this morning on "world news now." good news and bad news. as the scorching heat and dry conditions fueled nearly two dozen wildfires. even though temperatures are going back to normal, the fires keep growing. we'll have the forecast ahead. and breaking overnight, the white house issues a warning to the syrian president, saying they have evidence that bashar al assad is planning another chemical weapons attack. and new this hour, the shocking attack at a hot spot for tourists. >> jumped from behind in new orleans' french quarter. the attackers pummeling them before taking their phone and wallet. and rachel takes her suitors far away to norway, where the men play a popular sport in spandex. who got a rose, and who came back state side, we'll have our bachelorette analyst on this

tuesday june 27th. from abc news, this is "world news now." >> in fact, jack was so in to this episode, he, too, is wearing spandex right now. >> well, i was watching it, but i'm not anymore. >> that's called cringing. no doubt. all right, we're going to break it down a little bit later in "the skinny." it was an interesting episode, indeed. but some interesting times right now out west where wildfires are burning in eight states across the west. >> the newest fire is burning in southern california, about 80 miles east of los angeles. it was started by a single car crash and quickly jumped in size to more than 1200 acres. all that happened in just a few hours. >> and most of the fires have been burning fairly quickly in extremely dry areas with low humidity and high winds.

answer -- abc's matt gutman is at the largest fire in utah. >> reporter: an army of firefighters in utah battling a fire that has sent up flames 100 feet high. torching an area the size of washington, d.c. >>ivy nev >> i've never seen a run like a what happened here. eight miles in one day. >> reporter: calling it unprecedented for this time of year, officials have thrown everything at it. planes, helicopters, and over 1100 firefighters. red flag warnings expected to make this fire explode. >> this is what firefighters have been battling all day here. that wind turning small fires into infernos like that, towering 100 feet high. >> reporter: just north of los angeles, this brush fire racing across hilltops, jumping highway 14. >> you can feel the heat. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: motorists fleeing that thundercloud of smoke. the fire moving so fast. the homeowner is spraying the fire with water from his pool.

eventually, the airdrops brought it under control, but in arizona, these aerials show the goodwin fire running out of control. 70 homes under evacuation orders. here in utah over 1500 folks evacuated, 13 homes destroyed. this type of terrain shows you how tricky it has been for firefighters, why it's about so difficult to contain the fires. we are at 9,000 feet. the elevation has taken its toll. and the wind is still howling. in days to come, we're see more hotspots. >> unbelievable how quickly those fires are going. >> hopefully matt is staying a good distance away. >> didn't look like it. maybe matt, be a little more careful. our thanks to matt gutman, we really do appreciate the reporting. and let's get a look at how the weather is affecting all of this. >> the extreme heat will ease, but onshore flow coming out of e

parched dry conditions, and that's not going to ease up as far as causing problems in the desert southwest. late in the week, look for hot, dry conditions to kickback in right along the entire west coast, with the exception of the coastal regions. severe thunderstorms likely to fire off in the north central part of the country with more humid air coming out of the south. damaging winds, isolated tornados, rapid city, bismarck, down towards omaha and causing problems along i-29. in the northeast, watch for thunderstorms in the area of maine. and turning to capitol hill where the gop health care bill is in jeopardy. so much so that vice president pence has invited several senators to dinner to discuss their concerns. >> republican leaders released a revised version of the legislation that includes a six-month waiting period for people who let their coverage lapse. but several conservatives and moderate republicans aren't sold yet.

susan collins became the sixth gop senator to oppose the bill. >> i'm also very concerned about the medicaid cuts, what it means to the most vulnerable citizens. >> here's math about all of this. the nonpartisan congress at budget office says it would leave 22 million more americans uninsured over the next decade. while some young people could see their premiums go down, a 64-year-old would see their annual premium rise by nearly $14,000. other republicans point to the savings. the deficit would plunge $321 billion by 2026. we're following breaking developments out of the white house. in a stern warning to syria. a brief statement issued hours ago says that syria is preparing for another chemical weapons attack. you might remember an attack

in april on a rebel-held province killed dozens of men, women and children. the white house has warned that another chemical attack would end in assad and his military paying a very high price. meanwhile the trump administration is declaring a clear victory in yesterday's supreme court ruling reinstating key components of his travel ban. they have agreed to review the ban. but the ban applies only to those people who don't have a bona fide relationship with a person or entity inside the u.s. the state department will begin implementing the ban on thursday. the family of philando castile has agreed to a $3 million settlement in his death. the agreement with st. anthony came ten days after the officer who fired the fatal shots was acquitted. castile was killed during a routine traffic stop after he let the officer know he was armed. castile had a permit to carry that gun. his girlfriend poste

facebook live, sparking outrage across the country. and a trial is under way for the arizona sheriff known for crackdown on illegal immigrants. sheriff arpaio is accused of defying courts by continuing to make immigration arrests after he was ordered to stop doing so. they say he illegally detained up to 170 people. the tough talk is now being used against him. but his attorneys insist he was cooperating with officials. he is 85 years old. if convicted, he could face up to six months behind bars. police in new orleans are hunting for suspects on a brutal attack on two tourists in the french quarter. surveillance video shows victims jumped from behind by four men who not only beat them but steal their wallets, cell phones and take off. one blow knocked one of those men unconscious.

so that was the scene at san francisco's westfield shopping mall. police, you can see, tried to stop the brawl, but took quite an effort. that mall was forced to close early, and now we have learned that two people have been arrested. an officer also suffered minor injuries. >> what a scene, what a scene of utter

in san francisco, not sure what might have triggered that. well, a colorado mother is claiming she wasn't allowed off a delayed flight at denver as her infant son overheated. do you recall last week's heat wave. emily france and her baby were stuck on a united flight for nearly two hours as the plane sat on the hot tarmac. crew members reportedly did allow them to leave the aircraft for 20 minutes, even providing bags of ice to cool the baby down. the pilot returned to the gate and paramedics were called to meet the plane. the infant is now recovering at home. a 20-pound live lobster found by a tsa agent at logan airport, it was in a checked bag, traveling lobsters are fairly common in new england. >> really? >> it's a thing. the lobster was allowed to travel to its destination. no word on whether it has so far avoided a pot of boiling water. some of the reasons that was
