we'll start with breaking news in afghanistan. a deadly explosion going off in what is considered a highly secure part of kabul. it is lined, of course, with foreign embassies. >> afghan officials say a suicide car bomb killed more than 60 people and injured rough think 300. that blast went off in the height of the morning rush in what's considered the city's safest area. >> you can see some of the early images we're getting quite a powerful blast that blew out the windows and destroyed more than 50 vehicles. that death toll expected to rise. the nationalities of the victims are not yet known, of course, we'll continue to stay on top of this breaking news. that explosion in the heart of kabul this morning. and also breaking overnight a midair scare for jetblue passengers flying from new york to san francisco. the plane forced to divert to grand rapids, michigan, after a passenger's laptop battery caught fire. >> i was stunned. i knew something was going to happen because, you know, lithium batteries catching on fire when you're up at 38,000

that, you know, we've got to do something. >> a frightening scene there. after a three-hour delay the plane resumed its flight to san francisco where it touched down just moments ago. also breaking overnight a police standoff is over after shutting down parts of the orlando airport for nearly three hours. a 26-year-old ex-marine waved a gun at police officers in the car rental area and police say he pointed the weapon at his own head and then asked officers to shoot him. luckily neither the police nor the man fired any shots. in fact, it turns out the gun he was holding was fake. he was trying to commit suicide by cop. he will now undergo a mental evaluation. developing kathy griffin apologizing amid the growing outrage over that anti-trump photo that she posted to social media. >> the comedian admits she crossed a line and made a mistake but her troubles could be far from over. now that the secret service is investigating. >> hey, everybody, it's me, kathy griffin. >> reporter: overnight she issued an apology for this

comedian staring coldly at the camera while holding a fake decapitated head of president trump and posted it to social media and the backlash was swift, donald trump jr. tweeted disgusting but not surprising. imagine a conservative did this to obama at potus. chelsea clinton said this is vial a vile and wrong. it sparked outrage across the political spectrum. the outrage even reached the secret service. overnight it confirmed it's investigating say each alleged or perceived threat has to be investigated thoroughly which taxes secret service manpower and resources that could be utilized elsewhere. griffin has been a strong opponent of the president but appears that wasn't always the case. here she is embracing him three years ago when she was a contestant on "celebrity apprentice." hours after griffin put out a video apologizing. >> i sincerely apologize. i'm a comic.

this morning, trump advisers under the congressional microscope. >> it's going really well. >> reporter: ex-national security adviser michael flynn will give up some documents in the senate's expanding investigation into russia's election meddling. a source tells abc news a narrow subpoena made it easier for flynn to cooperate without waiving his fifth amendment rights. the congressional probe also now focused on president trump's confidant and personal attorney michael cohen. cohen told abc news he declined an invite to testify saying the request was poorly phrased, overly broad and not capable of being answered. >> i would say to mr. cohen that we will issue a subpoena and he will be compelled to come and speak. >> reporter: the senate also wants to question former white house and campaign aide boris epshteyn. >> we love trump. >> reporter: but the president's son-in-law and adviser jared kushner is under increased scrutiny. investigators want to know why he met secretly in december with officials of the new york branch

a cold front is moving through the northeast today bringing a threat of showers and even thunderstorms to western new york and pennsylvania this morning. later today, the front will slide east and bring showers and storms to the northeast around dinnertime. some storms could include lightning and heavy rain. severe storms also pounded san antonio yesterday with nearly 2 1/2 inches of rain falling in 2 1/2 hours. there were at least five high water rescues but three adult brothers were swept away and still have not been found. ariana grande is getting some high caliber help with her benefit concert for the victims of the manchester terror attack. >> justin bieber, coldplay and katy perry are some of the names on a long list of people who will join her on stage. they also include take that, miley cyrus and pharrell williams. >> the concert will take place sunday night in manchester and will raise money

been conducting tests and increased the pressure too much. >> quite a scene there and also seen over the pacific, the u.s. military successfully shooting down a mock long-rank ballistic missile for the first time. all of this as north korea poses a growing threat. the critical test of the pentagon's missile defense system involved firing a rocket from vandenberg air force base in california to stop a warhead launched 4,000 miles away. they collided over the pacific ocean as planned. but there's till no guarantee it would work in a real war scenario. a heavily promoed flight from philadelphia to iceland was diverted to boston overnight. the flight was iceland air's first ever from philly to reykjavik and the mayors of both cities were on board but the miles noticed an unusual smell and when they couldn't determine what it was, they change course and landed in boston. there were no other problems or injuries reported. now the first court appearance for the suspect accused of killing two men on a train in portland, oregon.

>> death to the enemies of america. leave this country if you hate our freedom. >> 35-year-old jeremy christian is facing two counts of felony aggravated murder and other charges. he did not enter a plea. kriths was confronted by three men after allegedly hurling anti-muslim insults at two women. he attacked the men killing two and wounding a third. the cleveland police department is taking disciplinary action against the two officers involved in the shooting of tamir rice. one is fired. the other suspended. more than two years after the 12-year-old was shot and killed as he played with a toy gun in a park. now, rice's family settled with the city for $6 million but none of the officers involved face criminal charges. rice's family now says these disciplinary charges don't go far enough. the stock for online retailer amazon opens at nearly a thousand dollars a share and that's good news for founder jeff bezos. if it keeps rising it puts him on track to become the world's richest man.

and new york city. we're learning more this morning about the arrest of tiger woods as dash cam video of the arrest is set to be released. >> police reports show officers found woods asleep at the wheel. the reports also say woods' mercedes was running with the brake lights on and a blinker on. it was stopped in the roadway with two flat tires and damaged bumpers. woods says he takes multiple prescription drugs following back surgery last month and said he didn't realize the mix of medications had affected him so strongly. a bit of relief for a new jersey family after they were targeted by brazen car thief. surveillance thief shows a woman pulling into a gas station and leaving it running. as she went inside. look carefully. that's when ray man sped off not realizing her baby was in the backseat. you can see the mom yelling for him to stop. the suspect abandoned the vehicle a few blocks away leaving the 1-year-old unharmed. he was reunited with his family and the suspect was actually arrested as well. a new study

first on seven. the seven on your side i-team brought you this story earlier this month, when it appears security guards dumped someone out of a wheelchair outside howard university hospital. now - they are facing consequenses. howard university tells us three people have been fired in connection with this incident. it released a statement saying in part - the university is continuing training efforts to ensure it never happens again.

in maryland-- a judge sentences a woman to 40-years in prison for luring a man to his death. prosecutors say 20-year-old vanesa alvarado knew members of the ms-13 gang were waiting for cristian villagran-morales when she invited him to a wooded, gaithersburg park. they stabbed the 18-year-old more than 150-times. the reason -- the teen jokingly flashed a sign from a gang he didn't belong to. four other people have been charged in the murder. one pleaded guilty while charges against another were dropped. in the day ahead. former naacp president ben jealous will officially enter the race for a different job-- governor of maryland. jealous is expected to announce his candidacy in baltimore later this morning. he will be one of several candidates looking to secure the democratic nomination-- when residents vote in the primaries next june. that person will then try to unseat
