>> abc 7 has full coverage of this noon of the man who ran down the people in charlottesville. first, jeff, described to us what is going on there. to us what is going on there. jeff: the first appearance of james fields junior took place just a few hours ago. his appearance lasted only a few minutes. right after the courtroom appearance all the reporters walked outside and a dramatic scene unfolded here on the streets outside the order house. >> absolutely nothing to enforce a legal permit. we defended ourselves. white nationalists began yelling at the cameras, yelling and blaming the media and the city for the unrest that took place over the weekend.

city, and the police department for the death of heather heyer. the two men spoke for a few minutes yelling profanity. they had to be safely escorted away by members of the charlottesville police department. they were shouted down by counter protesters. meanwhile, james field junior made his first court appearance by videoconference. he is facing second-degree murder charges in the death of ofyear-old heather heyer charlottesville when he allegedly drove his vehicle into a group of people protesting the white nationalist rally. much, onlynot say yes, sir and no, sir when addressed by a judge. he is next going to get in touch with his attorney and then another bond hearing will be set for august 25. back here live outside the courthouse we heard from a lot of cou

expressing a lot of anger towards the city of charlottesville for granting a permit to the white nationalist to hold this unite the right rally over the weekend. we can expect to hear a lot of talk about that in the weeks to come in charlottesville. we will have continuing coverage of this court appearance on later editions of abc 7 news, but now we want to go to john gonzalez a few blocks away in charlottesville. john? john: jeff dealing with heated moments of the courthouse, but a few blocks away in charlottesville there was an outpouring of peace, love, and unity this afternoon. this is what the recovery process look like today here. hundreds came by over the last 48 hours, some of them returning after the saturday attack. it's those horrific images of that dodge charger, barreling down the narrow street, plowing in

this growing memorial, trying to overshadow the act of hatred and evil. you can see flowers, candles, pictures and messages written in chalk. 19 injured. 32-year-old heather heyer, killed. we spoke to a number of people. from the nurse who felt compelled to bring her toddler here to the cyclist to sat on the street here for 10 minutes and prayed. >> i want to be able to tell her when she's older what we saw, what we witnessed, what she grew up in. and i hope that something like this never happens in our town again. this is my neighborhood. i live down the street. i have a medical practice around the corner. i was here for the majority of the morning, saturday, but i left when the violence started. anyway, it's just a sad

moment for lots of people. particularly the family of this young lady, who as i understand bring somewn here to peace to the area. john: heather heyer lived and worked in charlottesville. a paralegal, very vocal about her convictions. she told that her mother told us that she is proud of her dollar that hopes that her death is a rallying cry for justice. while people gather here in downtown, charlottesville, many waiting to hear the words from president donald trump. and more on that from sam sweeney inside the newsroom. sam: the backlash towards the president is intensifying. ken frazier, the ceo of merck pharmaceuticals, resigning from the manufacturing counsel. the president tweeted that fraser will now have more time to lower ripoff drug prices.

another tragedy. suzanne kennedy has more on that part of the story for us. suzanne: the ntsb is investigating how one of two choppers responding to that white supremacist rally in charlottesville fell from the sky, killing the troopers on board. the trooper in the unit commander has been with the state police aviation team for nearly two decades. had just joined the unit last month and had died at the scene. eyewitnesses say the aircraft seemed to have mechanical problems. that the apparent pilot was trying to gain control of the craft. it honestly appeared to invert, turn upside down. loss of parts, seemed to fly off. it came down relatively quickly. both men served as the terry mcauliffe protection unit for three years. the governor calling the lost devastating for the commonwealth . at this point there is no reason

in southwest washington, suzanne kennedy, abc 7 news. as things unfold in charlottesville, stay with us for the very latest. right now the united states top military official is meeting with its counterpart in south korea to the alliance against pyongyang. chairman of the joint chiefs of staff is warning that the u.s. is ready to use the full range of its military capabilities to defend itself and its allies. afterwards it will travel to japan and china. china will now stop importing several goods from north korea under those u.s. sanctions. a huge step in further putting pressure in -- on north korea. beijing is north korea's biggest economic partner and source of aid. coming up on the abc 7 news at noon
