news at 11:00, on your side. jonathan: we start with stormwatch. they were fast and furious storms during the rush-hour, sending debris flying, and people were scrambling for cover. and another hot, steamy, sunny day in d.c. crews are surveying the damage, but we start with steve rudin who tracked the storms all afternoon. he is here with good news for the weekend. steve: great news through the overnight and into the day tomorrow, the temperatures are cooling down into the 70's, although the heat index values make it feel warmer. at least we have the extreme heat and humidity out of the way. a few scattered showers across extreme southern maryland, not amounting to a whole lot more. tomorrow, instead of a high

upper 80's, near 90, and the heat index near 90. coming up, the next round of hot weather and the next best chance of thunderstorms. all of that in a few minutes. jonathan: some of the damage left behind, look at the size of this tree,. a big cleanup underway. nancy: tim barber shows us the scene. jonathan, there was still a lot going on out here. they are actually removing branches from this massive tree, right into the wood chipper, chopping them up. the base of the tree crashed onto this subaru station wagon and into the homes. they have got most of the branches away from this massive tree, the windows blasted out of the front of the house. the gutter is hanging off the roof, and to the

picking up with a crane one of the branches they hacked off with a chainsaw. two homes were damaged. the home on the left, the person was home and heard this. he said it found it like a branchville, not a tree crashing down. -- it sounded like a branch fell. >> heard a crash, the power went out. within realized we had a big problem when we looked out the front door because we could not look out the front door. tim: this is all that is left of the tree. crews expect to have this cleaned up tonight. tim barber, abc 7 news. jonathan: tim, thanks. the weather made for a frustrating commute on the metro after a train struck a tree branch that had fallen into the path of the train near dunn loring. there was minor damage to the train, and the conductor of the train slowed the train

like on the scene earlier. according to fairfax county police, this happened on dean drive after they got a call a little after 2 p.m. it is not clear who called, but the caller said some he might be killed in the house. when they got here, they could not make contact with anybody inside, so they basically broken and discover the bodies. this home is within a stone's row of kent gardens elementary, also very close to mclean high school. neighbors say this kind of thing is unheard of here. >> you don't expect things like this to happen, especially in an area like this. and then something like this happens and you don't know how to process it. right now i'm in shock something to doors down for my house occurred. really scary. >> there was a grandmother, mother, and daughter who want to the local elementary school with my daughter as wl.

tears after the judge discolored a mistrial. the caterer was stabbed to death nearly a year ago during a dispute. it started with a small hole, then another home was torn apart and sucked in. 11 families are being forced from their homes as a result. tonight the massive sinkhole outside of tap, florida, is growing, swallowing two houses and threatening more. the family of this house getting out minutes before the ground gave way. >> so emotional. i started crying and everything. we got the dogs out. we cannot save anything else. jonathan: the home sinking into the mud. earlier, they were calling 911. >> there is a sinkhole next to our neighbors house and it's eating the house completely. jonathan: within minutes, it was crumbling. the sink hole spread across the street, already over 250 feet wide by 50 feet deep.
