here. we have some video taken earlier this morning about 7:30. that is when a family member came home and discovered these three little girls dead inside this home. at this time investigators are talking with a number of people either related to the family or who have some kind of connection to this household. this is what jennifer had to say earlier about the girls discovered inside this home dead this morning. >> they are all girls. they are all under the age of 10. they have trauma to the body. as i mentioned to you this morning. and that this is a homicide. stephen: as far as the three little girls under the age of 10, one possibly as young as just 6 years old. now, police stressing here that they are focused on this household. they do not believe that there is any kind of threat to the community at large. reporting live, stephen tschida, abc 7 news.

now to the big story from the white house president trump's chief strategist steve bannon is out. his sudden departure is the fourth major resignation in the trump administration in as many weeks. we're tracking the developing story now from the newsroom. nathan? >> bannon's allies rallying late this afternoon. the editor of steve bannon's former website breitbart tweeted o you the a simple message, # war. another one out of president trump's inner circle. white house chief strategist tells abc news he resigned effective monday, august 14, one year after he joined the campaign. but the white house saying bannon and chief of staff john kelly agreed today would be his final day. >> he's a good man. president trump: he is a good man. he is not a racist. i can tell you that. >> before joining forces with trump last august he was best known for running breitbart news, an inflammatory news site with a record for producing a number of racially charged headlines. >> i never sat down with steve bannon and said hey are you a white national

supremacist but i think the toll ration of it by steve bannon is inexcuseable. >> earlier this week in an interview with the american prospect bannon called the so-called alt right a fringe element and collection of clowns. many close to trump had privately been urging him to fire bannon in recent weeks. >> they've been tough on steve bannon. does he have to go? >> i think the president knows what he is going to do with steve bannon. >> which is what? >> i'll leave it up to the president. it's his decision. at the end of the day i think the president has a very good idea who the leakers are inside the white house. >> keeping track of resignations as they come in, press secretary sean spicer resigned first, then chief of staff reince priebus, anthony scaramucci resigned after 10 days on the job. now steve bannon. live in the newsroom, abc 7 news. alison: thank you. now we turn to new developments in charlottesville today and the statue. the statue of robert e. lee that has become the eye of the storm. six days after protests turned into a riot and a deadly attack

enough and he wants the statue gone. jeff goldberg reports that is just the beginning. jeff: charlottesville democratic mayor had opposed the removal of the robert e. lee statue from emancipation park but now he wants it gone along with the stonewall jackson statue which stands just a few blocks away in justice park. in a statement today the mayor saying last weekend changed everything. heather heier's memorial service was a profound turning point for me and many others. >> these statues are just a relic from jim crow and they don't reflect neither the history or the politics of charlottesville. >> i think it constitutes turmoil in the community and the nation. >> he wants the state general assembly to allow local governments to decide what to do with statues and believes localities should get permission from the state to ban weapons at events where they might pose a potential security threat. and finally, the mayor is calling fo

memorial for heather heyer in charlottesville, possibly incorporated into emancipation park. in fact, all week here at emancipation park we have seen the signs right under the statue of robert e. lee that read, "heather heyer park." >> i mostly don't have time to grief. i have a mission to accomplish. reporter: on good morning america heather heyer's mother saying the white house has tried contacting her but after watching president trump's press conference on tuesday --. president trump: you had a group on one side that was bad and you had a group on the other side that was also very violent. >> she is not interested. >> i'm not talking to the president now. i'm sorry. you can't wash this one away by shaking my hand and saying i'm sorry. reporter: in charlottesville, jeff goldberg, abc 7 news. alison: this is the scene in durham, north carolina late this afternoon. people, hundreds of them, rushing into the streets

protesting near the courthouse. in the crowds you could see here weapons including guns and axes. just days ago a mob ripped down a civil war memorial in that city. at this point while tensions are high, there are no reports of any injuries there. and another statue vandalized this time in chicago. a bust of president abraham lincoln was wrapped in tar paper and set on fire. that statue has been part of the community for almost a hundred years. it's not the first time the bust has been targeted by vandals. officials, though, are now working to try to preserve it. larry: new develop nments the terror attack in barcelona with one american confirmed dead. jared tucker from northern california was with his wife celebrating their first wedding anniversary and was killed when a van ran into pedestrians along a popular tourist area. we'll go to the abc 7 satellite center for the very latest now. >> more than a dozen others were also killed, over a hundred people injured in the

attacks that have taken place. a fourth person now has been arrested, but authorities do believe that the driver is still out there on the run. police say they killed five suspected terrorists during a hootout just last night. isis quickly claimed responsibility for the attack with the van and they say their soldiers were responsible for the attack. several american tourists were there when the van came speeding down the street, mowing down people going back and forth, left and right. >> i saw bodies flying in the air and i immediately said, calm down. you have to get out of here. you'll get killed. it was hundreds and hundreds of people. it was packed. reporter: remember, this was the height of tourist season in spain. authorities now say the victims were from 30 different countries. this is the deadliest terror attack in snain years. across

