but the delays are stretching some ten miles in the southbound lanes. so be aware of that. >> two people were injured when a car stolen in mount ra near crashed in theirs. when they tried to pull over the two men in the carjacked vehicle they ran a red light hitting the other car. the carjackers ran but the police did catch up with them. the two people injured in the other car are expected to be okay. alison: well, tonight, investigators are trying to figure out how a rookie d.c. firefighter was hit by a ladder truck at the scene of this fire here early this morning. he is in critical condition tonight. d.c. bureau chief sam ford is live at 8th and f street in northeast where it all happened. sam? sam: we have all seen fire scenes where people are in a hurry. equipment is every which way. trucks this way, hoses that way. as one firefighter put it to

firefighting involve more than just running into a burning building. d.c. firefighter dane smothers age 28 is listed in critical condition after medstar washington center following surgery. he was hit by a fire truck. he arrived on engine three. the truck on the left. jumped often of it and he was hit by truck seven, crushed in the upper body. the engine three firehouse where he was based expressed much concern today. >> when we have an emergency incident, sometimes particularly the younger members get focused on the incident versus everything else going on around them. sam: major crashes are investigating what happened. it was busy overnight for the d.c. fire e.m.s. in addition to f street there were house fires on buchanan northeast and van buren street northwest. a car into a house on d street southeast. at smo

and all across the country are taking a second look at their ford explorers. some allow carbon monoxide in to the s.u.v. essentially knocking out whoever is inside, even if they are driving. some local agencies use similar vehicles. tonight we found out montgomery county is inspecting the fleet after cracks were found in exhaust manifolds which means fumes could leak. >> the driver may not smell it. it's not a smell you will detect. if they have the window cracked they could circulate right through. we have a grey concern about the on traitors and that is why we take it seriously. alison: the safety administration and ford are investigating a million explorer s.u.v.'s. so far more than 2,000 complaints have been filed. larry: wow! let's get back to breaking news. we talked about it at the top of the hour. power pole and the downed lines blocking route 29 in montgomery county. this is also keeping people from getting in and out of their

burtonsville. let's get to jeff goldberg. he is there on the scene live for us with the latest. jeff? jeff: well, larry, we have a lot of frustrated residents. we have drivers that are extremely frustrated. 29 is closed for miles in both directions. that is because of the situation we are looking at right here. you can see b.g.&e crews trying to repair the power line. at 1:00 this afternoon the power line, something caused it to fall to 29. a truck driving by caught the power line causing that power pole to bend. thankfully in one was injured in this situation. but it obviously caused a great deal of concern with the live power line going across 29. 29 was shut down. not too long after that. now as we take a look at what is going on, on the ground view we have a lot of residents from the country place apartment complex. who cannot get into where they are going. i'm joined now by graham

news. nancy: i'm nancy chen at the "live desk" where we are following breaking news in the investigation of the russian interference in the last presidential election. "wall street journal" reporting special counsel robert mueller has empanelled a grand jury in d.c. the move suggests that he think he is will need to subpoena record and hear witness testimony for the investigation. there is a lot to unpack hear. we are working to learn more about the story and we'll bring you details as soon as we get them. at the "live desk," nancy chen, newsom. larry: thank you. the trump administration says baltimore is at risk of losing out of a new program designed to help cities struggling with gun violence. u.s. attorney general jeff sessions says it is one of four cities that will be ineligible for the program unless they give up the sanction ware city status. the new program specifically helps fight drug trafficking and the gang crime. letter from the justice department says the cities have until august 18 to give federal authorities access to jails and start giving the notice before anyone wanted on immigration violations is released fro

alison: 7 is on storm watch with another chance of showers around the area tonight. the chief meteorologist doug hill in the weather center with what we need to know tonight. doug? doug: between 4:45 and 5:20 that was the active time of the new storm building up, warning issued. now it's settling down. the only area we have heavy weather is northeast of washington metro. we will zoom in to this severe thunderstorm warning that runs from the south side of baltimore to the north side of towson. that is it. there is a lot of lightning. the southern side moving away. that will settle down. otherwise just have a couple of spots here and there. showers and the thunderstorms that are developing through chantilly. that is about it. there are still chances for more to develop in the next hour or two but generally most of the action is over. it will calm down and be muggy. only drop to 70's. tomorrow one more day of thunderstorm possibilities. as we look at the future cast through tonight to tomorrow, this starts off quiet enough in the morning. through the day, more storms may develop. 67 to 74

door are covered. the grass unmowed. two warn out cars out front. >> who lives like that? richard: inside 43-year-old moore kept his girlfriend and two sons age 8 and 11 hostage for two years. by force, intimidation or deception according to a court document. >> i'm shocked that it would happen this locally. it's also pretty awful. it's an awful thing to happen to them. >> the woman and two boys were discovered saturday at 5:00 in the evening. when the police stopped by after a call by a concerned citizen. the investigators say when the officer began talk to moore the three ran out the side door. the boys telling police they had never been to school. >> it's bizarre. it's just sad, actually. richard: amy fitzpatrick said over the weekend she met the boys outside her house and began asking questions. she said they were neat and clean and showed no signs of abuse. >> they told me they were homeschooled.

