telling a fish tale. we do say good morning on this monday. we start on a tragic note, a tragedy indeed. one man remains missing. nine members of his family killed in a flash flood in arizona. >> more thunderstorms and therefore more flash floods likely in the area today. >> the radar there but here's the video from yesterday. the family swept away in the flood. they had gathered at a popular swimming hole and had no warning before the wall of water roared through the narrow canyon. abc's elizabeth hur with more. >> reporter: with crews in the air and search dogs on the ground rescue and recovery operations stretching into day three in central arizona. >> our trail is blocked off because of this. >> reporter: this woman caught the frightening scene on her cell phone as a flash flood sent water, debris and mud rushing down a mountain into the river

below. >> there's the son over there and the mom is in the water. >> reporter: eyewitnesses say dozens of swimmers caught off guard held on to whatever they could to stay alive. >> finally got rescuers on site. >> reporter: four people were rescued and flown to hospitals with hypothermia. >> one of the witnesses said he looked up and saw a wall of water coming toward him. >> reporter: that wall of water so powerful authorities confirm so far at least nine people including two children were killed. >> i've been with the sheriff's office 13 years and this is the worst flash flood accident we've had. >> when it rains it really pours, not only that it knocks down trees. >> the floods triggered by torrential rain in the area pounding this waterfront restaurant and uprooting trees in nearby neighborhoods. and unfortunately for that same area and across arizona the danger isn't over yet. with new flash flood watches now in effect throu

adrienne and kendis. >> yeah, elizabeth, the national weather service telling people to avoid the area moments ago. thank you. we'll move on to turn to president trump's slipping approval ratings down to an all-time low. six months into the job. >> as the president copes with a stalled health care bill and the russia probe, a new abc news/"washington post" poll shows just 36% of americans approve of his presidency. that's the lowest level at this point in 70 years of polling. abc's david wright has more. >> reporter: abc news/"washington post" poll shows donald trump is off to the worst start of any president since polling began. americans have deep concerns about his competence and effectiveness. two-thirds don't trust him to negotiate with other world leaders. nearly half say the u.s. has grown weaker on the world stage on his watch. trump does have die-hard supporters.

not you. >> reporter: but they're in the minority. trump pushed back the abc/"washington post" poll, even though almost 40% is not bad at this time, was just about the most inaccurate poll around election time. not true. abc's last poll before the election predicted the national results within two points showing hillary clinton winning the popular vote, in fact, the only other president to rate below 40% six months into his term was gerald ford, after ford pardoned richard nixon for watergate. one major stumbling block for trump is russia. >> i have nothing to do with russia. i told you. >> reporter: six out of ten believe russia did try and influence the election and what about that meeting last june when don junior, jared kushner and campaign chair paul manafort sat down with a russian lawyer whom they were told had dirt on hillary clinton. >> here you have evidence in black and white that, yes,

russians to give them dirt. >> reporter: the poll shows nearly two out of three americans agree that meeting was inappropriate. he's tweeted before that in his view, any negative polls are fake news. david wright, abc news. >> now, on the bright side for president trump the poll shows americans have a pretty low opinion of democrats too. only 37% say the party stands for something and most say the party is just anti-trump. the latest republican plan to repeal and replace obamacare is on hold because a key vote will be missing. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell forced to delay a vote on the bill after senator john mccain had surgery to remove a blood clot. with mccain out for at least a week republicans won't have the 50 votes they need and there's another delay, the congressional budget office will not release its analysis of the bill today as initially planned. and more now on senator

that blood clot was removed from above his eye and doctors in phoenix say he's recovering well at home but some neurosurgeons not involved in mccain's treatment tell "the new york times" his condition and the recovery period could be longer, up to several weeks and they say a blood clot in that area is usually very concerning. mccain is 80 years old. he has a history of melanoma. pathology reports expected back in several days. the united states is calling for the release of all americans unjustly detained in iran after a ten-year prison sentence was handed down to a chinese-american citizen. the 37-year-old princeton grad is accused of infiltrating iran and they accused tehran of continuing to detain foreigners on false charges. there are a number of wildfires that are burning in california. the whittier fire near santa barbara is one of the biggest out there. crews are setting off intentional fires to burn off grass and try to keep the fire from spreading.

destroyed 17 homes, grown to more than 18,000 acres. two big fires to the north have also forced residents to evacuate. there are now nearly 50 active large wildfires burning in more than a dozen western states and you can see the pattern that's creating it. red flag warnings are up for parts of the west and those high temperatures are now shifting to the east. lightning from the thunderstorms in the mountains could spark new fires. and now for a look at the monday forecast. good morning, summer thunderstorms in the four corners region specifically southern portions of arizona, heavy thunderstorm causing concern for dangerous flooding. that's going to affect flagstaff, phoenix down towards tucson, complicating matters along i-17, 10 and 40. urban flash flooding, sudden flooding of desert washes and blowing dust in the desert. flooding not only a concern there but in

steamy flow from the carolinas down to the gulf coast. i'm accuweather meteorologist paul williams. well, this morning hollywood is mourning the loss of acting legend martin landau. the academy award winning actor died in los angeles. his career spanning 70 years including notable roles on tv and movies. landau was perhaps best known for his role on the tv series "mission: impossible." >> he won a best supporting actor for his portrayal of bela lugosi in "ed wood." martin landau, 80 years old. we'll have more on his remarkable career later on. wall street getting set for another opening with major averages at record levels. and an incredible scene from st. louis. how that suv ended up on the roof of a house. and "game of thrones" returned. it had twitter going crazy overnight and did some damage

st. louis. witnesses say a speeding suv jumped a curb and landed on the roof of a house. the driver was stuck for an hour. he was taken to the hospital in critical condition. and an incredible survival story in the meantime, in orlando following this freak accident. a 7,000-pound pipe fell on top of a minivan. the driver only suffered a cut on his forehead and received a few stitches. the four young men whose bodies were found in philadelphia last week were remembered last night. more than 1500 community member, family and friends held a vigil in their memory. also last night, grim details from the grandparents of one of the victims. they reveal the other three families helped investigators find the fourth body

to go along with the plea deal for the suspect if he'd reveal where that body was. >> minneapolis residents want answers after an australian immigrant was shot and killed by police. there was a vigil last night for justine damon killed by police responding to a possible assault near her home. investigators say the officers' body cameras were not turned on as is required. she was reportedly engaged to be married next month. chicago is mourning the loss of a dedicated community leader. william cooper was among ten shot to death over the weekend. ten. he was gunned down less than a block away from the nonprofit he ran. police are searching for a suspect. a 9-year-old boy was also killed by a drive-by shooting. nearly 40 others were injured. the financial markets open on a big roll. the dow working on three straight record closes

least a year. today marks one-month since a collision with a container ship killed seven crew members. a crime alert in prince george's county. police say a man, who's body was found in the street over the weekend-- was murdered. the body was found a little after four o-clock sunday morning... in the middle of the street on 60th avenue in riverdale. the victim is a hispanic man in his 30's. investigators say an autopsy showed trauma to the body caused his death, and they are now looking for witnesses. this adds to a spike in violent crimes in prince george's county this week. last week-- the police department announced that officers will now work 12 hour shifts, to help stem the crime surge. since he's no longer the head of the f-b-i. james comey may be ready to try his hand at a different profession. according to the new york times-- comey is writing a book about his principles and his public service. president trump fired comey in may for his handling of the investigation into hillary clinton's e-mail server. but comey later told lawmakers that trump pressed
