tornado warning that has been should. it goes until 6:30. 19 minutes to go. and this is the area that we are talking about, right over here to give you a little perspective. the capital beltway and the capitol over here. and that is where the tornado warning. i need to stress and this is a doppler radar-indicated tornado. if you are in the warrenton area, that is the potential for this storm to be located. prince william county, a relatively small area and looking at a severe thunderstorm warning that is on top of that. that goes until 7:00. and this is an expanded area these storms are moving towards the east. not very fast. just around 15 to 20 miles per hour and watch the storms evolve as we move through the next 20 minutes. i need to stress that

necessarily on the ground but doppler radar-indicated. due are on 66 and going west, the sky is getting dark. this is part of that cluster of thunderstorms that is moving closer and closer to the d.c. metro area. the thunderstorm warning, the tornado warning which is the more important of the two, that is for another 18 minutes for the counties. we have the pictures for you, on 66 looking towards the west. if we can go to that. it is blurry. but what we are looking at, the rodways are wet -- i'm sorry. highway 17. the traffic is still moving ok. but going to look for this to continue, the storm to move on off towards the east. go back to the radar and

to give you another perspective once you get past the temperatures. this is where the cell is located. large area of wet weather, the thunder and lightning. it moves on off towards the east. in the plains area, that is the strongest storm at this time and moves on off towards the east and not moving very fast, 15 miles per hour. warrenton, you are ok. this is now well to the north of you, around the marshalll area. a lot of thunder and lightning. this is doppler radar-indicated and nothing is confirmed on the ground at this time, but moving towards the east providing a lot of thunder and a lot of lightning and heavy, heavy rain and this will move towards the east as we go through the next half hour. once it does move out

move through the rest of this evening but keep a watchful eye to the sky. if you are in this area, now is the time you need to seek shelter and go to an area that has no windows. if you have an interior bathroom or closet, this is the time you need to go there or basement. in a mobile home community, go to your designated area, because this is moving very slowly, only 15 miles an hour. when radar picks up these echoes for the potential of rotation in the atmosphere, it doesn't mean it's on the ground. we are picking it up in the upper levels. this is a prolific weather maker as we have moved through the past hours or so. we have had numerous storm warnings. this is the first tornado warning that we have seen so far this evening. just to give you a little bit of

here is 66, the capitol beltway, the district and fairfax and montgomery county and loudoun county. this is the strongest where the storm is located, with the gusty winds and heaviest downpours. this warning goes on until 6:this evening. and severe thunderstorm warning that is going to expire at 7:00. you see the rotation. good news here, about a minute or two ago this was orange, there was more of a potential for development. and now it has gone down to yellow. and fingers crossed as the storm moves on off, we will look for improving conditions as we go through the next 20 minutes, half hour or so. anchor: we have a traffic camera to give a little bit of a different perspective because that is

towards the east. if you are in the warrenton, you are fine. in the plains area, you need to seek shelter. parts of prince william county until 7:00 this evening with the strongest of the storm that is going to move your way or overhead. gainesville, virginia, even though you are not under the tornado warning, here is gainesville, right here. even though it's not moving fast, you could be in the track of this storm as it moves overhead. let's give you some markers. beverly hill. broken hill, buckland, heymarket, along with gainesville from 6:30 to 6:35. so these storms aren't moving very fast and the areas that it's going to move over, not densely populated,

are a lot more people, that's where it is going to be moving ahead. tornado warning until 6:30. we are picking a little bit of rotation towards the back end of the severe tornado area. this is moving off towards the east. doppler radar-indicated tornadoes, it is just that. we have yet to receive confirmation of an actual tornado that has hit the ground. but judging by the pictures we have seen over the past 20 minutes, the road cameras, we are looking at gusty winds and heavy downpours. this area here, that is an area we are going to watch as we move through the next 15, 20 minutes. the notch beginning to move on in. this is the border between the tornado

90 to 100 miles an hour as we move through the next 15, 20 minutes. but isolated area off to the west of the d.c. metro and does not include arlington or alexandria. >> i have been looking at the storm here in the background and take you into closer locations to give an exact idea of where we are watching this. south of 66, you can see this formed on the right, this is lake manassas and robert trent jones golf club. starting to get closer towards gainesville, which would be very bad. in the last scan, looks like we may have seen this rotation kind of breaking up a little bit, which is good. heading wa

much more denser populated area. i have been watching the velocity and the radar shows you winds going away from the radar d those not showing a real distinct cuplet. you have those greens and reds, that gives you an idea that it is screaming away and potential for rotation. and broken up a little bit, which is a good sign. but still, very dangerous storm, winds in excess of 70 miles per hour which is possible. and large hail possible. zoom out a little bit more and give you an idea of the updated track locations and you can take over from here. e are showing rain all the way and that looks like, i want to show you a new warning tt

