announcer: now, "abc7 news at 6:00". on your side. alison: life in prison without the possibility for parole. that is the sentence for eulalio tordil. michelle: he is the man who killed three people last year including his wife in two different maryland counties after going on a shooting spree to grip the area. county reporter kevin lewis in the courtroom when tordil was sentenced and is live now with how this all played out today. kevin? kevin: tordil's image of him smiling before he fired is in their brains. they say he was upset about the crumbling marriage and the mounting financial issues. one of many angry notes to his late wife gladys reading, "i attempted to talk to you. but no, you went ahead with a temporary restraining order." months later tordil who worked as a federal police officer killed his wife and i

good samaritan in prince george's county. following day he shot four more people in montgomery county, killing two before being apprehended with a swarm of police officers police officn hill. prosecutors say tordil was trying to carjack someone in hopes to flee the area. police found a duffel bag packed with clothes, stash of $20 bills. mini pharmacy of the prescription medicine and loaded murder weapon. >> this man left behind notes that indicated he intended suicide by cop. he didn't have the courage to take his own life but would take lives of others. >> to the sur praise of many, eulalio tordil declined to apologize in court

inova emergency room. another bear spotted this morning two miles away near robinson high school. it is still unclear if these are different bears or the same one. making a bunch of cameos. michelle: hopefully the same one. alison: yes. a man in maine had a close encounter with a couple of bears. michelle: a good thing he is a professional marathon runner. he was out for a morning run when two black bears came out of the woods. he did what he did for a living. make a run for it. >> the number of theories that people have, i mean if you came across a bear, you hide your head and you go down. the theories were not -- i wasn't thinking about them. michelle: nobody has time for the theories at that point. the man says the bears chased him. you might think that is wild. it is. because i didn't know that bears can run up to

pretty fast. the man was able to safely make it to a vacant house. eventually the bears left. alison: so the rest of us who are not marathon runners watch out. it would be a different ending. back at home, the students and some teachers in spotsylvania county are worried tonight if the school will be open for the next school year. the school is in a church in spotsylvania county. the county is now demanding a special permit to operate the school. q mccray explains why there is now a lawsuit in place. q: the baptist church has been running the school under the roof for the last year called summit academy. >> my son patrick was a freshman this past year. and he had an incredible experience. classical education academically was rigorous and challenging. q: that is in jeopardy now. spotsylvania county require the church have a special youth zoning permit to stay open. paperwork that could take three months to a year

>> if we try to stay open the county has threatened to fine us. possible criminal charges. q: he says they are violating the freedom of religion and the first amendment rights. they hired a lawyer and filed injunction in federal court to allow the school to stay open for the next academic year. >> appropriately we feel we have a right to have a school ministry here in the facility. q: the county let them build the education wing. six teachers would be jobless and the high school students without an education the parents already paid for. but they have faith. >> i think they are hopeful that the county government will come to recognize that this school and the church are a blessing to the community. q: i called officials to get their side of the story. they told me they will not comment about any issues under ti

mccray, abc7 news. alison: abc7 is putting the spotlight on education and extended school year. 20 extra days in fact. d.c. says the pilot program is paying off. teachers and the managers are seeing more motivated students along with the better results and the language, arts and math. the chancellor of the d.c. school says he sees students more confident. >> the opportunity had in a museum or some other excursion or additional time with the teachers. the impact it had in terms on the belief and themselves. alison: the program is now in the third year. 4,000 students are participating and 11 schools across the district. the 20 extra days cost about $500,000 per year. michelle: a virginia woman got her wedding ring after they ended up in a landfill. jodie met her husband in 1956 when they were just teenagers. he died

so her wedding rings really holds a lot of sentimental value. that is why when this woman accidently threw the rings in the trash after taking them off to wash the dishes she was devastated. she and her granddaughter searched a nearby dumpster but didn't find them. so they asked county officials for their help. and three employees hand searched bags in the landfill and found her three rings. >> i got on my knees and said thank you, god, for giving them the eyesight to find the rings. then i looked at my husband that night, i always look at him and say good night it's time to go to bed. i said did you send your guardian angel down here today? i know you did. michelle: that is such a sweet story. i don't know how you thank the people who found it. alison: so thoughtful. generous of their time. steve: nice. good story. right before happy weather,
