now. i know that it took hours before a lot of people were allowed back into their homes or their hotels. i wonder, what was the sentiment there like then and what was it like this morning? >> caller: well, i can tell you guys that last night i spoke to a lot of people who waited for hours and hours to get back into their hotels, las ramblas has a lot of hotels in that surrounding area. a lot of apartments in that surrounding area. and they were stranded for hours while the police tried to figure out what was going on. thursday night, especially in a busy city like barcelona, it's usually very busy, very vibrant. and it was eerily quiet last night. there was almost nobody on the streets. >> yeah, quite a striking scene indeed there. las ramblas, you see it is the most popular avenue in all of spain. and it is usually very, very busy. some people

early morning hour, it's popular for spain. i know as those people were running away from the scene you ended up going toward the scene, as you got closer, as close as police were allowing you, what was the scene like? >> caller: it was very hectic. there were police and ambulance and fire trucks coming in from all different directions. police were desperately trying to get people to stay away from the scene. they were roping off large portions of the avenue. this plaza is very big. it spans almost three blocks. again, the amount of people who were there at the time of the attack, getting them out and up the street was very difficult, so it was very hectic down by the plaza as the police tried to get people to stay away, because it was still a pretty active situation. >> yeah, quite a challenge to secure an area like that. and now police have a different challenge, trying to piece together how all of this happened. abc's will gretzky weighing in for
