this morning on "world news now." a powerful display of love, peace and unity in charlottesville, virginia, a sharp contrast from a weekend of deadly violence and hatred. hundreds of people coming together for a candlelight vigil, and we'll take you there. and the community gathers to pay tribute to the woman killed in that car attack. hear from heather heyer's parents. what they had to say to the people there and across the country. and new this hour, the flight crew sickened. >> jetblue crew members have fallen ill while on board for the third time in a week. and we've seen some pretty terrible ceremonial first pitches over the years, but we're going to show you one that just might take the cake. we'll see how this ended on this

thursday, august 17th. from abc news, this is "world news now." we begin this half hour with that impromptu candlelight vigil, joining hundreds of peaceful marchers days after protesters erupted in violence. >> the marchers held up candles on the uva campus while singing about peace and unity and observed a moment of silence for the three people killed over the weekend. word of the vigil spread by word of mouth. meanwhile, president trump is not backing down after blaming both sides for the violence. and vice president mike pence is standing by him. >> what happened in charlottesville was a tragedy. and the president has been clear on this tragedy, and so have i. >> rex tillerson has condemned the hate and violence but did not respond to questions about

president trump's latest remarks on the issue. >> and five members of the joints chiefs of staff individually denounced hatred, bigotry and extremism but gave no mention of the president's response. president trump is facing more fallout from the business community over his remarks equating the white supremacists in charlottesville with counter protests. he suspended two councils after eight kroech ceos resigned. many had criticized his statements. one panel had already decided to break up, and the other was considering doing the same. and the advisory upheaval didn't have an effect on wall street. it finished up green across the board. the dow rose 26 points. the s&p gained three points, the nasdaq added 12. mourners gathered to remember the charlottesville victim in an emotional memorial. heather heyer's mother challenged everyone to channel the energy into something

positive. here's abc's eva pilgrim. >> reporter: in charlottesville, a lean of people standing in solidarity with heather heyer, the 32 year old woman killed in that horrific car attack. >> no father should have to do this. >> reporter: from her father mark, a plea for peace. >> she wanted to put down hate. and for my part, we just need to stop all this stuff and just forgive each other. >> reporter: but from heather's mother susan, defiance. >> they tried to kill my child to shut her up. well, guess what? you just magnified her. [ applause ] thank you. >> reporter: then a call to action. >> say to yourself, what can i do to make a difference. and that's how you're going to make my child's death worth while. i'd rather have my child, but by golly, if i've got to give her up, we're going to make it count.

>> reporter: after, words of hope. is there a way to move on from this? >> i think the only thing we can do is reach out to people who think differently than us and realize that we're all humans. >> whose streets? our streets! >> reporter: but as charlottesville tries to heal, a new documentary from vice giving us a closer look at the hate-filled protests. hundreds of white nationalists marching through the university of virginia, torches in hand. >> blood and soil! >> reporter: vice spoke with one of those white nationalists, christoph christopher cantwell. his answer? chilling. >> our rivals are a bunch of stupid animals who do

attention. they just couldn't get out of the way of his car and some people got hurt. the amount of restraint that our people showed out there i think was astounding. >> reporter: but in charlottesville, heather's mother insists her daughter's death will have meaning and that her legacy only beginning. eva pilgrim, abc news, charlottesville, virginia. and baltimore's among the many cities across the country removing confederate monuments. the maryland city removed four memorials to avoid any conflict. the group had said it would take one down if the city didn't react. the mayor now wants to replace the monuments with markers explaining what was there and why they were removed. south korea's president is confident there will not be another war on the korean peninsula. moon jae-in says he would be willing to consider sending a special envoy to north korea for talks, but that country would have to stop its nuclear and missile tests first. moon also says president trump has agreed to seek south korea's consent before taking any action on north korea. and an american service member has been killed in eastern afghanistan during an operation against an isis affiliate. the person's name and military branch have not been released.

other americans and afghans were injured. ten american service members have died in afghanistan just this year. a massive search is under way for five crew members missing after their army chopper crashed in hawaii. the black hawk went down during a training exercise. tuesday night. rescue crews have found a piece of fuselage and a helmet in the debris field. several boats and helicopters are being used in the search. there's a mystery on board jetblue flights as more crew members are falling ill. it happened again as two flight attendants were overwhelmed by a smell on board a plane. here's david kerley with more. >> reporter: this jet, the third jetblue aircraft in a week in which crew members say they became sick. >> we're unsure what it is. >> reporter: two crew members on this boston to charleston flight taken to the hospital. jetblue says in this case, it

was nail polish remover that was the odor. but last thursday, two were diverted after a half-dozen crew members reported problems in the cabin. in one of those incidents, emergency crews in buffalo administered oxygen. a pilot and two flight attendants taken to the hospital. jet blue says they followed the manufacturer and faa guidelines in checking out the airline and both were returned to service. david kerley, abc news, reagan international airport. and now we have what may be the worst ceremonial first pitch in history. men, i want you to close your eyes for this. >> yes, so this happened before the boston/st. louis game in fenway park. that's a young man named jordan with the windup. he goes just a little bit outside. a little too close inside for that cameraman named tony. >> and someone grabbed a screen shot from tony's camera right before the moment of impact.

trailer crashing on a highway in the driver might have suffered some sort of medical episode before the crash. fortunately, other drivers helped him escape have the wreckage. the crash is still causing nightmares for commuters this morning. a whole portion of that highway is still closed. and across the pond. a manhunt is under way this morning for a gang of jewel thieves on motorcycles. >> they smashed their way in a luxury jewelry store, steps away from one of the busiest parts of the city, and the whole thing happened in broad daylight. james longman has the latest. >> reporter: london police searching for the mysterious thieves in this daring jewelry heist. this video capturing them pour out of the smoke-filled shop, six figures in black. still wearing their helmets, they jump onto their mopeds. making a speedy get away. one of the burglars used a sledge hammer to slam their way inside. and inside, another hammer discarded.

the thief the taking an unknown amount they've put the glass back on that shop now. this happened right in the middle of central london. we're around the corner from herrod's, in april 2015, the biggest heist in history, nearly $20 million was stolen from a safety-deposit box. by four elderly pensioners. there's no any indication with any robberies. no one was hurt. police haven't yet made any arrests but are appealing for witnesses. in london, james longman for abc news. >> this store is part of a chain. all around, they have five stores in london. it was featured in a whole documentary about this million-pound necklace that they have inside the store. >> and the store called boodles is a high-end store. >> it gives you an idea of the left of -- level of luxury we're talking about. >> but what's astounding is when it happens in brought daylight like this.
