mechanicsville looking for gusty wind and downpour in the neighborhood in five or ten minutes. heading toward the east. we have another severe thunderstorm warning. this is until 5:30. fauquier and stafford county. this is capable of gusty winds and heavier downpours and make its way east. remington is clearing out. good news on the way at least for your area. as we speak for the next half hour or 45 minutes. widen the view out again and show you the severe thunderstorm warnings. two are southern maryland. we will keep you updated on abc7. i want to give you an update, so we will stay on this for you. this just came in. tornado warning until 5:30. this is for charles and st. mary's county. i'll step out of the way here. let molly go in the computer and zoom in closer for you. 4:59, severe thunderstorm capable of producing a

indicated. capable of producing a tornado. 9 miles east of pope creek. moving at 10 miles per hour. there is the potential at this time. you are on the edge. this is the time that you need to seek shelter. go to interior location. the home, a basement, a bathroom. area that doesn't have windows. again this is moving toward the southeast at 10 miles per hour. capable of producing the tornado. but once again just doppler radar indicated at this time. we have severe thunderstorm warning until 5:30. charles and st. mary's county. tornado warning until 5:30 at charles and st. mary's county also but a different area where this is located. it heads farther down to the south and

leonardtown. woodbury. if you showed the beach at 50:05, and bull run at 5:14. so once again we are watching this area right here. southern maryland. charles county. this is the potential of doppler radar indicated tornado. once again no report of anything on the ground. what we have seen on the last couple weeks. maybe the last four weeks or so. the tornado not strong. ef-0 or ef1 but it's still causing damage. we will continue to watch this for you and show you what is going on here. step out of the way and show what is here with the severe thunderstorm warning. let molly take control one more time. move on through. this area is severe

if you are in leonard-up to this is the area we are watch -- leanardtown, this is the jared we're watching. this is moving south and east at 10 miles per hour. gusty winds, heavier downpours. this is the time to seek shelter and find interior location. if you are in the mobile home find your designated shelter area in your community. more than likely a community center. i want to give you an update here, the areas likely to be impacted by the area. coffee hill, 5:02. bushwood at 5:17. milestown at 5:19. clemens at 5:23. pull the view out. this is not the only area dealing with the stronger winds and the thunderstorms at this time. look for storms moving through the area. we have a

we will watch that. steve keep a close eye. check back with him. the big story the wait is over. all the hype, the buildup for just two minutes as the sun crossed -- the moon crossed over the sun for the first coast to coast total solar eclipse in 99 years. alison: some u.s. cities went dark. we had coverage on the eclipse that started in oregon. it swept across the country and down to south carolina. for those who didn't make it out of town, the air and space museum was the place to be. thousands waited on the special eclipse glasses and took part in the event. observation deck was packed for the partial eclipse that we had here. passing over the d.c. area. and down on the national mall, a lot of people stood in the august

by 2:15, it was half gone. 2:45 p.m. peak coverage in d.c. >> 82% coverage. >> yeah. it's incredibly cool. larry: we are breaking in the package from q mccray on the eclipse to get back to severe weather coverage. alison: go back to steve rudin. tell us again the area under the gun. steve: charles and st. mary's county, tornado warning. a lot going on in the evening hours. we had been watching the storm for the last half hour to 45 minutes. i was issued as a severe thunderstorm warning. that warning came down. a new warning was then posted. the tornado warning is posted. the tornado warning is over here and moving on and off to the south and east. not fast. just around 10 miles per hour. this shows the potential for rotation. this is a doppler

nothing reported on the ground. however, we have had doppler indicated tornadoes in the last few weeks and seen the damage they can do. they cause a lot of damage. even if only ef-0 or erf-1's, it's not strong. but capable of the gusty wind and the downpour. we'll show where we expect the storm to be. mat duction or beautiful run, this is where you look for the stronger storm around your area. bushwood at 5:17. we move in milestone, miles town, excuse me, 5:19. clements at 5:23. this is drifting south and east and it is capable to produce a doppler radar indicated tornado. what does it mean? the sophisticated equipment that we have at abc7 at the national weather service detected rotation in

moss -- in the atmosphere. this is what we are watching closely. there are two items going on in warned areas. severe thunderstorm warning until 5:30. the same area tornado warning until 5:30. what happens with the systems as they develop and as they progress over time, we are going to look for to weaken out a little bit. when we saw the doppler radar indicated tornado earlier on, it doesn't necessarily mean it's there now. however, this is the time to seek shelter. another 20 minutes to go. we have a tornado warning across southern maryland. you can see how it began to develop over the last hour or so. moving toward the east. just around 10 miles per hour. nothing around the immediate metro area. head farther south. we have another severe thunderstorm warning. this is for fauquier and prince william county. this is until 5:30.

