[ laughter ] >> you try to disprove it? we'll get to that. >> we will get to that. but we're going to start this half hour with president trump doubling down on north korea, declaring that his earlier threat to unleash fire and fury may not have been tough enough. >> and the president accused his predecessors of not doing enough to address north korea's nuclear threat. after the north laid out plans for a missile strike near guam, the president threatened the response the likes of which nobody has seen before, in his words. abc's cecelia vega reports from the president's vacation resort. >> reporter: president trump with a new warning for north korea if they follow through on that threat against guam. >> let's see what he does with guam. he does something in guam, it will be an event the

which nobody's seen before, what will happen in north korea. you will see. it's not a dare. it's a statement. has nothing to do with dare. that's a statement. he's not going to go around threatening guam and he's not going to threaten the united states. and he's not going to threaten japan. and he's not going to threaten south korea. no. that's not a dare. as you say. that is a statement of fact. >> reporter: the president delivering those tough words at his bedminster golf club and on the front steps of the clubhouse with the vice president by his side, he didn't hesitate to also take on pyongyang, calling his fire and fury statement nonsense. >> i don't think they mean that. and i think they, it's the first time they've heard it like they heard it. and frankly, the people that were questioning that statement, was it too tough? maybe it wasn't tough enough. they've been doing this to our country for a long time, for many years, and it's about time that somebody stuck up for the pe

the people of other countries, so, if anything, maybe that statement wasn't tough enough. >> reporter: he's not backing down. but he's also not telegraphing what comes next. as for a preemptive strike? >> we don't talk about that. i never do. >> reporter: as for negotiations? >> sure. we'll always consider negotiations, but -- >> reporter: this is president trump's real test over nuclear weapons, and in his first interview after the inauguration, the president told david he was confident he would do the right thing. >> let me ask you, right after the oath of office, they gave you the nuclear codes, the biscuit. >> right. >> how somber. >> somber. very somber. >> sobering moment? >> when they explained what it represents and the kind of destruction that you're talking about, it is a very sobering moment, yes, very, very scary in a sense. >> does it keep you up at night? >> no, but it's confidence that i'll do the right thing and the right

thing. >> reporter: in north korea marching in the street, the country rallying as it issued that threat to strike the u.s. territory of guam. the president lobbed one more shot before walking off. >> and i will tell you this. the north korea better get their act together, or they're going to be in trouble like few nations ever have been in trouble in this world. okay? >> reporter: and the president was also asked about his priorities in terms of north korea weapons. his response, quote, i would like to denuke the world and that nuclear is the greatest threat worldwide. he also said that when he took office among his first orders of business was to tell his generals to make sure that america's nuclear arsenal is quote, the biggest and finest in the world. cecelia vega, bridgewater, new jersey. >> it's not quite fire and fury from the defense secretary. his words more like diplomacy and military

>> the u.s. missile defense system is standing guard. and abc's arlette saenz is also standing guard for us, monitoring this. and we are keeping you busy. what's the latest on this? >> for the second time in the span of two days, the trump administration seems to be sending mixed messages when it comes to north korea. while the president says the message may not be tough enough, others have a more sober tone. mattis stressed it should be a diplomatic one. >> my portfolio, my mission, my responsibility is to have military options. should they be needed. however, right now secretary tillerson, ambassador haley, you can see the american effort is diplomatically led. it has diplomatic traction. it is gaining diplomatic results, and i want to stay right there, right now.

>> reporter: with his long-time experience in the military, mattis is also keenly aware of what a war with north korea would entail, and he warned it would be catastrophic. while the president doubled down on his threats to north korea, he did leave the door open to potential negotiations, but that message is really overshadowed by his aggressive rhetoric of the one of the people leading the diplomatic push is nikki haley. she'll be meeting with president trump at bedminster later today. >> besides googling where is guam, another popular search has been what sort of military capabilities do we have in guam? >> there's two u.s. military bases in guam, which makes it a key point for launching a potential strike. b-1 bombers practice there regularly. now u.s. officials are saying there hasn't been a visible escalation of military activities on the north korean or u.s. side, but there are several lines of defense. in south korea, they have patriot missiles they can fire at short-range missiles. u.s. navyhi

that can target longer-range missiles and the final line of defense is in guam, where they have the thaad anti-missile defense system. they can target a missile coming to the island. officials say if north korea were to launch a missile to guam it would take about 14 minutes to get there. >> they have a little bit of time to act. >> but there are a lot of risks associated with acting as well. >> exactly. >> if you miss, the repercussions are enormous. >> i think the repercussions all around are pretty rough. >> hopefully it never comes to that. arlette saenz, thank you. and now to the president's latest battle here at home. he's prodding mitch mcconnell to get back to work. >> the president sent that message to mcconnell by twitter first. and congress is in row secess f august. but the president wants another effort to repeal and replace obamacare in addition to tax reform. >> mitch, get to work and let's

they should have had this last one done. think lost by one vote, for a thing like that to happen is a disgrace, and frankly, it shouldn't have happened. >> the president was asked whether mcconnell should step down. he said if the senate leader doesn't get some of the economic measures done, then you can ask me that question. >> and the president also addressed the fbi raid on his former campaign chairman calling the move pretty tough stuff. the president says he was surprised by the raid but minimized their relationship, saying manafort ran his campaign for a very short period of time. manafort worked on trump's campaign from march till august of last year. a jetblue flight hiding to san diego was diverted to buffalo, new york after the pilot and two flight attendants became sick. emergency crews met them at the airport and took them to the hospital. some passengers reported a strong gas smell on board that plane. hours earlier, another jetblue
