this morning on "world news now." north korea fires back with a new threat. >> in response to president trump's warning of fire and fury, the north calls the comments a load of nonsense and vows to attack the u.s. territory of guam within days. >> some of the president's top aides were actually surprised by the language he used, leaving some to question if u.s. leaders are all on the same page as this conflict reaches a new level. we're covering all angles, this thursday morning. then the first hurricane of the season, franklin, is gaining strength and barrelling down on mexico, popular vacation spots as well. we'll have the accuweather forecast ahead. and finally, they've been able to capture all the

naval base in guam where concerns are growing after the north called president trump's warning a fire and fury nonsense. >> the north now says it will complete a plan to attack the waters near the u.s. territory before the month is out. we begin with abc's cecelia vega. >> reporter: a new threat from north korea coming in, saying they will be ready to attack the u.s. territory of guam by mid august. this comes as president trump's warning shot fired directly at pyongyang is sending shockwaves around the world. but abc news has learned that threat caught some in the president's own inner circle by surprise. the president in that statement using language not vetted or pre-approved by his national security team. >> north korea best not make anymore threats to the united states. they will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen. >> reporter: sources close to

doors with top aides, including new chief of staff general john kelly, president trump had discussed taking a tougher tone on pyongyang, but even members of his own national security team had no idea the president would go so far. >> he has been very threatening beyond a normal statement. and, as i said, they will be met with fire, fury and, frankly, power the likes of which this world has never seen before. thank you. >> reporter: within a few hours, north korea responding with its own warning, saying it is seriously considering a plan to target guam with missiles. the u.s. territory, home to crucial military bases and 160,000 americans is just 2,000 miles away. then rex tillerson sending a message of his own, landing in guam, offering very different words. >> i think americans should sleep well at night. >> reporter: the secretary of state striking a m

tone. >> what the president is doing is sending a strong message to north korea in language that kim jong un would understand. because he doesn't seem to understand diplomatic rang waj. >> reporter: then the president himself weighed in, tweeting, our nuclear arsenal is now far stronger and more powerful than ever before. hopefully, we will never have to use this power. but his initial words have sparked international reaction. from new zealand. >> i think the comments are not helpful in an environment that's very tense. >> reporter: to germany's foreign office, saying saber rattling won't help. cecelia vega, abc news, bedminster, new jersey. >> speaking of that seicsaber ra lot of people wondering if this administration has a unified message. >> he apparently caught his cabinet off guard, and that's sparking worries that the administration isn't working from the same playbook. our arlette saenz monitoring the

how this may conflict with the diplomatic efforts. what does this mean that he's not in touch with his cabinet on this message? >> there's been some slight and notable differences in that message. president trump struck a bellicose tone in his warning to north korea but others stopped short of using that same language, raising the question of whether the administration is on the same page. defense secretary mattis put north korea on notice in his own way, saying north korea must cease any consideration of actions that would lead to the end of its regime and the destruction of its people. but he also highlighted the diplomatic push. and while the president specifically warned north korea about making threats, mattis's statement focussed on the regime's actions. and you saw secretary of state rex tillerson using a bit of a softer tone saying the president was simply trying to speak in kim jong un's alanguage. but like many on the president's team, tillerson did not know the

of fire and fury. they did not speak until after the president's threats. he insists they are on the same page. a spokesperson at the state department says they are all singing from the same hymn book. >> they knew what the message would be, they just didn't know exactly those words. and so many people at this point are wondering about this whole back and forth. is this just words between trump and un? >> are we know that u.s. pacifi command is working on war planning and defense measures, but if north korea continues to make improvements in their nuclear program. if the tough sanctions do not work they will have to make a dee d decision on whether to make a preemptive strike. they could be facing that decision in the next six to 12 months. >> it does appear they are singing from

but different pages of that hymn book. arlette, thank you. the president is facing a lawsuit from that tweet announcing transgender people would be barred from serving in the military. >> they claim the ban violates their rights and is unconstitutional. the pentagon has not moved to enforce that ban. and now to new developments in the russia probe. we're learning of a predawn fbi raid at the home of former campaign chairman paul manafort. he was woken up two weeks ago by armed fbi agents executing a search warrant at his home in alexandria, virginia. manafort's spokesman confirmed the raid saying mr. manafort has consistently cooperated with law enforcement and other serious inquiries and did so on this occasion as

authorities have opened an investigation into the ambush that left six soldiers injured. a man deliberately slammed his bmw into soldiers and fled away. the attacker led police on a five-hour chase which ended when cops opened fire on that suspect. closer to home, hurricane franklin is gaining strength. >> the sixth named storm, franklin, has become the season's first official hurricane. category one, pack being wining 85 miles per hour. >> justin povick is tracking it for us. >> franklin making its second landfall early on this morning. we are looking at still some very, very gusty winds and the potential for extremely heavy rainfall. we have the concern here for damaging flooding along with mudslides, very gusty winds as

coast guard crews rushed to the waters 20 miles off-key west to rescue a navy pilot. the pilot was on a training mission when he crashed into the ocean. the coast guard spotted his emergency smoke signal. and we have new video of an encounter between las vegas police and a naked man outside a church. at one point he drops the gun and walks away but walks back toward

he was a few yards from the officer when he was shot in the shoulder. he's facing several charges, including indecent exposure. >> he was naked, had a gun and was outside a church. >> indecent exposure. >> all right. interesting. turning now to the courtroom drama in denver, taylor swift against a former radio deejay. >> swift appeared in court with a man she says groped mother. as her mother took the witness stand, we get the latest. >> reporter: swift was back in a denver courtroom for a third day, as seen in this sketch, facing a man she says groped her rear end at a concert three years ago. it's a legal he said/she said. she's counter suing alleging assault and battery. >> i don't think this case is going to be made or broken on the fact that she's taylor swift. some people are jealous of celebrities. it doesn't always help to be a celebrity in a

case. ♪ shake, shake, shake >> reporter: the epic showdown all began on june 2nd, 2013, when mueller, then the morning host at denver country station kygo took his girlfriend to a swift concert and a brief meet and greet before the show, posing for this photo later leaked to tmz, now key evidence. this photo is an unusual piece of evidence. usually sides are fighting about which sides they want the jury to look at. here both sides say it's a good picture. he says it shows i'm not lifting her skirt for example. but she says why would your hand be anywhere near my bottom. swift claims he intentionally reached under her skirt and groped with his hand an inappropriate bart part of her . he admits he gripped her rib cage and arm. she says i have

sure of anything in my life. and neither has taylor's mother andrea who testified when she saw that photo, i knew something horribly wrong was going on, dramatically singling out mueller in the courtroom. he sexually assaulted her, that guy. >> seeing her mom on the stand, it really makes you realize that taylor is just like any other girl. she has a mom who loves her and wants to protect her and only wants the best for her. >> reporter: andrea says team swift didn't report the incident to police because she didn't want did to define her daughter's life. you can understand why she might not want the publicity associated with making an allegation against a small-time radio disc jockey grabbing her on a photo lineup. on the stand, mueller took a grilling from swift's attorney about a secret recording he made with his bosses the day before he was fired. most of that two-hour file vanished, mueller claims when his cell phone was