county. this is 10 to 15 miles per hour. the thunderstorm is capable of producing gusty winds and thunder and lightning. and hail. this is the time that you need to be on the lookout. you are looking at the stronger storms. head back to southern maryland for you and give you another update as far as what we are expecting or what we are watching here. with the severe thunderstorm warning and the tornado warning as it moves across southern maryland. once again, i can't stress enough this is to lar radar indicated. this is what we have seen in the last four weeks or so. across the bay with the tornado that hit stevensville. they appear to have the rotation. the severe thunderstorm warning. the tornado warning. but again, nothing verified that has actually hit the ground. gusty winds, wind gusts. 60,

not out of the question. we're watching maddux at 5:13. tepico at 5:13. clement at 5:27. that is the guideline where we expect it to be located in the next 20 minutes or so and that is the duration of the tornado warning. now what will likely happen they will either continue the tornado warning as a severe thunderstorm warning past that. we will keep you updated as the storm continues to move off toward east. we head to molly real quick. molly? molly: we are watching the thunderstorms move across the d.c. area. you can see how much lightning is embedded in the storms indicated on the satellite and the radar. we have lightning and the winds. and the shading that is showing up on radar. this is th

bottom. that typically tells us it could have a possible tornado, that the storm could have rotation. we will bring you the latest as it comes in. the tornado warning until 5:30. if you are in this immediate area you want to move to the safe spot. the interior of your home. away from windows. we are not getting confirmation of the tornado on the ground but it's possible. the shading indicating the heavy rain. another key factor is that this is only moving at 10 miles per hour. that is very, very slow. so this could bring with it flash flooding. if you are in the immediate area of mechanicsville south to milestown, that is the area we are most concerned about. we will be watching very, very closely. it does appear that the storm is starting to just weaken ever so slightly. we will send it to steve with the details on that. >> you mentioned that the storm is not

this is moving 10 to 15 miles per hour. there is also the potential of the localized flooding. we have potential of the tornado across southern maryland. this is on top of a severe thunderstorm warning in effect until 5:30. though it is set to expire at 5:30 it doesn't mean we're out of the woods necessarily. we are getting the markers here with if early rotation that we see potential of the tornado activity. i need to stress we don't have any report of anything on the ground. but that

you need to pay attention if you see more lightning. it means it's powerful. this is the area we see at this time. if you live in chapico, this is when you need to seek shelter or get a weather radio. turn the tv on loudly. go to interior room, closet, bathroom or an area with no windows. make sure that the pits are indoors and secure. we'll keep updieted as this is moving east. there is a thunderstorm in effect until 5:30. prince william, stafford and fauquier county. there is a lot of hail and thunder and lightning but we are not looking at a tornadoes warning with the sys

that is the good news. let's head east to give you update on what is going on in terms of the warning across maryland. the doppler radar indicated tornado. nothing reported on the ground. we have report of early rotation and the higher elevation of the atmosphere. in storm had cloud top of 50,000 to 60,000 feet. if you compare it and you are in an area. airplanes are cruising around 35 to 40,000 feet. bull run at 5:16. hurry at 5:19. 5:28 in clement. society hill is 5:41.

this tornado warning set to expire at 5:30. but more than likely if you continue to see the rotation of the atmosphere. the upper level of the atmosphere. they will continue this warning. chapico, this is the area to watch out for now. the heaviest rain is not over the area right now. interior room into a bedroom. closet. bathroom. lower level of the home. i will step out and give you an update. clements at 5:28. 5:35 at st. clements shore. leonardtown is a ways off at 5:44, this is the time to make the plans to seek the shelter.

if this continues a track south and east at 10 miles per hour, not fast. it takes time to get there. we have a tornado warning until 5:30. st. mary's county. severe thunderstorm warning that is until 5:30 for charles and st. mary's county. we have two or three active warnings at the time. severe thunderstorm warning at fauquier. prince william and stafford. this is moving east. impact 95, dumbfries area. moving north of stafford. people are coming back from the eclipse and the traffic is beginning to build and increase. this is an area off west of 95 as this is moving toward the east. not fast.

there is not a lot going on. not inside the beltway. it's fine for springfield and chevy chase and college park. this does remain in effect until 5:30. this is shaved off and changed the shape a little bit. this is the area to stay alert. this is the area we are going to continue to watch moving through the next 20 minutes or so. bushwood at 5:29. st. clements shores at 5:31. leonard-up to at 5:45 -- leonardtown at 5:45. give me an update on the side picture.