becoming all too frequent. larry? larry: ok, jonathan. thanks. alison: a man is in police custody after going on a stabbing rampage in finland. police there say the attacker stabbed eight people, killing two of them before police shot him in the leg. we don't know much about the attacker here except that he is being described as a young man with a foreign background. investigators believe he acted alone but they are searching for other possible attackers. larry: we have breaking news just into the newsroom here at abc 7. no more permits for demonstrations near the lee monuments in richmond. governor terry mcauliffe banning demonstrations there under executive order because whaff happened this past weekend. he is saying the suspension is needed to give state and local richmond leaders time to make "informed decisions on managing the new reality of the potential for civil unrest." one woman counterprotesting the rally in charlottesville saturday died and also two

forcing people to move out for more than a week. now fire officials say they found major safety issues there. we'll break down the problems and what comes next. reporter: those who call these condominiums home say it's falling apart. >> there is literally mold on the walls, holes in the ceiling, like you could see the sky. >> garbage basically, garbage. knock it down and renovate. reporter: the prince george's county office the fire marshal slapping the property with what officials are calling unsafe fire code violations. the fire and e.m.s. department release this had video from inside the hallways. >> the building is in disrepair. as you can see, yes. what you see on the outside is reflected on the inside as well. reporter: specifically the department says the fire alarm system needs to be working. all doors to vacant units need to be secured. trash and debris in those units

needs to be cleaned up and fire doors must work properly. if it doesn't happen by tuesday, residents will have to leave. >> short notice of people to make the situation --. reporter: the fire department says there are more than 200 condos here. of them, they say, about 36 are occupied. >> i don't know where we're going. that's crazy. reporter: the fire department says the property management is working to correct many of the issues. county social services will help residents with emergency shelter. a staff member at the lindhill condominiums declined comment but says the board of directors will have a press conference tomorrow. amy aubert, abc 7 news. larry: we are officially on panda cub watch at the national zoo. today the national zoo revealing it is partially closing the panda house to give the giant panda mei jong a little more peace and quiet. her behavior and hormone levels suggest she is pregnant but with pandas it is hard to be certain until a cub is actually

west of us. loudoun and fauquier county and frederick, in orange that would be a severe thunderstorm warning. it includes baltimore county, a little sliver of howard county, all of this moves on off toward the north and east. on top of that flash flood watch for the d.c. metro area and then where you see the red boxes over here around balk and off toward the north and east would abflash flood warning because of the heavier storms that are overhead right now. very widely scattered showers and thunderstorms around the d.m.v. take away the back shading for the severe thunderstorm watch and show you the heavier rains right now moving off toward the north and east. gaithersburg, 270. you'll find wet weather in your neighborhood. this right over here that was over damascus about 10 minutes ago is now beginning to fizzle out. good news this. heading down toward the south of us. that's where we're looking at another batch of showers and thunderstorms. if your a he watching us near

alison: overnight another reminder of slavery in america was taken down. crews removed a statue of former supreme court justice roger taney from the maryland state house in annapolis. he wrote the dread scott decision which denied citizenship to african-americans, reaffirmed slavery, and eventually set the stage for america's civil war. that removal comes amidst increasing calls to remove syol

across the nation. that includes statues, schools, even street signs. larry: we'll go live to arlington tonight the latest local city to join the growing debate. rich? richard: behind me is lee highway, named after robert e. lee. it's had the same name since 1919. now in the wake of the tragedy in charlottesville, arlington leaders are pushing for a name change. now it's not just here. the board of supervisors also wants a new name for the jefferson davis highway. the arlington school board changing its school naming olicy the very first step in the search for a new name for washington lee high school. now, the arlington board making these changes just as confederate statutes across the country including the roger taney memorial in annapolis are coming down. that taney statue removed from outside the maryland state house in annapolis to be put in storage. the 1857 case, taney, supreme court justice, ruled against dred scott, upholding

denying citizenship to anyone of african ancestry. the arlington board hopes to convince virginia lawmakers to pass a bill permitting the name change or giving the county the authority to do so. >> and i think it has come to be a divisive reality. not that we want to eliminate history. it is to be learned from and embraced at some level but where and how? richard: there are no guarantees this will happen. state lawmakers meet in january and february. they will be the deciders on this. coming up at 6:00, we will hear from a descendent of roger taney his thoughts about all the changes. reporting live in arlington, richard reeve, abc 7 news. larry: high tensions over all things civil war is prompting manassas to cancel a tradition. the city says it will not hold its annual civil war weekend this year. it was supposed to be next weekend coinciding with the 155th anniversary of the second battle of bull run. next at 5:00, the
