making news in america this morning, happening now, president trump on the international stage delivering a major speech in poland before heading off to germany for the g20 summit and a face-to-face meeting with vladimir putin. a developing story. senators facing health care protests at home this week, but will positions be changing when they go back to washington? caught on camera, a woman apparently being kidnapped thrown into the back of a van in broad daylight. now police are asking for the public's help. and another apology from united airlines over the treatment one mother and her young son received on board.

a good thursday morning, i'm diane macedo. >> and i'm nick watt in for kendis gibson. we begin with president trump returning to the world stage poised to sit down with one of america's biggest adversaries. >> first the president is meeting with the polish president in warsaw. also giving a news conference to start off what will be a very busy day. the president is also giving a major policy speech in poland as well. >> from there he travels to the g20 summit in hamburg, germany. and that's where he will come face-to-face with russian president vladimir putin. abc's emily rau has the latest. >> reporter: president trump and the first lady arrived in warsaw overnight with jared kushner and first daughter, ivanka. it was a red carpet welcome for a visit expected to be short but sweet. >> i'm very proud of this visit. >> reporter: the two presidents meeting at the royal castle in

warsaw. poland reportedly promising big friendly crowds for president trump's first outdoor speech in a foreign country. the polish people and leadership eager for reassurance of u.s. and nato support. >> the idea of the strong alliance, of the bond that is crucial for the security of our region. >> reporter: the president will meet with the leaders of poland, croatia and about a dozen other countries before leaving for germany later this afternoon. the region's relationship to russia underlying many of the talks and ramping up the pressure ahead of his sit-down with vladimir putin. >> i would say at this point it's difficult to say exactly what the russians -- what russia's intention is in this relationship and i think that's the most important part of the meeting to have a good exchange between president trump and president putin. >> reporter: sources tell abc news it is unlikely trump will confront putin about the

one senior administration official says the whole thing could be a waste of time and, quote, a loser of a topic. trade will also be a big topic of conversation on this trip. the president tweeting about that just before leaving saying the u.s. has made some of the worst trade deals in world history. diane and nick. >> that's abc's emily rau for us live from washington. emily, thanks. the president is also talking parade when it comes to north korea threatening to punish countries like china do business there. at an emergency meeting of the u.n. security council u.s. ambassador nikki haley warned that the u.s. is prepared to use military force if necessary. this all comes after north korea's successful launch of its first intercontinental ballistic missile. >> in truth, it is not only the united states and our allies that are threatened, north korea's destabilizing escalation is a threat to all nations in the region and beyond. their actions are quickly closing off the possibility of a diplomatic

>> ambassador haley said the u.s. will propose new security council resolutions against north korea. those could include retricking oil for their military programs and cutting off major sources of hard currency. and the trump administration is urging russia to cooperate with the u.s. to defeat isis and restore stability to syria as the president prepares to meet with vladimir putin, secretary of state rex tillerson released a statement calling for the two to work together possibly on no-fly zone, cease-fires and delivery of humanitarian aid. congressman steve scalise has been readmitted to an intensive care unit three weeks after being shot. he was moved back to icu over new concerns about infection. he's now listed in serious condition. scalise has had several surgeries since the shooting. the plan to repeal and replace obamacare is front and center this week for senators visiting their home di

some of those holding town halls are running into angry protesters like these in harrisburg, pennsylvania, who are concerned they will lose access to health care. senator ted cruz of texas found a more friendly reception at his town hall. he concedes the path to a new plan has not been easy. >> now, the process of repealing it in congress has been messy. it's been bumpy. i am not certain we'll get it done. i hope we will. i believe we will. what i am pressing senate republicans, let's focus on lowering premiums and that's a win/win for everyone. >> president trump is putting pressure on hold-outs to support the bill that would repeal and replace obamacare but he says if they can't back that bill the senate should consider a repeal only option. the chicago police department is conducting a full review after a violent fourth of july weekend. more than 100 people were shot and at least 15 of those victims have died. some of the areas hardest hit were guarded by extra police officers brought in for

holiday weekend. clergy members and elected officials are demanding more be done to make the city safer. a new york city police officer is being remembered for her devotion to family and community. family and friends attended a vigil for officer miosotis familia on wednesday night. she was targeted while on duty by a man with an apparent vendetta against cops and leaves behind a 20-year-old daughter and 12-year-old twins. high temperatures, winds and low humidity are fueling wildfires all over the western states. hundreds of residents of a colorado mountain resort community west of denver are out of their homes overnight. the fire is only 80 acres but is intense and growing fast. officials say there are 34 active large fires in the country right now. eight of those large fires are in arizona. more than in any other state. federal, state and local officials are looking for a transient they believe set a number of small brush fires. he also allegedly

at a forest service employee who was not injured. >> now for a look at your weather. temperatures will be near or in triple digits for the southwest up through the rockies today. storm also move into the southwest but because it's so dry there won't be much rain, just dry lightning which could start new fires and erratic winds could blow fires in different directions. meanwhile, tropical depression 4 as formed in the central atlantic. at the moment it's more than 1,000 miles from puerto rico and could become a tropical storm. if so it will get the name don. several possible paths it could take. by late next week it could be near the east coast. breaking overnight, an earthquake hits western montana near lincoln. early reports from the usgs put it at a 5..

