>> ooh. and good morning, we begin with charlottesville, virginia, a city in mourning after this weekend's deadly violence. >> here's what we know right now. especially about james fields, a man charged with plowing his vehicle into ray crowd of people photographed earlier in the day marching with a white supremacy group. an army spokeswoman says he reported for basic training in august 2015 but was later released and fields is due in court today facing murder and other charges. >> the charlottesville woman killed in that crash was heather heyer who worked as a paralegal. the other vics were virginia state troopers who died when their helicopter crashed as they were looking to get to the scene. mourners have been gathered in charlottesville to remember those victims and to call for peace going forward. abc abc's emily rau

the latest. >> reporter: good morning. the city of charlottesville is still in a state of emergency. the streets though are quiet this morning after a night of vigils bolton here and across the country. the alleged driver behind the wheel of this car mowing down a crowd of people protesting against a white nationalists rally now charged with murder. [ chanting ] >> reporter: 20-year-old james fields drove from ohio to virginia for the really chanting a message of white supremacy. >> i thought it had something to do with trump. i mean, he had an african-american friend. >> fields' mother saying she didn't know about her son's view but a former teacher say they date back to his days in high school. >> he had this idea that whites were a dominant race. >> reporter: solidarity against those views from charlottesville to d.c. and cities across the country, people standing together against

[ chanting ] >> reporter: one counterprotester in the large group of mourners saying he saw 32-year-old heather heyer die. >> i saw the life pass from her eyes and i watched her die and from that moment on, i swore to myself that i would not stop in the fight against white supremacy. >> reporter: and the memorial you can see behind me here at the site of the car attack filled with flowers and candles and written in sidewalk chalk says heather heyer, a hero. we do expect to see the suspect in court today. diane and kendis. >> emily, we know the organizer tried to hold a news conference but that didn't go so well. what happened? >> that's right. jason kesser, the person who organized the rally tried to speak, hold a press conference and was basically heckled by an angry mob. people yelling at him. he had to be escorted out into the police station by the authorities. he did say a few things before he escaped the crowds blaming the police for wha

promised to hold a big press conference today but it's not on his official schedule as he faces growing criticism over his remarks following the deadly violence. >> demonstrators gathered at trump tower in new york and in other cities urging the president to denounce specifically the hate groups involved in the clashes. this morning the white house is confronting the backlash following president trump's response to the violence in charlottesville. >> we condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides, on many sides. >> reporter: now many critics are saying it wasn't strong enough and should have condemned specific groups. and president trump's allies are calling him out. >> i think clearly he should talk much more aggressively about it. >> call this white supremeicism, this white nationalism evil and let the country and world hear it. >> reporter: the white house tried to clarify, of course, that includes white supremacists,

all extremist groups. it was attributed to an unnamed representative but overnight in columbia vice president mike pence echoed those sentiments. >> we have no tolerance for hate and violence for white supremacist, neo-nazis or the kkk. >> reporter: the vice president also defended the president slamming the media's coverage of the criticism. >> i will say i take issue with the fact that many in the national media spend more time criticizing the president's words than they did criticizing those who perpetrated the violence to begin with. >> meanwhile, attorney general jeff sessions says he may consider a hate crime charge and said when actions happen like this they betray our core values and cannot be tolerated. we'll hear from sessions when he appears on "good morning america." anthony scaramucci is siding with those who say the president's remarks on charlottesville didn't go far enough. in his first tv

breaking overnight three men are dead after a shooting at a racetrack near milwaukee. the victims were standing near food vendors when a gunman approached and shot them point plank rank. several thousand were at the track at the time. it was eventually evacuated. now police are searching for the suspect but no word yet on a possible motive. also breaking overnight at least 18 people are dead after a terror attack at a restaurant in the west african country of behr keno fast so. they arrived after shots fired at a restaurant popular with tourists. witnesses say gunfire could be heard almost seven hours after that attack started. eight people were also injured. here at home a violent arrest that's gone viral on facebook has forced a police officer in ohio into paid administrative leave. it happened after the suspect violently revised arrest during a traffic stop. this is outside of cleveland. one of the o

you can see punching him in the head and even at one point slamming his head to the pavement. now, that video has now racked up some nearly 3 million views. an investigation is under way. amazon is making a solar eclipse-related recall. they are warning customers to send back unverified glasses that are meant for viewing the eclipse. the quality of those glasses has led to safety concerns. anyone who bought the affected glasses is supposed to receive an e-mail from amazon. the eclipse takes place next monday. spacex set to launch another batch of cargo and science experiments to the international space station this afternoon. one of those will involve a supercomputer from hewlett-packard. they're hoping to see whether a commercial computer can be designed to survive the harsh environment. the hope lives on for powerball dreamers. >> after no winning numbers were drawn, it has soared to an