molly has an update. >> we are watching them develop, and a wider picture first. you can see that much of the d.c. metro in the clear right now. it's mainly south of the i-95 corridor. we are watching gusty storms. we have a tornado warning in effect until 5:30. that does include st. mary's county. it does appear like the storm is starting to weaken ever so slightly. notice where we see darker shades of red. and the lightning embedded in the thunderstorm. in addition we have a severe thunderstorm warning until 5:30 for st. mary's and charles county. off to the west for prince william, stafford and fauquier county. we have a severe thunderstorm warning until 5:30. we see this happening and that is what we look for, in the flash flooding in the

the storms are moving 10 miles per hour and going nowhere fast. we are about to enter to interstate 95 from dumbfries south to stafford. heads up for you starting the commute home from work. there are heavy downpours and this is severe thunderstorm warning. this is packing a punch. 60-mile-per-hour wind gust is possible. lightning and in addition the heavier downpours. again head farther off east. where we have a tornado warning still in effect. to milestown and farther south and east. that is the area of concern. steve: i want to give you an update. 3:01.

this storm is not moving across the area this is north and east of you moving off at 10 miles per hour. this is three different warnings. this is a tornado warning in st. mary's county. nine minutes to go. this storm is just reported. i should say doppler radar indicated tornado at this time. nothing has been confirmed on the ground. but please keep in mind the last few storms we have had around the metro area, around the area i should say. even across the bay, they have always come in as the doppler radar indicated tornadoes. we see the damage it can cause. cars flipped over and tree and house damage so the storms need to be watched closely. the severe thunderstorm

warning. mechanicsville is an area that needs to be alert now in the strongest storm. the gustiest winds. there were cloud tops that ranged 50,000 to 60,000 feet. as i said earlier a blane where you take off. this is going to continue to move east at 5 miles per hour. not fast and prolific lightning makers. this is a healthy storm and it's healthy up draft and downdraft and causes the rotation in the atmosphere. so this is in effect until 5:30. eight minutes more to go. this storm is capable to produce tornado. nothing on

i want to show you something here that is better news. remember three or four minutes ago we had an early rotation. you can see it when we go through the progress as this moves through. if we put this on the latest loop and pause it, the rotation has started to settle down. instead of seeing multiple markers like this, we only see one at this time. i need to stress that because it's orange and not yellow, there is a greater probability that it may have made contact with the ground. it's officially a tornado if it makes contact with the ground. if it doesn't it's a funnel cloud. we have doppler radar indicated rotation in the storm. that led to the severe thunderstorm warning and the tornado warning to be posted at the national weather service. they post the warnings for us. we carry them for you. st. mary's county until 5:30. we are almost at 5:24. six mo

i wouldn't be surprised if they continue the tornado warning. maybe longer until 6:00. as this moves off to the east. here is another severe thunderstorm warning. this is for fauquier and stafford. good news, they have now cut prince william out of the equation on this. so things are beginning to improve a little bit. however, if you are under the storms. if you are under the area that has seen the heaviest downpours, gustiest winds you are seeing it hard now. it won't last much longer. depending on the location. this is what you are looking at. around the beltway to the metro. arlington, alexandria, the district. montgomery county. no problems at all. this is south of d.c. gaithersburg, you are fine at this hour. no impact on the rush hour commute. heading back down to southern maryland. we still have the tornado warning. st. mary's until 5:30 and severe thunderstorm warning for charles and st. mary's county. so the

things are clearing up a little bit. strongest storm that is moving on off. this is another update that just came in. we talk about the training with the storms. they don't move fast at 5 to 10 miles per hour. a lot of rain is falling. now we have a flash flood warning until 8:30 for st. charles county. it will likely cancel out earlier than that. but the rain is coming down so fast. it's wet around here for the past, pretty wet this month. it will continue. let's get update on the power outages and we head to brianne carter. brianne: all right, steve. down at the "live desk" we are following any developments from what you are seeing there. give you an update of what we learned so far from the charles county fire. at this point, there are reports of multiple trees down in the area th

county. no injuries reported as a result of that. the majority may be in la plata. that is not confirmed at this point. again, the charles county fire that is telling us they have report of the multiple trees down in area there. no injuries at this point. we will monitor what is going on, on the ground. steve: this is what i talk about earlier with how tall the storms are. this is 40,000, 50,000 feet. follow it across. this is 55,000 feet. this is powerful. we have a tornado warning in effect. pressure information for us here. the flash flood warning. st. mary's county and charles county. 5:23. doppler radar indicated thunderstorm with the heavy rain across the area. we have been talking a

all along for the past half hour. the flash flood warning in effect until 8:30. there is a lot going on. we have three active warnings over one area. one main area of the southern maryland. flash flood warning until 8:30. tornado warning for 5:30. three minutes to go with the severe thunderstorm warning and tornado warning. he's interesting to see. it will be interesting to see if they can continue the tornado warning and the severe thunderstorm warning past 5:30. i strongly suspect the severe thunderstorm warning will continue on past 5:30. we have to deal with the tornado warning that is in effect. it's for another three minutes and brianne carter mentioned that the storm has a history in charles county producing the gusty winds strong enough to topple trees.

