terms. we'll see if he raises the sensitive subject of russia's interference in the election. >> reporter: president trump celebrating the fourth in washington. >> our country is doing really, really well. no matter where you look. >> reporter: he embarks on his second foreign trip, with all eyes on that friday face-to-face with russian president vladimir putin. for more than a year, trump has sung putin's praises. >> i think putin's been a very strong leader for russia. he said trump is a genius, trump is leading the party. if putin likes donald trump, i consider that an asset, not a liability. >> reporter: but with days to go, the white house is down playing the meeting, calling it a normal bilateral meeting. and saying little else. in

it a full-fledged formal meeting. the war on terror, nuclear arms control, and russia's extreme dissatisfaction with the sanctions president obama imposed in retaliation for russian meddling in the u.s. election. the white house won't say whether the president will raise the issue of russia's interference or whether he believes russia was behind the hack. >> he believes russia was involved. potentially other countries as well could have been equally involved or could have been involved, not equally. >> reporter: trump has also sent conflicting signals whether he's met putin before, telling david letterman in 2013. >> tough guy, i met him once. >> reporter: last year backtracking. >> i have no relationship with putin. i don't think i've met him. i don't think i've ever met him. >> reporter: friday he will get his chance with the whole world watching. the white house expects this meeting to be brief, that it is doubtful that russia's meddling in the election will be raised,

this point a loser of a topic. gloria rivera, abc news, washington. secretary of state rex tillerson is calling north korea's break through missile launch a new escalation of the threat to the u.s. and the rest of the world. in a defiant show of force, u.s. and south korean soldiers responded by firing deep-strike precision missiles into the south korean territorial waters. this comes as the u.s. military confirms that north korea did in fact launch an intercontinental ballistic missile that has the potential to reach alaska. and as abc's military analyst explains, it could possibly reach even further east. >> they didn't want to overfly japan or russia. the missile itself reached an apex of almost 1700 miles. which means it could have reached anchorage and wouldn't have been far from reaching seattle. the u.s. has been developing a ground-based interceptor system

incoming north korean missiles, but it's very complex science. it's like hitting a bullet with a bullet and although the most recent test was successful, the system itself is barely over 50% reliable. >> thank you very much steven. we turn now to the extreme heat wave in the western u.s. and its effect. >> there are at least 30 wildfires burning. with no significant rainfall expected until next week. nearly a quarter of a million acres have been consumed and new wildfires are likely to ignite thanks to high temperatures and low humidity. >> firefighters are in northern nevada. the earth stone fire has consumed 25,000 acres while the truckee fire is at 30,000 acres. there are more in arizona than any other state. some were started by lightning. a blaze at a popular resort was started by a fireworks show.

minneapolis. and blinding downpours and tornados. >> thanks, paul. and the vatican is acknowledging problems at its children's hospital in rome but dismissing a scathing report as unfounded. they denied the findings of an investigation that said staff cut corners, ignored safety protocols and put children at risk. they pointed to a second review that praised the hospital and blamed the initial report on disgruntled employees. the vatican said it's making a serious effort to resolve any problems. british doctors have dismissed an offer from that hospital to help a baby. the ten-month-old's doctors are planning to turn off life support despite objections from his parents. the pope's hospital said it was willing to keep charlie on life support and allow his parents to decide how to end his life. his parents wanted to bring him to the u.s. for an experimental therapy, and president trump had

as we mentioned earlier, president trump arrives in poland today. officials in charge of one of the memorials to holocaust victims is taking issue with a member of congress. louisiana republican clay higgins recorded a video from inside a gas chamber at what was once the auschwitz death camp. it is now a museum. he said the scene solidified his commitment to protect the u.s. from evil. >> the world's a smaller place now than it was in world war ii. the united states is more accessible to terror like this. horror like this. >> museum officials called that video inappropriate and tweeted a plaque at auschwitz which says you are in a building where the ss murdered thousands of people. remember their suffer and show respect for their memory.

mt. and now to a story out of wisconsin that's tough to decide whether it was a massive fail or a success. >> michael shanahan was looking for a place to crash when he pulled his car over the parking lot, looking for a room at 3:00 a.m. he found a room, he also found a pond. >> he was so tired he put his sedan right into the water. >> i saw this glare and i thought that must be the parking lot, you know, and you can see my wheels are turned to the left, and i drove directly into the water. there was no guardrail or anything, and boom, i'm in the water. >> did you call police? >> no, i was tired. i stay here and basically, i just figured i'd do it in the morning. >> he's happy to talk, happy to talk it all through. >> he left the car in the pond and went ahead and got a room for the night. we'll deal with this tomorrow. >> the police have not decided whether or not to file charges. they think alcohol might have played a role in
