"saving private ryan" was popular then. >> great movie. >> yeah, it's a great movie. but there were young'uns picked last night. now tropical storm cindy has moved on from the gulf coast, leaving behind flooding and tornado damage. >> now a tropical depression, cindy is producing heavy rainfall into the ohio valley. there are tornado watches for most of mississippi and alabama. >> and lingering effects along the gulf coast. abc's richard cantu reports. >> reporter: tornado sirens blaring across the south. alabama especially hard hit. >> it was big, guys. it was really big. >> reporter: the national weather service says a

tornado with wind over 100 miles per hour happened in alabama. injuring at least three people near birmingham, alabama. >> it lasted about two minutes and was gone. >> reporter: leaving behind twisted wreckage and 12,000 people without power. >> we're certainly not out of the woods yet. it's a long way from being over. >> reporter: the remnants of cindy continue to soak saturated ground. long after making landfall near the texas/louisiana border early thursday morning. a foot of rain has fallen in spots along the louisiana, alabama,age and floored coasts. reaching hundreds of miles to the north. a flash flood threat continues from louisiana to cincinnati. officials are advising residents to stay on higher ground. even the fire ants are coming to the, devising their own strategy to beat the floodwater. and we are learning more about the boy killed in the middle of the storm. mullen mccabe was on vacation with his family when he was struck and killed by a log.

tossed by strong waves. >> pray for this family. it's a tragic eventual, a tragic day for them, and to keep the family in your thoughts and prayers. >> reporter: richard cantu, abc news, new york. >> cindy has moved away from the coast and has been downgraded. but we're not done with her yet. >> nope. justin povick is keeping an eye on the storm system as it moves across the eastern u.s. good morning, justin. >> tropical storm cindy moving to the north and the east. still breezy conditions for 20 to 25 miles per hour. but by far the big concern here is going to be from the rainfall. we've already had widespread flooding over the deep south and notice as we work our way through time we're looking at heavy rain lifting to the north, even into the greater ohio valley. flash flooding and travel disruptions as we venture into the start of the weekend. kendis? diane? we turn to the uphill battle for the newly-released gop health care bill.

the lesslation would cut medicaid and penalties for people without insurance and blocks funding to planned parenthood for a year. four republican senators have come out against the bill. they say it doesn't fulfill their key promise to repeal obamacare and lower health care costs. but they're open to talks. other gop lawmakers were also less than enthusiastic. >> it's a process that deserves consideration and debate and not knee-jerk reactions. >> it's the best bill possible in difficult circumstances. >> chuck schumer is calling the bill a wolf in sheep's clothing. and the democrats suggest it might be worse than a house version past last month. supporters of course say it will make coverage more affordable. president trump has ended a six-week guessing game, stemming from his private meetings with former fbi director james comey. >> the president now says he did not record those one on one conversations with comey and appeared to be calling the integrity of the special counsel into question. serena marshall joins us with the details. >> reporter: for months, the president has pushed b

russia investigation, even calling it a witch-hunt. now he's going after the man leading it, special counsel robert mueller was appointed to the position by the deputy attorney general after james comey's abrupt firing, and now in a new interview on "fox&friends", he claims mueller and comey are too close. >> he's very, very good friends with comey, which is bothersome. but he's also, we're going to have to see in terms, look, there has been no obstruction. there has been no collusion. there has been leaking by comey. but there's been no collusion, no obstruction, and virtually everybody agrees to that. so we'll have to see. i can say that the people that have been hired are all hillary clinton supporters. >> now those lawyers that have been hired for this investigation must meet the same criteria as any career department of justice official, meaning they cannot look at

their political affiliations in their hiring, only their legal qualifications. it should also probably be mentioned that mueller is a registered republican and was appointed under george w. bush. >> that's serena marshall for us from the newsroom. and a louisiana man is freed after his murder conviction was tossed out. john floyd walked out of a new orleans courthouse yesterday. he'd been behind bars since 1981 in the killing of a newspaper editor. he was convicted on the strength of a confession. new evidence shows he was beaten into admitting to the crime. the ohio college student who died after spending more than a year in a north korean prison has been laid to rest. a funeral was held last night outside cincinnati for otto warmbier, hundreds attended the service at his former high school. hundreds more had to be turned away. warmbier's roommate o