they told me they were moving on sunday to pennsylvania. richard: the police say the woman was hospitalized with injury from alleged assault. the two boys appear healthy and are with family members. >> i'm glad they are out and safe and with their mom. i kind of had a little tug at my heart for the two little boys. richard: amazingly, all the utilities in the house were working at this time. a lot of folks say the case has left them shaking their heads. moore faces abduction and assault charges. in spotsylvania, richard reeve, abc7 news. larry: thank you, richard. enough developments in the case of a massachusetts woman who encouraged her boyfriend to commit suicide. michelle carter today convicted of involuntary man slaughter in june and reports today that in carter's sentence. >> a sullen michelle carter standing in a massachusetts juvenile courtroom facing her fate. >> guilty finding on the indictment charges you with the

of conrad roy iii. now sentencing you to two and a half years in the bristol county house of correction. >> the judge recommending that carter serve 15 months behind bars but staying that sentence until after her appeal. the 20-year-old convicted in june of involuntary manslaughter in the suicide of her boyfriend conrad roy. just before the judge's decision thursday emotional statements from roy's father and sister. >> he gave me an amazing 13 years being my best friend and best role model that any little sister could ask for. >> michelle carter exploited my son's weaknesses and used him as a pawn if her own well-being. >> in 2014, roy locking himself inside his truck dying from carbon monoxide poisoning. during carter's trial prosecutors showing text messages between she and roy. revealing carter encouraged roy to get back in the truck. repeatedly urging him to go through with his plan to take

but we have been now 47 days without a drop of rain. the real concern now the haze. but really the fire danger. take a look at this fire danger here. the flames yesterday came next to the house. burned the side of the house. the fire is warped. the fire danger is really high. it continues to be high. the fire crews here are still on scene at the fire located partway between centralia halfway between seattle and portland. the whole thing broke out, a fast-moving fire that really consumed a lot of acreage in this area. people were scrambling trying to get out of the way of the whole fire scene here. frightening thing for folks here. it's really concern all over the northwest. one of the big impacts from the neighbor or the north, 100 or so fires burning in british columbia turning the air

level. portland seeing the same impact sitting on pacific coast. it's not used to the terrible air quality. people are urged to stay indoors but that is a challenge because with the heat many folks are eager to get outside to beat the heat. there is a heat warning with the temperatures that are hovering near the 100 mark in the late afternoon. people head to the water parc and the livestock and the kids. the heat and the haze is not posing too much of a problem for this weekend's big air show. with blue angels. we thought the skies would be perhaps too hazy for them but they are practicing in the hazy skies to perform for the seefair this weekend -- sea fair over this weekend in seattle. the fire crews are still out here. this is a real concern now. but this is the second day of this heatwave. we are at 92 degrees here.

we are heading to 100 degrees and we are approaching the washington, d.c. style humidity. we are at 45%. not quite the 55% you have but it's not what people here really expect. to make it through next few days. it's hot on the northwest and on the west coast. reporting live for abc7 news, keith eldridge. alison: certainly. they are not used to it out there. doug: they get the heatwaves. alison: a lot don't have air conditioning. doug: no. when the pacific northwest has heatwaves they do it big-time. here we have one more day of the heat and the humidity. it's not extreme. 90 degrees is not extreme for us. alison: no. doug: it will be nice over the weekend. let's get you started. we have the storms bouncing around the area. look at the doppler radar. the heavier storms now are in delaware. they have a flood warning in fact for longer south and east of dover. headed down the shore there. we have other little areas of showers and the storms popping. the biggest thi

to d.c. but local to baltimore. a severe thunderstorm warning over the northern suburbs. now we have new areas of storm we are keeping an eye on. western fairfax county. along 66. showers and the storms continue to develop. they are moving northeast. we will keep an eye on that and headed to the potomac river and across to maryland. we are watching the other possibilities here for the next couple of hours. downstream, pocket of showers and storms. the closer we get to sunset the more we will see that action settle down. as the daytime heating starts to diminish. overnight is partly cloudy and muggy. it's very light winds out of the south. through the day tomorrow we have a repeat process. is there is a difference tomorrow. the storms will develop in a warm and a humid air mass. cold front that is coming from the west tomorrow afternoon. tomorrow evening. tomorrow night. that will give a little more lift. it will create the isolated afternoon thunderstorms. we will hit 9

possibly numerous thunderstorms tomorrow evening, tomorrow night and after sunset. as the front approaches. but behind the cold front for the weekend, cooler, drier air moves in. a little bit of a breeze. let's talk about friday and the possibility of the severe weather. severe storm prediction center put out an area this anout look in yellow here of a slight risk of severe weather tomorrow afternoon and evening. from the d.c. metro area to the north and the west. all the way to the interior knew england. the -- interior new england. we are talking about frederick county and frederick county, virginia, as well. panhandle of west virginia in a slight risk. everybody else is in the marginal risk. as far as the numbers we will be in the 80's tomorrow morning and we will climb up to the 90-degree mark or so. at 5:00, just an indication on this computer model of the storms popping mainly west. that makes sense. that is the direction from which the front will come. then we get to the evening and the nighttime hours and we will see

