breaking news this morning on "world news now." senator john mccain has brain cancer, doctors removing a tumor after discovering it during another procedure. we'll have the latest on his condition and prognosis. and president trump's hard words for his own attorney general, saying he wouldn't have appointed him if he knew he would have recused himself from the russia investigation. that stunning admission just ahead. and new this half hour, the bizarre moment when a man pulls a gun out on a utility truck. >> guy shooting out the tires. >> one of the workers pulling out his camera to film a neighborhood resident apparently just snapped, firing multiple rounds at the vehicles.

we are joined now with more. good morn. troubling news there for the senator and his family. >> we have the latest for you. he has survived torture as a prisoner of war in vietnam, and even previous bouts of cancer. he is preparing for a new bout with a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer. >> if we're going to stay here to work, let's get come work done. >> reporter: just one week ago, a fiery mccain urged his senate colleagues to fight for their priorities. the very next day he flew home to arizona for surgery to remove a blood clot above his eye. that thwarted republicans' plans to vote on health care reform but led to this diagnosis from the mayo clinic in phoenix, a brain tumor known as glioblastoma, afflicting just three out of every 100,000 people in the u.s.

tumors that doesn't have a particular cure. it is not a type of treatment that you can say is likely going to lead to cure. >> reporter: the former presidential candidate has had cancer before, between 1993 and 2002. this latest diagnosis for the 80-year-old republican unleashed an immediate round of support. >> we talked about five minutes. it's going to be a tough way forward. he says i've been through worse. this disease has never had any more worthy opponent. >> reporter: mitch mcconnell called mccain a hero, saying, quote, i know he will face this challenge with the same extraordinary courage that has characterized his life. former secretary of state hillary clinton tweeted that mccain is as tough as they come. and former president obama warned, cancer doesn't know what it's up against. give it hell, john. in a touching online tribute, mccain's daughter meghan

confessed her fears of losing her father, but echoed the conviction of others, writing cancer may afflict him in many ways but it will not make him surrender, nothing ever has. now the senator's office says he is in good spirits and will remain in arizona now, confident that any future treatment will be effective. though they don't know yet exactly what that treatment will entail. >> there's a long road ahead. history will tell us that. because some people may have remembered hearing about this particular form of brain tumor before. >> this form of brain tumor, glioblastoma is the same one that ted kennedy battled before passing away in 2009. but so far because of the location of the tumor above his eye, it may be easier to handle and could mean less potential damage to major brain function, but it's also the same tumor that beau biden, the late son of joe biden battled before he passed away in 2015.

would have appointed someone else. >> he also said if mueller looked into his family's finances unrelated to russia, he would consider it crossing a red line. not exactly saying what that means in the future. >> he didn't say what he would do if he crossed that red line. speaking of red lines, the president is ending a covert cia program to arm and train moderate rebels who are fighting the regime there. the "washington post" reports that phasing out the operation is one way the president is trying to work with russia which has long pushed the united states to halt that program. the move is also seen as acknowledgement by the u.s. as limited ability to remove bashar al assad from power. more than 4,000 people are out of their homes in central california because of a massive wildfire. the detwiler fire has destroyed at least 29 homes and threatened thousands of other buildings. its size nearly doubling in one