washington and felt in idaho and towns along the canadian border. power is out in lincoln. it seems no injuries and no significant damage. it took three tries but spacex finally launched a communications satellite last night. >> the falcon 9 rocket took off from kennedy space center. previous attempts on sunday and monday were aborted just seconds before liftoff because of technical issues. spacex now has launched three times in just two weeks. and still ahead, breaking news, crews rush to a popular river for multiple rescues overnight. >> some wild scenes as the political crisis in venezuela deepens. lawmakers have now come under attack inside a government building.

venezuelan government supporters storm the national assembly and beat up several lawmakers. the assembly is controlled by the opposition. police assigned to protect the legislature just stood by during the brawl. venezuela has been racked by months of unrest. louisiana congressman clay higgins says he's sorry he recorded a political video inside a gas chamber. higgins made the clip in may while visiting the auschwitz memorial in poland. he said in part that the horrors of the holocaust, quote, show why american homeland security must be squared away. on tuesday the museum posted on twitter calling the video inappropriate. higgins said he did not intend to offend anyone. and no charges will be filed against an indianapolis firefighter who opened fire on a neighbor hitting him four times. both men actually fired at each other after some sort of dispute. prosecutors ruled firefighter dean keller acted in self-defense. the neighbor

and martin shkreli, the so-called tashi farmer ma bro has been ordered to stay quiet during his trial when it comes to the social media. a gag order issued. after he spoke with reporters outside the courthouse last week, the judge did not stop him from posting comments about the trial on social media. hobby lobby will pay a fine for buying thousands of ancient artifacts apparently smuggled out of iraq dating back 5,000 years. the company was warned the items may have been stolen when it bought them six years ago. they were incorrectly identified as being from israel and were labeled ceramic tiles. in addition to the fine, hobby lobby has to give up the art facts. when we come back the mother and child at the center of another pr headache for united airlines. the company is now apologizing. and one way to celebrate turning 100, hit the slopes. ms.

a massive water main break is causing flooding in a denver neighborhood. crews are working through the night making repairs. the pipe that burst is 130 years old. it's unclear what caused the break but this is the second one on that same line in less than a year. drivers are more likely to find flooded roads around the great lakes and from the tennessee valley to the gulf coast. wet roads likely in the appalachian, florida and here and there in the rockies. if you're flying expect airport delays in minneapolis, memphis, washington and philadelphia. >> there is another public relations nightmare for united airlines that involves bumping a paying passenger from a seat he was already occupying. >> this time that passenger was a toddler. abc's linsey davis has the story. >> reporter: shirley yamauch was traveling with his son last thursday paying nearly a thou

ticket. all of a sudden she says a passenger who was on the standby list arrived at the aisle with a ticket for her son's seat. yamauchi says she was forced to hold her son on her lap for the 3 1/2 hour flight. on wednesday united issued an apology to the mother telling abc news we inaccurately scanned the boarding pass of ms. yamauchi's son. as a result her son's seat appeared to be not checked in and we released his seat to another cuss weather. we are also working with our employees to prevent this from happening again. linsey davis, abc news, new york. police are asking for the public's help in tracking down an apparent kidnapper and his victim. the video shows a man grabbing the woman by the hair and forcing her into a van. when she tries to escape he pushes her back in then the van drives away. there's also apparently someone in the passenger seat. now, this all happened in broad

hospital unconsious, and overnight police say he was pronounced dead. police say the other victim, a boy, was conscious and breathing when he was taken to the hospital. but there is no word on his current condtion. a homicide investigation is now underway. developing now in baltimore-- police say they are making progress as they try to track down the man who gunned down the brother of the department's spokeperson. dion smith was shot sunday night. and investigators say they have video of a person of interest in the case. smith's other brother chief tj smith, called on the community to do more stop violence. baltimore is on track for a record number of murders this year. there have been 176 so far. mayor catherine pugh is blaming illegal guns. and she says she will seek emergency legislation in the next session of the legislature to make illegal gun possession a felony. president trump is donating his salary to maryland's antietam national battlefie

his first quarter salary- more than 78-thousand dollars. with the help of an anonymous donor- the contribution was raised to 100-thousand dollars. it'll help restore a historic house there- and replace fencing. the president promised to forgo his presidential salary and donate it to the federal government. right now- a water ride at kings dominion remains shut down after a scary accident. the "tornado" was closed after a tube flipped over on the fourth of july. rider christina orebaugh was knocked unconscious. she spent the night in the hospital where doctors treated her for a broken toe, a broken collarbone, and a fractured shoulder. the ride will remain closed until an investigation is complete. a serious pool problem at a home in arizona. and see if you can spot what it is. take a look. that's right-- an r-v -- crashed right through a fence and ended up in his neighbor's pool. thankfully the pool was not occupied, in fact it was still under construction. no one was injured.. but we're thinking that project - is going to take a bit longer now.
