with the statement. emily row has the latest. >> reporter: the white house admitting president trump helped craft his son's statement about his meeting with the russians during the campaign. >> the president weighed in as any father would, based on the limited information that he had. >> reporter: don jr. initially claimed he and the russian lawyer discussed adoptions and that it was not a campaign issue. then days later, e-mails revealed don jr. agreed to the meeting because he was promised dirt on hillary clinton. for weeks, president trump's own attorney denied the president had any involvement with that original statement. >> the statement that was released on saturday was released by donald trump jr. and i'm sure in consultation with his lawyers. the president wasn't involved. >> reporter: but sources revealing to abc news the president dictated the statement himself, the "washington post" reporting the president ignored advice to be more transparent and truthful. >> he certainly didn't dictate, but he, like i said, he weighed
