announcer: now, abc 7 news at noon -- on your side. >> we begin with the cleanup effort that continues across maryland, crippled by a possible tornado on kent island. sunday's storm was so strong it on severalspots homes. we have a look at the destruction. first, we begin with josh knight with an update on last night's storm and what we can expect today. >> the good news is things are going to be much quieter today.

isolated thunderstorms, but not what we had yesterday. let's start with what's going on at noon. it feels like about 90 degrees. inin leesburg, 90 two quantico. already working our way into the mid 90's for today. that's the actual heat. then there is humidity in there as well. a few showers worked their way across the area this morning. what we are going to look for next are things that tart to fire up a little further to the west. not -- start to fire up a little further to the west. right around the blue ridge mountains, that is where we will look for things to pop up in the next few hours. overall, a decent amount of sunshine, but right around 2:00, that's when we start to get a few showers and thunderstorms. they work their way around the d.c. area around 4:30 p.m. not

but not out of the question that we could see wind gusts. that is something we will have to watch as we go through the day. we will look at those thunderstorms as we go through the afternoon. there are big improvements in store for tomorrow. today, temperatures around 95. tomorrow, in the 80's. we will talk about that in just a minute. >> thanks, josh. jonathan is giving us a look at the destruction on the ground. here is his story. >> at first i saw what looked like a waterspout. the damage east of the bay bridge is extensive and widespread. homes leveled. roofs and decks ripped off. spilled below.nd >> it was chaotic. you heard things hitting the house

a large maple tree fell onto the roof of the house. >> just down 50 east, more dramatic images on thompson creek road. emergency crews started mobilizing before sunrise. night was the most intense storm i have ever felt. that structure, i am just seeing it for the first time, that was standing yesterday. >> at no major injuries reported. church says that's by the grace of god. just hours after children packed the rec center, it was obliterated. >> the building was destroyed. i just thankful that nobody got hurt. >> back here

thousands remain without power. this is why. this is route 18, which runs parallel with route 50 in town. you can see a row of metal and wooden power poles have been bent and snapped in half. some are severely leaning. i was just told by the power company that crews will be working 16 hour shifts to try to get everyone's power back on. >> cleanup just getting started in stevensville, maryland. just after 1:00, a possible tornado ripped through the area. incredible.s this is one of the hardest hit areas. you can see what it's a left of this house, contents of the home thrown everywhere. i found a colander here. take a

the roof of the home, debris everywhere. we have shingles from the roof itself. the national weather service survey crews are going to be out here for the rest of the day assessing the damage, whether this was in fact a possible tornado or if it was straight-line wind. theme, powern lines down. you see this lawn chair and the house behind me was actually lifted off its foundation and .hifted there is a gas leak. residents are being asked to stay put so survey crews can get out here and assess the damage. one thing for sure, cleanup will be going on for several days to likely several weeks. reporting in maryland, eileen whelan, back to you. >> all right, well the stormwatch seven weather team is always on your side.

to stay safe when ever weather strikes. the death of a 10 year girl in maryland is being investigated by police in massachusetts. a girl was watching her father change a flat tire when another driver hit her while trying to avoid another accident. that girl died in an accident. been charged. has now to a disturbing story in texas. 10th person dead in a smuggling attempt on wrong. abc's danya bacchus with more on what we know about the driver of that truck. >> as many as 100 undocumented immigrants were crammed into a tractor-trailer, the air-conditioning not working, parked outside as san antonio walmart. they were s

triple digit heat. >> folks were literally baking in the heat of texas sun. >> the immigrants coming from mexico to america. so far, 10 people have died. 30 people, including two children, were rushed to the hospital, some suffering from dramatic brain injuries. >> a lot of heatstroke and .ehydration >> today, the suspected driver in federal court. a walmart employee called 911 when he spotted a disoriented man who was desperate for water. , vigils in san antonio to remember the victims of one of the worst cases of human smuggling in texas. earlier this month, an officer found 12 people in the back of a non-air-conditioned box truck. one of the deadliest cases happened in victoria,

in 2003, when 100 people died. saw people running into the woods. immigration agents say they are now searching for anyone else connected to this operation. metro, another big headache for riders this morning. down,d line was shut forcing dozens to take shuttle buses. riders are plain fed up with the issues. mornings a rough commute for those who take the red line. this was the scene around 7:00 this morning as hundreds of people waited aboard shuttle buses, pressed into service between growth and center heights. there was a shutdown of the red line for more than an hour in both directions.

maryland. you will notice those flecks of green. not going to be any rain actually coming down. aat and humidity allows us few showers and thunderstorms later on today. right as we get to 2:00-3:00, that's when i suspect -- expect some of this to fire up. again, the chance we could get a thunderstorm a little on the stronger side not out of the question. fast forward to tuesday, that will be more of a dry day. we get a breeze out of the northwest. extra cloud cover is going to feel so much better tomorrow. a good improvement. wednesday, still a dry day, not exactly pretty. around 93 for the heat index at noon. to 95 or 96, not as bad

and muggy. dropping down to the 60's, still on the muggy side, getting more comfortable, but not quite there. temperatures around lunch time thanks to some of the cloud cover and air mass hanging around the 80 degree mark. finally, get out of the office and enjoy your lunch outside. will seee board, we big improvements, just-in-time also for the nats to get back in town. our game tuesday is going to feel great. by thursday, temperatures start to rebound. 92 today, mid-80's for tuesday and wednesday. try but dealing with extra cloud cover. rain and thunderstorms as we work our way into thursday, friday, saturday of next week.
