than six hours tonight in protest. this is after the house gop bill passed, but senate republicans promised to take up their open legislation. that promise to push it forward, however, creating deep divides. it's a senate standoff, democrats taking over the floor, halting business as usual. >> what are you afraid of? bring that bill out. >> people are literally in tears on the phone. they are scared. and they are angry. >> the president of the united states called it mean. >> reporter: in a talk-a-thon effort. to bring the republican health care bill out from behind closed doors. a group of 13 republican senators have been working on their repeal and replace of the affordable care act for weeks and hoped to get it to a vote before the end of the month. democrats, furious with the secrecy. >> is the chair aware of the number of consecutive days in session and the number of hours that the senate considered hr-3590, the patient protection

and affordable care act? >> the secretary of the senate's office notes that hr-3590 was considered on each of 25 consecutive days of session and the senate library estimates approximately 169 hours in total consideration. >> 25 days of consecutive session on a bill that was partisan in the sense that republicans were angry with it. but we still had the courage to have a debate on the floor. >> reporter: hoping to force open discussion and a hearing. >> since this is a complicated bill to review the bill, will it be available to us and the public more than ten hours before we have to vote for it? >> i think we'll have ample opportunity to read and amend the bill. >> will it be more than ten hours? >> i think we'll have ample opportunity to read and review the bill. >> i rest my case. >> reporter: and it's not just democrats. marco rubio on sunday warning on rushing to aot

doctors saying he had extensive brain damage. his family saying he looked very uncomfortable. almost anguished. within a day, the count nance of his face changed. he was at peace, he was home, and we believe he could sense that. just days before he was released, the north koreans say warmbier contracted botulism and fell into a coma after taking a sleeping pill. his family never believed that explanation. >> there is no excuse for any civilized nation to have kept his condition secret and denied him top-notch medical care for so long. >> reporter: at the white house monday, president trump condemning the north korean regime. >> it's a brutal regime. and we'll be able to handle it. >> reporter: the family blames north korea for otto's death, saying the awful torturous mistreatment of our son at the hands of the north koreans ensured no other outcome was possible.

police in fairfax, virginia do not believe the murder of a teenage muslim girl was a hate crime but instead a case of extreme road rage. investigators say the 17-year-old was among some 15 teenagers walking and riding bicycles to a mosque when a 22-year-old got into an argument with one of the boys. torres chased them with a baseball bat and ended up beating her to death. take a look. las vegas could reach 116 degrees today. phoenix, 119. just a few degrees shy of a record. but record highs may be set in palm springs and death valley. with temperatures in the triple digits, parents are reminded that playground equipment can burn children's skin. and drivers are being warned about scorching hot car interi

a brush fire near big bear, california has grown to 850 acres. and triggering a voluntary evacuation order. the holcomb fire is threatening campgrounds, a lake and a local dump, but no homes are at risk. this fire is spreading rapidly, fueled by record-breaking heat and dry conditions. and police are still searching for an attempted kidnapper. caught on camera. this happened saturday night in irvine, california. watch as a man grabs a baby boutique employee by her hair and tries to drag her into the back room of the store. he finally stopped after the woman told him there were surveillance cameras. luckily, the woman was not

man. there are more unanswered questions following the deadly collision between a u.s. destroyer and the massive container ship off of japan. the japanese company that owns the philippines-flagged ship is not saying why it took nearly an hour to report the crash or why the cargo ship kept going for ten miles after slamming into the uss fitzgerald. seven american soldiers were killed. investigators are trying to figure out if negligence is to blame. and a man who spent 23 years in prison for a crime he did not commit has filed a civil rights lawsuit against the former chicago police officer who he says framed him. 49 year old jose montenez was released from prison. after serving more than two decades for a 1993 shooting. now 70 cases involving the officer have been reviewed. and as a result, so far five men have been released from prison. >> everybody needs to be aware of this. this happened. it's true.
