president trump's comments a load of nonsense, saying the president is a guy bereft of reason and only absolute force can work on him. the increasing threatening rhetoric coming as analysts believe scientists in north korea can produce miniature nuclear warheads that can fit inside the icbm missiles that kim jong un launched twice last month. and president trump saying it's time to stand up to the rogue nation. >> let's see what he does with guam. he does something in guam, it will be an event the likes of which nobody's seen before, what will happen in north korea. >> reporter: emily row, abc news, washington. >> and the president's words are getting some mixed reaction at home and abroad. >> including a former u.s. president who is slamming his approach. abc's arlette saenz has been following the reaction. >> there's been everything on both sides. president trump claims that many other leaders are supporting the

facing tough words from one of his predecessors. former president jimmy carter. he's traveled to north korea as an official envoy several times and is criticizing the current president saying he's ratcheting up the already high-tension in the region, he warns the harsh rhetoric from each side has probably eliminated any chance of good-faith peace talks between the united states and north korea. another leader expressing concern about the president's language, the head of the united nations, a spokesman says he's troubled by the rhetoric coming from both sides. despite concerns about the president's rhetoric, allies in the region are ready to step in to help defend the u.s. malcolm turnbull says australia would come to the aid of the u.s. if north korea attacks guam. turnbull spoke about the threat yesterday. >> a lot of people wondering what's going to happen next in this situation. let's hope they spend the weekend and dial things down. >> i'm o

the president covered a lot of ground following his news conference in six months. he also shocked many in the u.s. foreign service about russia's expulsion of diplomats. the order was russia's reaction to new sanctions passed by congress and signed by the president as punishment for election meddling. when he was asked about it, the president offered gratitude instead of outrage. >> i'm very thankful that he let go of a large number of people, because now we have a smaller payroll. there's no real reason for them to go back. so i greatly appreciate the fact that they've been able to cut our payroll for the united states. we'll save a lot of money. >> the president offering gratitude once again to vladimir putin for letting go of those

employees from russia there. there was no immediate official reaction from the state department, but privately, diplomatic sources expressed anger and sadness over trump's remark. >> and the uncertainty over north korea was the main reason for a steep slide on wall street, according to experts. traders sent the markets down for a third day in a row. yesterday's selloff was the biggest in nearly three months. the nasdaq was the biggest -- worst loser. a detective in the penn state hazing case believes crucial video was released on purpose. testimony revealed some footage vanished two days after his death. prosecutors say the disappearance raises more questions. >> it makes us wonder what could have been on this tape that's worse than what was left behind. >> the hearing moves into its fifth day today. a judge is deciding whether there is enough evidence to send the case against the now-closed
