take a listen. >> when they arrived on scene, they were met by members of the family, who informed us that we had three juveniles under the age of 10 who were located in the residence. we have also learned that the cause of death in the situation was some type of trauma to the body. have learned it was some kind of grizzly method of death. this domestic group, they do not believe there was any threat to the community at large. >> stephen, thank you. >> steve bannon out of the white house. the rumors have been circulating for days and it is official, he is resigning.

as jeff goldberg reports the city's mayor is ready to see it come down. >> the charlottesville mayor had been in minority in the decision of whether or not to keep robert e. lee's statue here in emancipation park. gothe said that he wants it , saying that last weekend changed everything. in that statement released a few hours ago, he's making three proposals -- proposals calling for the removal of the lee statue and the stonewall jackson statue in justice park. he is asking the general assembly to allow for localities to decide what they want to do with confederacy statues. he is also asking locales to ban weapons at events where they might pose security threats. white nationals rally, many were openly

>> the statue of robert county is down for good in annapolis. the former chief justice defended slavery in the dred scott decision. we look at the busy night outside the maryland state house. >> this historic statue is history. it stood here for 150 years on the grounds of the statehouse. it has been reduced to a wooden box covering its stone base. crews doing their best to prevent the granite from being vandalized. our cameras were rolling during the wee hours of the morning, following

was being removed. they delicately hoisted the statue of roger tony onto the flat bed. it was a challenge for the train because of the large trees. it is the second roger tawney statue to come in maryland this week. tawney ruled7 that against scott. his ruling was upheld, denying rights for african-americans. >> we should not be memorializing people who rose up in arms against our country. i think it is a slap in the face to african-americans, and that is not right. that is not what we are supposed to be about. >> i am not glad to see any of the statues gone. they stood for a reason, they had a meeting. you cannot change that meaning. that is the past. >> governor larry hogan, who once defended this statue, had a change of heart after charlottesville.

>> welcome back, everybody. we're here in the weather center with steve. it is a storm watch 7 weather alert day. >> it is a busy afternoon and already starting to see it flare up out there. >> this is heading north on 270. skies are getting darker. traffic is moving fine. roadways are still dry. it's location, location, location. depending on where you are depends on whether you'll see the stronger storms. they are beginning to pop up. this is what is going on at this hour. severe thunderstorm watch for everyone including arlington, alexandria, the district, areas shaded in pink until 9:00 this evening. could see gusty winds, heavier downpours, and the storms will flare up as we head through the next hour or two. so once we get through

dramatically for us around the d.m.v. show you what is also going on, maybe looking at localized flash flooding. areas shaded in green including frederick county, the district, all of southern maryland, that extends until 2:00 tomorrow morning. so 2:00 am saturday this will eventually come down. i have a feeling parts if not all of this will come down well before then. show you live doppler radar from storm watch 7, a line of storms beginning to move through montgomery county all moving off toward the north and east at around 20-25 miles per hour. heaviest storm activity at this hour just over leesburg. if you're watching us right now, heavy rain, gusty wind. poolesville just on the edge of this moving on off toward the east. barnsville, you're also looking at heavier rain at this time. a little further to the south around fredericksburg and stafford, this is where you're looking at a stronger thunderstorm but nothing that is severe. getting ready to move across 95. a busy friday afternoo

rush hour commute. things will likely slow down there. as we head back up to the north again, this is what we see. sandy spring up toward lisbon. scattered showers and thunderstorms but not a tremendous amount of lightning at least not right now and no active, severe thunderstorm warnings. one more look just off toward the south and west of us, this is just to the north of culpepper. this is where we're looking a the a thunderstorm that's beginning to pop up with a little bit of hail. but once again, nothing that has been warned on. for tonight, once we get the storms on out of here, we will see warm and humid conditions. temperatures mid 60's to middle 70's. the warmer temperatures will be inside the beltway, coming up just a few minutes looking ahead to the rest of the weekend. the beach outlook and, of course, the eclipse forecast. don't want to miss that in just a few minutes. >> thank you very much. meanwhile, a crazy chain of events in fairfax county this morning. police are trying to figure out why a man with a pit bull tried to carjack someone. we'll go live to and anddale tonight. police just told you what happened before th