out. steve: new severe thunderstorm warning has been expanded and moves off towards the east. that is not the best of news. but the tornado warning set to expire in just about eight minutes and dallas mentioned that when these warnings are should, the national weather service, they shoe the -- issue it and when you see it right here, they may take up one or two echos for the tornado and then it's gone. it is in effect until 6:30 and brand new issued severe thunderstorm warning and this is prince william county. they expanded it farther towards the east than it was originally before. e potential of upwards of 70 mile-per-hour winds and hail. once again, our

this time is the tornado warning that is doppler radar-indicated and when we scop this out, we couldn't find any rotation out there. but that could have been the case as we move through and they just should this at 6:this evening. another seven minutes to go. and see whether or not the tornado warning will continue on. if you are under this storm, the gusty winds and heavy downpours and looking at hail and if you are in fauquier county or prince well yam county, you need to find a basement area or a closet or bathroom that doesn't have any windows. winds gusting at 80 miles an hour. it could cause damage. and want to stay away from the flying glass. in a mobile home, see

in your community area. anchors have a new camera to show us? i-66. in gainesville, it is even force in terms of visibility. not seeing the winds that we saw before. anchor: in the vicinity of 66 where so many people are commuting, a highly traveled area. and as steve mentioned, very densely populated as well. you never want to make light of this but take it very seriously and hopefully nothing will come of it but do what is best for your family. larry: people are driving slow. and just how serious the weather is in that area. steve: a lot of folks are taking the warning serious because they are not on the

-- roadways. they aren't terribly busy. i'm going to step out of the way here and show you an updated pinpoint in areas that will be affected. 6:28. if you know where the parkland school is. seven minutes from now, chester brook academy. gainesville at 6:30. and the power plant, where welington is, 6:47 and great indication where the national weather service has expanded the severe thunderstorm warning until 7:00. more than likely, we are going to look for this warning to expand the warning to go farther out as we go throw the nex

that is what we are focused on and 6:30 for fauquier prince william county. when we look at this under our scope, we really could not find significant rotation, at least nothing on the ground. look at this picture on the ground, 66. the rain is coming down heavier. a lot of lightning associated with this and small hail and the bad news with this storm, it's not moving ter apply fast, only 15 to 20 miles per hour. and likely to cause flash flooding. and we already have the flash flood warnings off to the west of us. but this is a slow-moving cell and riding 66. 66 is right this way. if you take 66 into town and the trajectory it's going to continue to move this way for the next 45 minutes or

if it holds together, will make it towards the d.c. metro area. i'm not saying it is going to be a severe thunderstorm by the time it moves to the metro area but going to have a bigger impact on arlington, alexandria and fairfax county. we are looking at a tornado he -- until 6:30 and this is a pretty strong and potent storm. you see the reds, this is the buckland area. this is where we are looking at the very strongest part of the storm. this tornado warning is set to expire in three minutes. whether or not it will continue on a little bit longer and it may, because it is holding together and 6:30 and second severe thunderstorm warning until:0

right here and this is the rotation we have seen over 66 and this is the watching we have been watching over the past half hour or so. we will look for things to improve. a fresh update at 27, heymarket, gainesville at 6:33. and bull run looking at the location affected by the storm at 6:30. if you are in this area, this impact area, the potential for the doppler radar indicated tornado, this is the time that you need to secretary shelter and an interior room and into a closet or a basement. i want to take this picture, and you can see how conditions have deteriorated with very, very heavy rain at this time. this is probably the core, the core of this system as it

on off towards the east and see the traffic and the car lights, can barely see them with the heavy, heavy downpours at this time. this is 66 and 15. if you are familiar with that area. so traffic is moving smoothly and flowing, but it is not very heavy at this time and this is the area that remains under the tornado warning for another minute. we are waiting to see if fresh new information is going to come in, whether or not they will continue the fornede if warning past the 6:30 hour. if they do not continuity, i need to stress, this cell moves on off towards the east because it is capable of producing the gusty winds and as noted rlier, it produced a doppler radar-indicated tornado. this is the area that we are watching right here that

the atmosphere and most severe weather. the potential for the most severe weather. we are quickly approaching the 6:30 mark. the warnings are computer rised and whether or not it will be going, that is in another five or eight seconds or so. and head it over to you. anchor: for areas of rotation and i can zoom it. see that area of red, that is the red. right along near hey market. so even if there is not a tornado, we do have the potential for damaging wind gusts in excess of 70 miles per our in this storm. this is a very strong storm
