announcer: from abc7 news, this is a breaking news alert. alison: the man convicted of killing three people, two of them in montgomery county, gets life in prison. nancy: eulalio tordil's two-day rampage paralyzing montgomery and prince george's county last year. today the case in montgomery county closed. kevin lewis is in rockville. witnesses describe the chilling moments as tordil opened fire last year. kevin: yeah, nancy and alison. today we learned that tordil's surviving victims recall him smiling at them as he pulled the trigger, firing a barrage of bullets. the judge in this case calling his actions "cold and calculated" and then sentenced the 64-year-old to four life terms without parole. in other words, eulalio tordil will die in prison. in court, the defense stated that tordil led a stable life. that was until his wife filed a restraining order.

two-day rampage in 2016. day one, tordil killed his wife and injured a man. on day two in montgomery county, tordil shot three people at the montgomery mall in bethesda, killing one. he also shot and killed a woman in aspen hill. three killed, another three injured. the wife of victim mike win fell looked tordil in the eyes in court today saying, "we never think of you. today, god willing, you will be officially irrelevant." >> miss molina fought for her life. she wrestled the glasses off the face of mr. tordil. when she died she died with his glasses in her hand. the glasses were later linked to him as well as his d.n.a. found on those glasses. kevin: tordil declined to speak today at the sentencing hearing. the public defender serving him in the case saying his

russian president vladimir putin. >> there was a very clear positive chemistry between the two. maggie: he says the president pushed putin right away on russian meddling in last year's u.s. presidential election. >> the president pressed president putin on more than one occasion involving russian involvement. president putin denied such involvement. maggie: the russian foreign minister said president trump accepted the denial but a senior administration official says that is not the case. in any event, the two countries must now move forward. >> it's not clear to me that we will ever come to some agreed upon resolution of that question between the two nations. so the question is what do we do now? maggie: during the meeting, russia and the u.s. agreed on a cease-fire in southwest syria and discussed what to do about ukraine. in meetings with other world leaders at the summit, president trump says he still wants mexico to pay for the wall and d

change with german chancellor angela merkel. she called his view on the topic unfortunate. meanwhile, outside, thousands of protesterrers flood the streets. many violently clashing with authorities. more than 20,000 police have been brought in from across germany. at one point today the protests became so large and no violent that first lady melania trump was trapped in her hotel and had to miss an event over safety concerns. in northwest, maggie rulli, abc7 news. alison: she mentioned the protests. they are surrounding the g20 meetings today in hamburg, germany. more fires set there. in the street, the police are out in riot gear and they are all clashing again. before the scene, the water cannons were brought back out. so they did this, obviously, to try to prevent further disruption. the high-stakes meeting continue there. so they lined the streets, walli

behind this. brad? brad: this is twin brook elementary school in rockville. this is the place where the first incident happened in may. look, there are more serious crimes. but if you have ever lost a purse or a wallet, lost your driver's license, lost your i.d.'s, lost your credit cards, you know what a royal pain this can be. to the 11 victims, he is a class a nuisance. he has been sneaking in schools and daycare centers from silver spring to germantown stealing wallets and purses. he goes straight to stores to use credit cards to make purchases. in several cases he has been caught on camera. so far eluded capture by police. courtney who works as a daycare in georgetown was among the first victims back in may. she says the crime is still causing frustration. >> it's a pain in the neck. have to replace everything. cash, gift cards i can't get

neighbors as this is my school district. they are outraged. they are absolutely outraged because they trusted this man with their children. alison: later this month the school system will hold its first of two meetings at benjamin stoddert middle school to give parents more information on the investigation. nancy: rail service returning to normal this afternoon after a suspicious package was found on the tracks over at the b.w.i. station. marc and amtrak service suspended as a bomb squad robot took a closer look. the item was cleared but you can expect delays on the marc penn line. jeff? jeff: july 4, teresa schaefer got a call a bear was coming her way. she looked out the window and they saw the bear casually strolling by, crossing the street into the backyard of the house right across the way. some neighbors snapping some pictures of the bear as it made its way through the neighborhood. it's just a few blocks away from george mason university in oldtown fairfax. neighbors say the bear casually walking through the yards, was in no hurry. a police car was following it along. finally the bear made its way back in the woods near the green acres senior living facility nearby. now also today people spotted this bear near robinson high school in fairfax. that is about two miles from where we are now. it's unknown if we are talking about the same bear. if that is the same bear that was in the neighborhood here a couple of days ago.