reporter: just within the last 10 minutes police identifying the suspect in this case, telling us it is 35-year-old kelly christopher robinson of triangle saying he is now facing charges. this after damage stretching for blocks here in annandale. take a look. you can see one of the damaged cars still sits in the parking lot and the damage continues as we look right outside this safeway. police used a stun gun before taking this man into custody in a busy shopping center after authorities say he rammed a dozen cars and tried to carjack a woman. police say the chaos on the road began along little river turnpike when the suspect allegedly plowed into half a dozen cars including jonathan green. >> as soon as i got in the right lane, there was an impact. i got hit really hard. >> witnesses tell abc 7 the suspect got out of his car, grabbed his pit bull,

the now debris-littered road, to this shopping center. that's where police say he tried to carjack that woman. then the manager of the bank of hope says the suspect walked into the bank and grabbed a security guard's keys. now in the security guard's car, police say the suspect damaged additional cars in the shopping center parking lot before a short standoff with police. now, you can see here outside of the safeway, we had crews working all day to get the brick down, away from where it was chipping away after the car ran into that area. we also learned from police within the last 10 minutes, now saying that suspect pulled a knife on that security guard. we have also learned that any of the injuries sustained from those drivers all said to be nonlife threatening. abc 7 news. >> crazy situation. thanks. look at this. this is a crash in aspen hill, maryland. s.u.v. and ambulance hitting each other about noon. this was at connecticut avenue

and a total of five people were hurt. we're told everybody should be ok. family and friends celebrating the life of one of two virginia state troopers killed in saturday's helicopter crash. >> as you can see by the large crowd here behind me there was a huge outpouring of love and support for virginia state trooper burt baits here in richmond. the funeral service happened here at st. paul's baptist church. the church was packed with family and friends but mostly law enforcement from as far away as california but of course right here in virginia as well. bates passed away saturday in the line of duty when his helicopter crashed outside charlottesville during the white nationalist rally that day. today bates was praise and honored by his colleagues as well as the governor of virginia whom he protected as a member of the executives protections unit. >> there are so many stories about burke bates. he was a character.

reporter: virginia state police pilot lieutenant cullen also died that day with bates in the crash. berke bates has been a member of the virginia state troopers since 2004. he had just transferred to their aviation unit last month. bates would have turned 41 sunday, the day after he passed away. and he is survived by his lovely wife, amanda, and his twin children. they are just 12 years old. richmond, i'm q mccray, abc 7 news. >> you can find comprehensive coverage of all of the events in charlottesville online, at our website wjla.com. another memorial vandalized. this time in chicago. and this is a bust of president abraham lincoln. it was wrapped in tar paper and set on fire. the statue has been part of that community for almost a hundred years. it is not the first time the bust has been targeted by vandals but it has never been set on fire. officials are now working to try to preserve it. jonathan: in the meantime it

jonathan: it is moving day at the university of virginia. the parents get to dump their kids off and, two, the kids never forget it either. alison: it is a point of pride and independence for their children. in charlottesville it carries a different meaning today. jonathan: especially after last weekend. we caught up with students and parents who like all of us have kept a close eye on what has been happening there. >> what do you want to take up to your room? reporter: move-in day is always filled with excitement and hope but this year at uva there is also a sense of anxiety. >> i was a little nervous for my son. >> that is how nicole durant of woodbridge felt watching the violence unfold in charlottesville last weekend knowing her son antonio would soon start his first year at uva. >> i think he'll be ok. they've assured me that they'll take care of him here. >> i feel pretty safe coming here now. >> uva is

