capital, thousands packing the national mall tonight. jonathan: all of it wrapping up with a fantastic firework show, lighting the skies over the monuments. -- could not ask for a better night. we have team coverage, including the strict security measures in place. we start with the excitement in the heart of d.c., with tim barber live on the national mall. tim: it was not too hot this night, not too wet, and the big difference between this year and last year, you could actually see the fireworks. the fireworks celebrate independence, but they also , whenate 50 years ago their first it was supposed to be on the fireworks under the national mall. >> it was canceled because of high wind, so we had a second date the next night. the rest is history. >> i always dreamed of coming to the

security for the fourth of july celebrations. is live at the marine corps memorial, one of the best places to watch from across the river. jay: that's right, a fantastic spot. security,eefed-up security that you could see, security you could not see. they were making sure the celebration remained uplifting. 4, all the pageantry of july many of the hundreds of thousands of people watching had to work awfully hard for this moment. >> everything is closed. jay: nearly everywhere you turned, particularly in prime washing areas, there were massive shutdowns. a security checkpoint going into the district. >> it's really locked down. it was amazing. people walking for miles to find the idea

showers and embedded thunderstorms. everything was ok downtown d.c. the showers right now are limited. , we have a fewl scattered showers off to the west, moving through fairfax county and montgomery county. the showers will be hit or miss through the overnight. the traffic isat still quite busy with a lot of folks trying to get out from downtown, out to the suburbs. a few showers bethesda, silver spring, not going to amount to a whole lot through the overnight. the umbrella, grab heading out the door tomorrow. highs a little cooler, lower to middle 80's, but looking at another round of showers and storms. the timing coming up. jonathan: we are watching north korea. that is where u.s. secretary of state rex tillerson says that country conducted a test using an intercontinental ballistic missile.

this. this is the kind of missile the u.s. worries about because it can reach the u.s. nancy: the united states reacting swiftly to that news. they say north korea conducted a successful test of a long-range missile overnight. tonight, the united states and south korea holding a joint missile drill in the territorial waters off of south korea. after the launch, the united states says this was done to counteract north korea's destabilizing and unlawful actions. that is what they called them. this is been called a major breakthrough, a two-stage intercontinental ballistic missile that could potentially reach the united states. the news applauded in north korea, while the united states, japan, and south korea have called for an open emergency meeting of the un security council regarding this launch. nancy chen, abc 7 news. alison: the president leaves tomorrow for the g 20 summit in germany. his first up will be in poland.

leaders from central and eastern europe. at the g 20 the president will have his first face-to-face meeting with russian president vladimir putin. tens of thousands of protesters are expected to greet both men. back at home, a gaithersburg family thankful tonight after a close call at their home. they were sitting in their living room when a car smashed into their fireplace. they said it felt like an earthquake. the home was deemed unsafe to live in. the family of three is now displaced. the driver says it was an accident. nobody was seriously hurt. jonathan: fourth of july events in landover taking on a somber tone after a man was found shot to death in the afternoon. the investigation is focused on a busy area of prince george's county. anna-lysa gayle has the latest on the investigations underway tonight. anna-lysa: a man was shot on landover road.

alison: eight welcome back. these are the fourth of july celebrations in montgomery county, the germantown glory fireworks display. family celebrating there were treated to music and plenty of choices from the food trucks. in newn: the beaches jersey were open today. this time they are open for everyone. state parks and beaches were closed after

row homes in baltimore. it took dozens of firefighters to put this out. 23 people have lost their homes. from home toing home, burning 10 homes by the time it was over. two people were hurt, their injuries not serious, but still no word on what started this fire. alison: a sure support for the jury to acquit a minnesota police officer in the deadly shooting of the land of castile -- castile. the judge says the criticism of the jury was based on this dash cam video which was released after the trial, which means the jurors never saw it when they found the officer not guilty. his letter to the jury said in part, you are asked to determine beyond a reasonable doubt whether a crime has been committed. jonathan: remember the special congressional election in georgia last month that was very close?