nancy: to a developing story out of oakland where an investigation is underway to figure out what caused a massive fire. the flames ripping through the building under construction. they had to evacuate buildings and several streets were shut down. this shows how bad the flames were. they were so strong, smoke could be seen for miles away. thankfully no one was hurt. alison: well, the georgia mother accused of stabbing and killing four of her children and her husband was in court today. this was just a terribly bizarre scene. isabelle martinez was smiling. she gave a thumbs up. even people sitting next to her was baffled by this. martinez through an interpreter said she would

nancy: escaped inmate in south carolina captured in texas. when he was captured this morning the police say he had two guns pistol and a rifle. on top of that, more than $47,000 in cash. police say he got out by using wire cutters. they believe they were dropped over the prison walls by a drone of all things. he was missing for two days. alison: wow! a terrifying ride for one south florida woman. take a look at this. she is pumps gas. the car pulls up beside her. a man jumps out and grabs her purse. she tries to grab it back but got dragged instead by the robber's car. another car pulls in the gas station and crashes in the get-away car. she did get her bag back. but the two purse snatchers got away. however, miami police say they have the surveillance video and they hope it will help them catch the suspects. nancy: a lot of adrenaline in that video.

okay. speaking of that. two, two mid-flight scares in one day. one of them f-15's had to intercept and escort a plane bound for cuba to the ground. nancy: that is not all. across the country, a delta flight had to return to seattle after a flight attendant was attacked. elizabeth hur explains the air security scares. elizabeth: two disruptions on two planes meant a long night for hundreds of passengers. >> first the 129 with emergency. elizabeth: a delta flight found for beijing forced to return to seattle 45 minutes into the flight after one of the 207 passengers on board, according to eyewitnesses, was walking back and forth to the bathroom in first class and then toward the exit door. that is when the witnesses say a flight attendant was punched trying to stop the 23-year-old man. ultimately other passengers stepped in to subdue the man. delta confirming to abc news overnight the passenger was

removed from the flight by law enforcement without further incident when the aircraft arrived back in seattle. a flight attendant and another passenger were injured and taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. meanwhile, another incident involving an unruly passenger ended with a canadian airliner needing an escort back to montréal. the two u.s. f-15 jets were launched to escort the cuban cuban-bound flight back to canada after officials say a passenger was making threats which have not been revealed but the man we are told was also taken into custody upon landing. 170 passengers were on that flight. but by morning officials say the affected passengers on both flights were able to resume their travels and head to the final destination. elizabeth hur, abc news, new york.

chris christie's trip to the beach in the state's government shutdown may be outlawed in the future. a democratic state lawmakers proposed been aing the -- banning the governor using the beach property in a shutdown. others weren't allowed at all on the beach at the time. another bill would rent the island beach state park estate out to the public. because right now it's reserved exclusively for the sitting governor. nancy: one of the big stories of the week. a lot of people talking about how nice it would be to be out there and certainly hoping that the beach stays nice and for us here in d.c. alison: yeah. it's been a good break. steve: it has. nice transition. nancy: i'm trying to stretch it. i tried. it's friday. alison: the weather, we have had a break in the rain. steve: so nice. alison: coming back? steve: showers and thunderstorms are well west of us. the big question mark, will it hold together? some of them will but to the west of d.c. so, the nationals

taking a stand. nathan? nathan: well, the city of rockville decided three weeks ago to say that their police officers will not be working alongside federal immigration agents but the federal dollars now in jeopardy include bulletproof vests for the police department and crosswalks for the disabled. now attorney general jeff sessions wrote in a letter to different cities around the country demanding that they have local police act alongside immigration agents. if not, federal grant money could be denied. in rockville, federal grant money is used to keep police officers safe and pedestrians safe on sidewalks among other things. the city of rockville was the most recent local city to become a sanctuary city and stand by its decision. >> i heard from a majority of residents that want to make sure that they are working with the community and not targeting particular segments of the

germany, where protests have turned into riots there. these are the latest pictures coming in. groups taking issue with the g20 summit are starting fires and breaking windows as leaders from the 20 richest nations gather there. already as of yesterday there were over 100 officers who were injured in the riots. this now is day two. earlier we saw police turning water cannons on to folks there. the crowds continue to gather deep in the night. we, of course, will continue to monitor the situation and have updates in "abc7 news at 5:00" and 6:00 as well as on "world news tonight" with david muir. nancy: meantime, the first running of the bulls was this morning in the festival in spain. this is dangerous. three people were gored including two americans. fortunately, they are not serious injuries. others treated for bruises. you can see how adrenaline-inducing this is. today's bulls came from a ranch known for raising the most violent bulls. mi

celebration in north korea. the country held a fireworks show to celebrate the successful testing of a ballistic missile this week. this comes as the u.s. says it is prepared to do whatever is needed to counter north korea. pyongyang warns that the u.s. will be doomed to a miserable end if it were to start a war. nancy: "7 on your side" consumer alert now. 222,000 jobs were added in june. a sign that businesses are confident to keep hiring. the unemployment rate moved up a bit to 4.4%. as more americans re-enter the job market looking for work. despite the hiring, though, pay did not go up much for hourly workers. just 2.5% from this time last year. a full percentage point below a pace that is typical of a healthy economy. that jobs report could fuel another federal reserve rate hike. that is the word from fed