4,000 new students and staff following a tumultuous week in charlottesville. last friday night, white nationalists carrying tiki torches marched through the historic lawn on campus, followed saturday by a rally that led to violence, including the death of 32-year-old heather heier. despite the unrest parents at the alderman road dorm say this week uva has reassured them students will be safe. >> i think the university is on point and doing a good job protecting the students moving in. >> we don't have any fears or problem with their coming here. >> that confidence got a boost on wednesday night after seeing thousands gather on that same historic lawn, many of them students for a peaceful, candlelight vigil offering messages of unity and inclusion. >> they are coming together. they are trying to move forward. >> we'll be able to stand for justice and definitely make our mark in a positive way. reporter: in a letter this week to the

those chicken soup books. jonathan: hum. new jersey isn't new to bridge scandals. it seems they have another one on their hands. this is crazy. a family says a draw bridge opened while they were on it. it happened back on august 1 on the middle of the thoroughfare bridge. the man's wife noticed the bridge was rising 3 to 6 feet in the air. tough to miss. he put the pedal to the metal to try to get to the other side. >> he accelerated and, of course, then we landed with a big impact on the other side on the concrete. >> the biggest impact i've ever felt in my life without a doubt. jonathan: look at him smiling. "dukes of hazard." like woo hoo! police reports said the bridge operator didn't notice the family's car because of a "strong sun glare." hate it when that happens. they put the blame now on the cape may county bridge commission who have yet to reach out to that family. i hope their car is not damaged. alison: my goodness. how scary. jonathan: kind

[laughter] all right. well, tomorrow is national aviation day. airports across the country hosting as geeks as airplane and flight lovers are affectionately called. they call themselves that. our very own sam sweeney was part of the celebration today at national airport. sam: it is a one of a kind day here on the eve of national aviation day with an unbelievable sneak peek behind the scenes. over here you have a u.s. coast guard helicopter about to take off. and then over here, you have one of the firefighter -- fire trucks here. then that you have the line maintenance facility. this is all part of national aviation day and the guy who set this up, this young man, 18 years old from potomac, has set up a program at 15 different airports around the world to make this happen. brian, this is happening from london to washington to new york. not many people do this. what has gotten into you? >> there's nothing like the

through the next few hours or so once we get the rain out of here. show you what's going on in terms of the severe thunderstorm watch remaining in effect until 9:00. only warning we have right now that is active is well north of baltimore, so that's well a ways away from here. no impact on us. flash flood watch remains in effect until 2:00 in the morning tomorrow. and the latest for you on the warnings, as mentioned, this is off to the north and east of us. no impact on the d.c. metro. but montgomery county now looking at heavier rains, also into loudoun county with some gusty winds. once again, nothing that is severe. elmer, looking at stronger storms right now along with poolesville with the heavier downpours. as we move toward berryville, barnsville, i should say, and off toward damascus is where we're looking at the wet weather at this time and then farther to the south of us around the stafford area, this is now just due north and east of you getting ready to move into quantico and then over into southern maryland and then we will see improving conditions as they move into the la

this week and stores are running out fast. you may still find some at walmart, home depot, lowe's, or toys r' us. they're going quickly. we found other options. if you can't find safe glasses for next week's event --. >> observatories, libraries, and museums are buzzing this week with eager eclipse gazers like ann and joel looking everywhere for eclipse glasses. >> we got two pair and then my sister wanted some and my daughter wanted some. reporter: that is the bad news. stores everywhere are running out of the official nasa glasses. dean regis, nationally known astronomer and host of the pbs "star gazers" has some ways to protect your eyes if you can't find nasa approved glasses for the eclipse. dean: take a box like this, put a hole in it. reporter: he says anyone can make a safe pin hole projector with a cardboard box. dean: let the light come through the hole on to the ground and watch the image on the ground. it should make a picture of the

reporter: a lot of people want to record the eclipse with their smartphone perhaps to post it on facebook. experts say pointing your phone at the sun for several minutes might not be the best idea. >> if you have your camera phone pointed at the sun for long periods of time, it could damage the electronics inside of it. reporter: nasa says it is ok to snap a quick photo or two of the eclipse but if you are shooting it for more than a few seconds put a darkening filter or eclipse glasses over your phone's camera to prevent any possible sun burn in. >> take the picture through the filter and it will help a lot. reporter: when it comes to a $500 phone dean says better safe than sorry. sunglasses, no matter how dark, will not protect your eyes from the sun. find a safer way to view the eclipse so your family stays safe and you don't waste your money. abc 7 news. >> tonight at 5:00, steve bannon is out. why the latest white house exit was weeks in the making. also --. >> fire personnel arrived on scene and