time. it was beginning to improve as the progression moving through the last couple of hours. we had the markers with the rotation. it has eased quite a bit. it slowly drifts. i stress drifts at 5 or 10 miles per hour. that is just not very fast at all. bushwood at 5:27. milestown at 5:31. st. clements shores at 5:30. 5:47 is over society hill. drum point this is just east of you. this will move your way. we are approaching 5:30.

have had a tornado touching the ground. but we have report of the trees down and the minor damage at this point. there may have even been straight line winds to cause the damage. we are approaching expiration time for warning at 5:30 of charles and st. mary's county. tornado warning until 5:30 for st. mary's county. capable of producing the tornado. what happens when they issue the warning, something is happening at that point. so this warning was issued now 20, 25 minutes ago. more than likely that tomorrow has eased or looking at where the rotation was located, it's moved away and likely dissipated. we don't have the active markers in the tornado warning in

county. it's set to come down in another 15 seconds. i believe we might have the flash flood warning. it's also a tornado warning. don't confuse the red boxes we see across the area at this time. this is active warning for fauquier and stafford but comes down in ten seconds or so. yep. they just, you can see it's blinking a little bit. this is a in warning -- this is a new warning. two new severe thunderstorm warnings that both expire at 6:15. this good news where we had the warning earlier is canceled out. it's been reissued.

rolling to carbondale, illinois, at the start of the solar eclipse. a lot of people looking down on the ground, though, ooze well. the sun is casting the crescent moon shadows. this is the view from outer space. you can see the shadow of the moon on the united states from space. it was incredible images. larry: thank you for that. you know, oregon was the first to go dark when the solar eclipse started. charleston, south carolina, was the last u.s. place to see it. brianne carter at the "live desk" with more excitement at the eclipse swept coast toest co. brianne: some folks describe it as the most amazing sight ever. others were brought to tears as the first full blown solar eclipse in a century to sweep the u.s. happened. we got a chance to see the change in the daylight here. nothing like what folks in path of poe tallty saw. drop of temperature coast to coast in a matter of minutes. this is all in places like oregon

tonight the president will address the nation about the war in afghanistan. we take a look at what could be next after 16 years. >> after a series of high-level talks for the national security team, president trump will unveil the new strategy for the longest war in afghanistan. president trump: this is a big decision for me. i took over a mess. we will make it less messy. >> defense secretary james mattis mum on the details traveling overseas. >> the president has made a decision as he said. he wants to be the one to announce it to the american people. >> in june, secretary mattis made this admission to a senate committee. >> we are not winning in afghanistan right now. >> james phillips, middle eastern fellow at the heritage foundation says he wants to see a plan that deals with pakistan. he believes that country is a destabilizing factor providing the safe havens for

terrorists. >> afghanistan is a canary in the coal mine. if the islamic extremists take over afghanistan they are much more likely to follow suit in pakistan. ands even part of india. >> the afghan government controls less than 60% of the country. according to a u.s. watchdog agency. phillip adds it's important to deprive al-qaeda, isis and taliban use of a base and the u.s. needs to strengthen the afghan government and help them fight terror groups. he gave mattis the authority to send 4,000 more in june but mattis declined to alter troop levels until there is a broader strategy. there are act 5,000 nato troops supporting t

larry: unwelcome noise for students in d.c. this morning. alarm clocks. the first day of school in the district. sam ford takes us back to school. sam: across the city today they were back in classrooms. all the dcps students are back. making up 57% of all public school students and some of the chapters that make up 43%. among them the students at center city public charter schools. >> i'm kind of happy to see all my friends again. >> you think the first day back at school. going well. boring but well. sam: they made a show of it. >> students, ready to go to school? >> yes! >> we are ready to have you.

part of the area but we are not in the clear from the storms yet. jonathan: we begin in the storm watch with meteorologist steve rudin. steve: strong storms. three active thunderstorm warning in culpeper, fauquier and stafford until 6:15. the second one where the tornado warning was original larning. tornado until 6:15. so 15 more minutes to go. a third severe thunderstorm warning to the north of annapolis across the bay bridge. this is where they had the tornado a few weeks ago where they have a second severe thunderstorm warning at this time. this evening it will settle down. we are going to continue the track the storms for you. we have a full look at the rest of the work at the upcoming weeke.
