violence claiming kids on the streets of the city. it is the final countdown, just hours away from the total solar eclipse. where you can get glasses to view it safely. >> abc 7 news at 11:00 starts with breaking news. kimberly: that breaking news comes from singapore, 10 u.s. sailors missing, a massive search operation underway after the uss john mccain and an oil tanker collided. jeff goldberg is live in the satellite center. jeff: the situation is unfolding as we speak. we are just now getting our first look at the mccain. this photo from the royal malaysian navy shows a large hole above the waterline of the ship. helicopters and osprey aircraft and the singapore navy are looking for the 10 missing u.s. sailors.

with the much-larger ship around east of theime, streets of morocco as it was on its way to a routine visit to singapore. the navy says the mccain, whose homeport is in japan, is moving under its own power and headed to port as we speak. arizona senator john mccain said the ship's crew is in his prayers. no official word from the white house. the destroyer mccain is named after senator mccain's father and grandfather. jeff goldberg, abc 7 news. kimberly: this collision comes a little more than two months after the collision of the uss fitzgerald, colliding with a container ship, killing seven sailors. kick off for us, the moon moves in front of the sun, a few showers firing up, towards i-81 and towards baltimore. later in the afternoon, then we start to see more of the showers, thunderstorms firing up as well. that will bring our chance of rain to stick around as we head through the afternoon. in general, the better shot of seeing the eclipse or some of the shadows on the ground, or the solar glasses looking at the sun will be earlier. as we get close to 2:45, the peak time, a few more showers dot the area. kimberly: excitement is climbing as we count down the final hours until the total solar eclipse. if you are not hitting the road to see it away from home, there is one spot where you can camp out. theyl conner picks out amazing tips at the air and space museum today. cheryl: always

that you can enjoy this event safely as well. people will be coming here to the observatory at the air and space museum tomorrow. the museum opens at 10 a.m. starting at that time, they will be handing out the solar viewing glasses for free. they told me they have saved more than 20,000 glasses for tomorrow morning and will be handing out some of the afternoon. with these on you can look up and enjoy this rare event we will see tomorrow. they are not as bright as the sun, the state highway signs are lit up, warning drivers not to pull over of the highway for the solar eclipse. what will happen monday is considered one of the most magnificent natural experiences. >> i think we will see a sliver of light. cheryl: he is right, we turn to the extra enemy -- to the astronomy experts at the smithsonian. >> it

take a bite out of the sun. cheryl: in the d.c. area, we will have a partial eclipse with 82% coverage at exactly 2:42, b ut the sun will race across the nation in three hours time starting at 1:00. >> we have a dot of light coming through. cheryl: you can take an object and holes like a colander watch the circles change shape. they are safe ways to watch the sun if you do not have solar viewing glasses. >> we will try to plan this so we are in our car. cheryl: the air and space museum will be handing out thousands of glasses and will have telescopes. you want to snap a picture on your phone. you can use her glasses to protect the lens. >> make sure that you look at the smartphone screen and not the sun itself with your eyes.

uss mccain collided with a merchant ship in the waters near singapore. president trump will deliver his first formal primetime address to the nation tomorrow night at 9 p.m. from fort myer in arlington. the president is suspected to provide an update on the path forward for america's engagement in afghanistan and south asia. the president and his national security team at this weekend at camp david to discuss the u.s. strategy in afghanistan. we will have live coverage of the president's address on abc 7 and wjla.com. the president is back in the white house tonight after spending most of the past 17 days at his new jersey golf course. today, there was much focus on the president's response to the violence in charlottesville. andhy is he so confused unclear and unwilling to call out the violent white supremacists that was on such gruesome display in my home state? >>

students. mayor muriel bowser is promoting the importance of attendance at the newly renovated mary reed elementary school. the reminder to slow down if you see the flashing lights, watch out in school zones for kids on bike and foot. the school begins after what has been a violent and tragic several weeks for many young people across our city. as jeff goldberg reports, those fighting to stop the violence hope the start of a new school year means an increase in community involvement. scene tape hangs by the basketball court in southeast washington where eight-year-oldan boy was shot and wounded, caught in the crossfire while playing at the fort davis unity center. >> it was sad because there are a lot of kids out there. >>. i'm outraged jeff: rené thomas has lived here for seven years and says the violence keeps getting worse, young people shooting young people. >> they are

breaks at some point during the partial eclipse to check it out. just about wherever you are. a few people may be clouded over most of the time. the other big weather story will be the increased temperature and humidity, back to what it felt like towards the end of last week, thursday and friday. steamy, that is the type of temperature and feel heading into tomorrow. right now feels like 79 as the humidity has bounced up. satellite and radar, just a few isolated sprinkles popping up to the west. could see a few more moving our way overnight, but not looking for too much. , things morning, 7:30 looking good. right around 1 p.m., this all starts to kick off. 1:17 is when the moon first moves into the path of the sun, and that is the same time we get a few showers. the max eclipse

80% of the sun covered by the moon, but we are also dealing with rain towards baltimore and interstate 81. in the shower start to come together and work their way through. all of us have a decent shot of getting some rain, the timing is just the key, trying to hold off until about 4:00 for the a clips to end -- for the eclipse to end around the district. tomorrow, the big heat sticks around into tuesday. tuesday afternoon, may be a stray thunderstorm, but more than likely waiting until tuesday night and wednesday. more money, 72, 73 annapolis. not quite as cool and crisp of a start as today. d.c. back to school tomorrow, 74 at the bus stop in the morning. it will feel like 96 with the humidity from a big part of the story tomorrow. that number goes up even more into tuesday. another place to watch the eclipse,

the glasses. even if you take the sunglasses input a couple pairs together, a couple pairs together, you do not get the same effect. the special eclipse glasses out the solar rays. sunglasses will not cut it. this is a steamer basket. a pizza pan. all easy things to use. the big take away is it's not going to turn dark or be nighttime. this is so that you can look at the shadow of the sun. josh: exactly, on the ground. basically it will look like a crescent moon shape. just be aware of what's going on. kimberly: josh and his eclipse
