with german police who unleashed powerful water cannons and pepper spray. one banner summing up the atmosphere. g20, welcome 2 hell. authorities were prepared expecting around 100,000 demonstrators on the streets. officials say the crowd size thursday was only about 8,000 and president trump and russian president vladimir putin in just a few hours sitting down for their first face-to-face meeting. tensions between the u.s. and russia, the highest since the end of the cold war. president trump is expected to push putin on russia's involvement in ukraine and syria. but one topic he will not likely raise, russia's meddling in last year's presidential election. the president was asked about that during his visit to poland yesterday. >> i think it could very well have been russia but i think it could well have been other country. >> do we see president trump who wants to be loved even by vladimir putin or do you see the president trump who wants to be seen as a tough negotiator? >> reporter: president trump has already had his first meeting

angela merkel. the two shaking hands, something they didn't do during their first meeting in the oval office a few months ago. and, diane and nick, a similar scene we'll see when reporters are brought in for the beginning of his meeting with president putin. no word from the white house whether they'll make remarks but, nick, diane, you can bet there will be a lot of questions shouted at them. >> sounds like a pretty small group allowed in that room. i'm wondering how the president is preparing for all of this. >> reporter: just the two world leaders will be in that meeting. the secretary of state, the russian foreign minister and two translators, diane. a very small group, just six people in that room. the president is not known for being a meticulous planning. president putin is known for being a meticulous planner and a white house official tells us the president is going into this not poring over briefing books or materials to bring to the table. they say he's more comfortable

but, diane, you'll remember back in may when the president sat down with the russian foreign minister and the russian ambassador to the united states, later we found out he went off script bragging about firing james comey and he also talked about highly sensitive information, intelligence that was given to the u.s. by the israelis. diane and nick, it certainly seems as if there wasn't a lesson learned from that by letting the president go into a meeting with senior russian officials and winging it. >> abc's karen travers in hamburg, thanks very much. and president trump also addressed the crisis with north korea promising the u.s. will confront that threat, quote, very seriously. one extreme option would be a preemptive military strike but defense secretary james mattis says that could lead to a catastrophic war making it the least likely solution. instead he says the trump administration's priority is to resolve the crisis using less severe means. >> i do not

arrests outside the office of senator john cornyn considered a key vote and a group of protesters made it to the door of senator tom cotton's office. some taking cotton to tank for the bill's projected cuts to the veterans administration pointing out the senator himself is a vet and protesters in senator cory gardner's office in denver did get to speak to him by phone. >> there are many people who agree with you. on the points you made. there are many who don't agree with you on the points you made but i appreciate your willingness to come to the office and share those viewpoints. >> senators will get back to work debating the bill next week. as of now there are ten senators who say they cannot support the current republican bill. nick, diane. >> that's abc's emily rau for us from washington. thanks. congressman steve scalise remains in intensive care after undergoing surgery for an infection.
