who wins that battle. as we say good morning on this tuesday we will start with protesters over hate groups and racially charged violence moving beyond the city of charlottesville. >> in north carolina, activists used a rope to tear down a confederate monument that had been standing in front of the old courthouse in durham, north carolina for more than a century. in new york city thousands of very loud but mostly peaceful demonstrators lined the streets outside trump tower on fifth avenue, manhattan, for the president's first overnight trip home since he took office. >> he tweeted feels good to be home after seven months but the white house is very special. there is no place like it and the u.s. is really my home. abc's emily rau joins us from washington with details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, diane and kendis. the pressure on president trump has been strong and growing the

to big-time ceos and finally the president condemning those hate groups. more than a thousand demonstrators lined the sidewalks around trump tower monday hours before president trump's expected arrival. another tumble dipping to 34%. the lowest point ever in a gallup poll and 61% of americans say they disapprove of the job the president is doing. that is also a new low for that poll. the survey was conducted during a three-day period that ended sunday as the president came under fire for his response for the incident there. the white house former communications director anthony scaramucci has some tough words for chief white house strategist steve bannon. in an appearance on late show with stephen colbert scaramucci called bannon a leaker and said if it were up to him he'd fire him. and he reiterated his criticism of president trump's initial statement on charlottesville. >> let's be fair to him today, though. he did condemn the nazis today. in two days later. does he order his spine on amazon prime? why did it take so long? >> i said yesterday and i maintain that he's got to be tougher on that stuff if he wants his legislative agenda to pass, he has

moderate direction and appeal to people that are independents and moderates that possibly voted for him to help him ascend to the pressey. >> what is going on? >> interesting back and forth. scaramucci, of course, who was in office for 11 days told colbert that the white house is a tough place with a lot of in-fighting but wouldn't have done anything differently. north korea appears to be walking back its threat to launch missiles near guam. kim jong-un paid a visit to his generals reportedly getting briefed on plans or the upcoming missile test. the country's state media is reporting that the leader is delaying that launch. but he says he will order the test if the u.s. continues its dangerous actions. joint chiefs chairman general joseph dunford said the u.s. wants a peaceful resolution but is ready to use the full range of the military if very volked. >> a closer look at your weather. the latest radar picture sho

than 400 miles off bermuda. gert's strengthened overnight into a category 2 hurricane. it's packing winds of at least 75 miles an hour and gert is expected to gain even more strength over the next 48 hours but it's not expected to make landfall. the current forecast shows gert tracking away from the east coast and out into the atlantic but the storm could cause rough surf and rip currents on the east coast. still ahead what federal and local officials are calling the biggest driving distraction of the century. and a man under arrest accused of trying to detonate a van filled with explosives in front of a u.s. bank. how investigators say they stopped him. plus, a fisherman reeling in his catch when a great white decides to compete with it. we'll show you the video of the close encounter next.

an eighth hole near pasco county. two homes destroyed when that first opened up july 14th. well, a sinkhole now stretches across 260 feet and it's 50 feet deep. turning overseas a girl is dead and 13 others injured after a driver slammed his car into the sidewalk of a cafe in a pizzeria near paris. authorities say the driver's actions were deliberate but not terror related. police say the driver may have been under the influence of drugs and possibly suicidal. he was immediately arrested. the same girl's brother

injured in the crash. and an ohio teacher and teacher's aide will miss this week's first day of school after dragging an autistic child down a hallway. the incident caught on camera in crestline involved a 7-year-old. it happened in may but school board members say the boy had become violent. the teachers though apparently didn't follow their training. still no criminal charges were filed. >> it took less than four hours for a jury to find a former radio deejay guilty of groping taylor swift during a preconcert photo-op. after a week-long trial that saw a defiant swift take the stand, jurors awarded swift what she was looking for, a symbolic $1 in damages. the jury also rejected david mueller's claims that swift's allegations cost him his job. well, july was a record setter for the tsa. agents screened more than 72 million passengers and crew last month. that shatters the record of nearly 70 million screenings in june. the 39t

new this morning. in the wake of the violence in charlottesville-- an upcoming alt-right rally at texas a and m, is canceled. university officials made the announcement late last night. a former student had been organizing the "white lives matter" rally, with help from alt-right co-founder richard spencer. texas a and m officials says the event threatened the safety of students, faculty, staff and the general public. a florida couple, learning a lesson the hard way... after their grill exploded in the back of their car! take a look -- this is what remains of that car. police say -- the
