this morning on "world news now," terror in europe. police in spain have killed a group of suspects they say are connected to the deadly van-ramming attack in barcelona. we have the latest on the investigation and how the world is reacting. meanwhile, president trump losing more support with the head of fox slamming the president. the growing list of critics on both sides of the aisle. and new this half hour, the chilling surveillance video of a prison inmate's escape. >> he jumped two sheriff's deputy. killing one and wounding the other. how much time he now faces behind bars. and help us all, obi-wan kenobi.

the only hope for princess leia could be the next to get his own "star wars" movie. we have it ahead in "the skinny" on this august 18th. from abc news, this is "world news now." we say good morning on this friday. we're going to start with the breaking news from spain. following the deadly terror attack in that country's most famous street. >> attackers hit three cities. the worst was in barcelona after a van rammed into pedestrians. the driver has not been caught. >> an american is among the missing this morning. jared tucker from the bay area in california was with his wife. they separated moments before the van tore through the crowd there. >> and among those near the scene, there were three u.s. collegiate mens basketball teams, including players from oregon state university. no one on any of those teams were injured.

support for the victims. one world trade center in new york now lit in the colors of the spanish flag you see there. james longman takes us through a chaotic and deadly day. >> reporter: a trail of terror in the heart of barcelona. the dead and injured lining the streets, first responders racing to the scene. around 5:00 afternoon local time, police say this white van jumped onto a packed city sidewalk and began mowing down pedestrians, swerving side to side at what witnesses guessed was 50 miles per hour, that speed bringing chaos and carnage. >> i heard screams of people. and when i looked up, saw the white van just knocking people over at high speed. >> reporter: the van careening now this path in red for about 1800 feet before coming to a halt. >> we saw a lot of people just running, running down the

saw a bunch of people hunched over a body on the floor. >> reporter: about 13 killed and about 100 injured. crowds running in panic. fleeing this store. >> just come with me! >> reporter: parents holding their children tight. crowds streaming down main streets and back alleys. many hiding in cafes. >> some people were screaming and then everybody started to run. screaming from behind. and everyone just ran forward. >> reporter: shops and restaurants closed as heavily-armed police with guns drawn searched the streets, patting people down, then releasing them. you can make out clothes discarded on the sidewalk. this is right where that truck came plowing down the street. historic las ramblas. right in the center of barcelona, normally bustling with people, now totally shut down. police knocking this down. later announcing the arrest of two men, including driss oukabir.

who they say rented that white van. there are other people involved, and all evening we've been watching groups of civilians being escorted by police out of here. because police want to make sure there are no other terrorists lying in wait. james longman, abc news, barcelona. >> once again, the driver of that vehicle apparently escaped from that incident there. but there was another situation that took place about an hour south of barcelona that is now linked to the mayhem in spain's second-largest city. >> police killed five suspected terrorists. during a resort in the resort town of cambrils. authorities tracked down the attackers before a car slammed into a police vehicle before hitting pedestrians. six people were wounded including an officer, all five suspects were carrying bomb belts. >> and you saw there in james' story, mess have made two arrests. they have now confirmed the name of one of the two people detained. the 28-year-old, driss oukabir

was born in morocco. investigators say he rented the van used in the attack, however, they say he was not the driver. >> the barcelona tragedy matches the isis playbook from europe. vehicle attacks in nice, france and london. john cohen says these types of incidents won't be the last. >> as isis suffers more defeats in iraq and syria, we can only expect to see more attacks. >> and we're also learning a little bit more about the second suspect. he's said to be from a spanish city bordering morocco. the third was shot and killed by police. the driver of the van is still on the loose. isis has claimed responsibility for the barcelona attack, the terror group calling them soldiers of the islamic state. >> and the u.s. is offering condolences to spain, with president trump tweeting, the united states condemns the attack in barcelona spain and will do whatever we can to help.

you. secretary of state rex tillerson, vice president mike pence and first lady melania trump are also sending messages of support. flags have been lowered to half-staff in washington. >> so many people thinking about the people of spain this morning. president trump is facing more backlash for blaming both sides for violence during the white supremacist protest in charlottesville, virginia. last night, 20th century fox ceo, james murdoch slammed the president's response. an e-mail said there are no good nazis, terrorists. and he announced that he was personally donating $1 million to the antidefamation league. and earlier, the president abandoned plans to form an infrastructure council. that comes after he disbanded to business councils. as top executives appeared to jump ship. now more republicans are openly questioning the president's competence and his moral leadership. >> i think our president

to take stock of the role that he plays in our nation and, and move beyond himself. move way beyond himself. >> the voice of bob corker, once considered a vice presidential candidate. now the president still has not spoken to the family of heather heyer, but the white house says they're working on finding a convenient time for the phone call. the president remained out of the public eye yesterday. but on twitter, he said he was sad to see the removal, quote, of our beautiful statues and monument. and three organizations have pulled events from president trump's mar-a-lago club after his response. they included the american cancer society which cited its commitment to diversity as the motive for dropping its plans, the head of the palm beach chamber of commerce is predicting more charities will

huddle with his national security team. james mattis says they are close to reaching a new strategy for afghanistan. the new approach for afghanistan could involve deploying thousands of additional troops. vice president pence is cutting his latin-american trip short to attend. tropical storm harvey has formed in the caribbean but is not expected to hit the u.s. it's another of the three tropical systems forming in the atlantic. that is of greater concern to the u.s. the weather forecasting models show it could reach the southeastern u.s. by sometime next week. the next six to eight weeks are the heart of the hurricane season, these are the busiest times. we'll keep an eye out for those. also keep an eye out for the powerball numbers. the jackpot tomorrow night is $510 million. >> no problem there. but this woman here picked up a quick $1.6 million while waiting for her flight at the los

he reaches through the drive through window and grabs the cash register and the drawer and just kind of ran off. >> i don't think that's what they meant when they said "have it your way." also, aren't cash registers really heavy? >> seems like he knows what he's doing, though. he's still on the loose. we're also getting a first look of new video capturing the deadly prison escape in iowa. >> the prisoner jumped two sheriff's deputies, killed one of them and wounded the other. here's linzie janis. >> reporter: the newly-released surveillance video shows a convicted murderer lunging at an iowa share ever's deputy, stabbing him in the neck and face with a shank. the prisoner had unlocked his cuffs and shackles with a key he somehow obtained. now in a race with the second officer to get the gun in the van. he fatally shot deputy mark burr bridge and fired a bullet through the torso of the other.

the convicted killer then slams the van through the garage door. he car jacks a video before police chase him down. >> he will not breathe another breath of free air in his life. >> reporter: at his sentencing hearing, the escaped prisoner saying he didn't mean to kill officer burbridge. the officer's children devastated. >> he's a monster, a sociopath with know emotion. i'd go as far to say he's the devil. >> reporter: he pleaded guilty to 12 counts including murder and sentenced to life in prison. linzie janis, abc news, new york. >> life in prison without parole, he'll be there. and when we come back, the iconic "star wars" character who's set to get his own movie. and why justin theroux missed a chance to co-star on "friends." with his now wife.
