we can say good morning. hopefully, you have your glasses ready for the eclipse. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm lynda lopez. the search for american sailers after the second collision in two months between a navy destroyer and a commercial ship. you can see the damage. the sleeping quarters, we're told, among the places that were flooded with seawater. >> it happened overnight in the waters overnight near singapore. several sailors were air-lifted to the hospital. >> arlette sainz joins us from washington. >> reporter: good morning. ten u.s. sailors are missing and five injured at the "u.s.s. john s. mccain" collided with a vessel off the

singapore. the second incident in the summer where a u.s. destroyer has collided with a mer chant ship. >> to focus on the search and rescue effort. >> reporter: the search and rescue operation is under way for ten sailers missing after the "u. s.s. john mccain" collided with an oil tanker. the navy says the collision occurred as the guided missile destroyer was headed towards singapore for a routine port visit. after the collision, a gaping hole in the left side. five sailers sustained injuries. four were medically evacuated the for nonlife threateningening ris. this is the second navy destroyer to collide with a merchant vessel in the pa sif nick two months. >> it's hard to understand how we could have another -- another collision between two very sophisticated navy ships in this part of the world. >> reporter: back in june, seven sailors lost their lives when the "u

collided with a much larger cargo ship. last week, the commander officer and two others were released from their dutties. >> we now have two u.s. navy ships, very sophisticated, capable navy ships that are no longer in service in an area, in a time when the north korea threat is at its highest. >> reporter: the president was asked about the collision. >> that's too bad. that's too bad. >> reporter: he shared his concerns. thoughts and prayers are with our u.s. navy sailers aboard the "u.s.s. john mccain" senator john mccain is weighing in on twitter. he and his wife are keeping the sailors on board the "u.s.s. john mccain" in our prayers. >> the malaysian officials are joining them as well. president trump is poised to

afghanistan in a a primetime speech tonight. >> he'll speak from fort meyer in virginia. he'll lay out a plan. this is is 16 years after 9/11. secretary of defense favors a plan that would send nearly4,000 more u.s. troops to afghanistan. adding to the 8400 already there. >> very comfortable that -- that the strategic process was -- sufficiently rigorous. and -- did not go in with a preset condition in terms of what questions could be asked or what decisions would be made. >> secretary of defense there. it looks like the president will likely agree to add more u.s. troops. a top commander in afghanistan said we're with you and we'll stay with you.

and so far this morning, it is looking a little bit cloudy. we're hearing that the forecast is pretty good here for the last chance to see an eclipse in the u.s. until 2024. >> marci gonzalez, thank you. >> i think marci will be thankful when the sun comes out and it warms up there. 50 degrees in lincoln city. now for a look at your eclipse day weather. summer storms could affect your chances of seeing the total eclipse. the oregon coast may have low clouds at the start. as marci mentioned. there may be haze and smoke from western wildfires. conditions close to ideal in missouri and tennessee. there could be shoulders in the southeast by the time the eclipse gets there. hurricane kenneth will stay out

from north korea, as military drills between the u-s and south korea begin. the exercises come as north korea says it can target the u-s anytime with a quote "merciless strike". while such threats are typical before the annual exercise -- this year's drills are the first since north korea began testing intercontinental ballistic missiles. pyongyang's state media called the drills a reckless move that could trigger the "uncontrollable phase of a nuclear war." people are mourning the loss of a comedic icon.. jerry lewis. the actor, comedian, singer, and host of the muscular dystrophy telethon died yesterday at his home in las vegas. he was 91. lewis played zany but loveable characters in his films. he teamed up with dean martin.. and they became one of the most popular comedy teams in history. lewis also took up the fight against muscular dystrophy. he hosted an annual labor day telethon for four decades, raising more than a b
