump responding on twitter after another missile launch by north korea. north korea has shown great disrespect for the neighbor china but shooting off yet another ballistic missile. the missile launch landed in water off japan. it's the third missile test in as many weeks and it follows testing of the missiles supervised by the leader kim jong un. nancy: the chestertown bombing was -- the manchester bombing was a week ago today. the police are searching for anyone who had seen salman abedi with a blue suitcase which has vanished. this is as another man was arrested bringing the people in custody to 14. the 23-year-old was arrested on suspicion of terrorist activity over the weekend. 22 people were killed in attack outside a concert.

indianapolis 500. you can see the driver clip the wall, swerve back to the left and then clip that other car. pieces of the car literally go flying as it flips through the air. both drivers were able to walk away without a scratch. nancy: not so much for the car, though. michelle: no. nancy: meantime today marks 100 years since the birth of the 35th president john f. kennedy. he was born on the day may 29 in brooklyn, massachusetts in 1917. michelle: there are a number of events to mark the occasion in d.c. remembering the president. jeff goldberg is live for us at the kennedy center with the events taking place there. jeff? jeff: the kennedy center is a living memorial to john f. kennedy jr. a few moments ago a big celebration got going here celebrating what would have been the 100th birthday of the former president. this is the culmination of a year-long celebrations at the kennedy center. today actors and musicians and the jrn

this is more like a summer holiday. looking at the cloud cover that are starting to build in especially as you go to the west. we will start to move in with that. a few isolated showers and they will stretch to calvert county. farther southwest we have a heavy rain. culpeper is a sprinkle or two. farther south and closer to orange we are looking at the heaviest downpours. most of the metro will stay dry for now and the majority of the everything. the temperatures at 78:00 are close to 80. a mild evening. most places looking for the humidity to come down. tomorrow, cloudy and gray again with the slight showers.

michelle: now to a remarkable story of compassion on memorial day as we honor those who lost their lives serving their country. families on both sides of a deadly conflict managed to do what many of us cannot. set aside their differences. maggie rulli on how they turned the other cheek and found common ground. reporter: this memorial day, two sides of the vietnam war are coming together. >> close the past and look toward a brighter future. reporter: finding common ground through a common grief. >> as people, we have the same

reporter: the non-profit the two sides project connects families who lost loved ones on both sides of the conflict. >> that is our hill. one person at a time. >> after six americans traveled to vietnam in 2015, this time it was their turn. welcoming them for the first time. they showed them where the parents names are etched. margo carlson delone started the project. >> i hated them. reporter: her father was a fighter pilot in the war and died when she was 2 years old. >> after a while i realize i didn't want to live with hatred anymore. i became aware as i grew over my dad's bombs probably killed a lot of people and there was probably a daughter like me on the other side who lost her dad. reporter: at the memorial she said the hatred feels far away. today she cries tears of joy for bringing the sides together. >> this feels like we are all coming full circle.