alison: look at that. do you buckle up when you ride in backseat? four out of five adults asked from the institute of safety don't bother and we look at why they may want to rethink the decision. marci: doing just one thing proven to save lives. many adults aren't buckling up. according to a new survey adults riding in backseat of vehicles are far less likely to wear seat belts than when they sit up front. some saying they simply forget. but the most common explanation of those surveyed the belief it's not necessary in the rear seats.

for years it's safer in the backseat and we should put our children back there. but people have a misunderstanding about the safety of the rear seat. marci: the dangers are clear. in this crash, you see this father and son violently thrown from their seats. and in this accident, the unrestrained woman on the left sent flying into the window. woman next to her was wearing a seat belt. >> when passengers in the backseat aren't buckled up they are putting themselves at risk and they put other people in the vehicle at risk. marci: drivers are twice as likely to be killed in the crash when the passenger sitting behind him or her is not wearing a seat belt. this shows what can happen. the unbelted dummy in the backseat slams in the driver's seat. the dummy behind the wheel hits the air bag and steering wheel at impact at 35 miles per hour. the author of the study remind people that the need to buckle up includes anytime you are a passenger in

larry: retired army colonel won multimillion defamation lawsuit against a bloger that accused him of rape. it's a unique case because she made the claim online 30 years after they were classmates at west point. joce sterman has the new developments in the case. joce: will was a decorated army colonel up for general. in 2015 when we broke the story, we discovered military documents that showed he was filly qualified for the pro -- fully qualified from a promotion. but he said a blog post from a woman he hadn't seen in decades changed everything and landed them both in court in fairfax county.

>> did you hall of fame susan shan -- rape susan shannon? i did not. reading the blog every aspect is verifiably false. joce: and the jury agreed with him. he sued a west point classmate susan shannon for defamation. she claimed in a blog post in 2013 that he raped her nearly 30 years earlier. he said that the false claim cost him a promotion to general. now the case could cost shannon millions of dollars. a jury this week found the claims false and defamatory awarding him $8 million in damages. when we talked years ago he told us the day in court was not about money but vindication. >> money is not the reason we did this. this all about clearing my name. joce: suzanne shannon's attorney didn't comment when we asked for a reaction but they plan to have it fought to throw it out lat

his client is pleased but would rather have his reputation than have to file the lawsuit in the first place. back to you. alison: thank you. one of the founders of the legendary group grand master flash and the furious five is facing a murder charge. kid creole was arrested yesterday accused of stabbing a 55-year-old homeless man in new york city. police say he got in an argument with the victim alleging that the man said something that offended the rapper. larry: lawyers today filing a class action lawsuit on behalf of several local women who said a doctor sexually assaulted them. they say dr. brian williams assaulted them in physical exams in maryland and virginia. >> dr. williams was an anesthesiologists and a pain management doctor with kaiser from 2010 through 2014. dr. that time he sexually assaulted at least a dozen women we know of

assaults took place in 2013 and 2014. the state board suspended his license and kaiser fired him. alison: the first look at an eye test that could help diagnose autism. it measures rapid eye movements which can identify the issues in an area of the brain that is key to emotional and the social development. for now the test is used on the kids between the ages of 10 and 16 on the autism spectrum. but researchers hope it will be a tool for early detection. larry: early detection is key goal of all of the folks working in the neurodevelopmental disorders. >> the sooner you know a child is on the autism spectrum or has dyslexia, or a neurodevelopment disorder, the sooner you know the quicker you can do something about it. alison: more research still needs to be done. autism affects 1 in 68 children in the united states. the d.c. department of

larry: well, new information tonight about the amazon john fair that had people lining up across the country. they were looking to fill 50,000 positions nationwide. i drew 20,000 people in ten states. but amazon says another so,000 candidate applications were processed today. meaning about 30,000 people applied for the jobs. there is no word tonight on how many of them were in baltimore or how many of the applicants will be hired. one thing we do

country place apartment complex have been allowed to walk in and out. not allowed to drive. show you what is going on now. the power crews are shoring up the power line that snapped earlier today. what happened at 1:00 today, somehow, that power line fell to route 29 in burtonsville. it got caught one a truck. thankfully no one was injured. the truck caused the power line to move. causing the power pole to snap. or bend at least. not snap entirely. the power crews able to shore up the power pole. route 29 got closed at 2:00 this afternoon. at the worst possible time for rush hour. it's been closed since. a mile or two in both directions to the north and the south. traffic on 29 obviously a major thoroughfare has been shut down completely. a major inconvenience during the rush hour. obviously a big inconvenience for the residents who want to get in and out
