there are about 200 units here. 37 of them were still occupied. the estimate was about 100 people. this is not a happy place at this hour. you can see some people down there on the front porch. they are trying to figure out what to do. i talked to one lady. she is upset. she is getting put up in a hotel, but they won't let her ring her pet -- bring her pet. some people are loading up and getting out. they say they don't have any other place to go. you hear the sound, the rat attacked -- rat-a-tat-tat. that is the fence crew driving in posts for the chain-link fence being installed at this hour. a lot of residents say they knew this was coming, but it's still not easy. >> it's very disheartening, especially when you have paid your rent for a certain amount of time, then you find the utilities aren't paid. you're sitting out in the parking lot, knowing you have to move completely. it's just disheartening. brad:

temperatures get to take a little bit of a break for us, too. 79 degrees at the belle haven country club. cloud cover will stick around for a lot of the day. let me show you some of our big headlines. the nice thing is we are going to watch the humidity start to fall as we work our way throughout the day. that sets us up for a really ofe and of the week -- end the week. feeling fall like throughout the next few days. down here at the national harbor, around 80 degrees, cloudy skies. with these clowns, we could see a few light showers -- clouds, we could see a few light showers. we are not looking for too much around d.c., but there is a slim chance. some breaks in the cloud cover farther north. the rain is working its way towards fredericksburg. in general, a relatively dry day. the latest futurecast has most of that looking pretty good as we go throughout the afternoon.

we will talk more about that coming up in about 10 minutes. melanie: developing now, a crime alert in arlington. received a police call about someone being shot around 7:00 this morning. the gunman has not been caught and may have left the area. the victim was taken to the hospital, where he is expected to survive. authorities believe the suspect and the victim knew each other. dozens of people are out of their homes right now after a massive apartment fire in hagerstown. officials think they know what started it. more now from john gonzalez. john: this was a massive fire at a very large apartment building here in hagerstown. today, firefighters had to come back. even the chief coming back because of hotspots flaring up, flames rekindling. it was a restoration crew early this morning that was out here boarding up windows and doors when they noticed new flames. you can see there is still activity at this hour. all

evacuated from the apartments. the entire roof is gone. it collapsed. you can see the size of these claims. they were seen for miles away -- of these flames. they were seen for miles away. it took about 90 minutes to get the fire under control. the fire chief, again, here at the scene, tells us this was most likely caused by a lightning strike. >> internet went out. then a few seconds or minutes later, alarm goes off. then when i stepped out of the corridors, the hallways were covered in smoke. >> flames probably three to four times as tall as the building shooting up in the sky. out through here, there were the people who live here, watching their worldly possessions go up in smoke. john: fortunately,

here is a check on your traffic. >> good afternoon. it's going to be a bit of a tough ride in a couple spots today. overall, it's not too bad. 66, eastbound ramp to the outer loop of the capital beltway. the right lane is blocked with some road work. that's going to add to a bit of volume on the eastbound ride. take a look at that volume is down on 66 at the gallows road overpass. traffic is moving. it's a lot of volume in all four lanes at the moment. going the opposite way, the westbound ride on 66 through vienna, occasional backups, more of a typical slow down as you head out from the beltway towards route 123. 95 in virginia, some northbound volume here at the overpass just below fairfax county parkway. expect a bit of a slowdown. that will go into

melanie: right now hong kong is basically shut down due to a category 10 typhoon. the asian financial capital suspended trading. dozens have been injured. at least three are dead. roads are flooded. trees are downed. waves continue to crash into the streets. more than 400 50 flights have been canceled. a category 10 is the strongest storm. we will update you further as that develops.

that shook our area. the 5.8 negative quake was centered in louisa county, virginia. it caused extensive damage to the washington monument and the national cathedral. today some carvings will be on display in the cathedral central area. they were on pinnacles that are still being repaired. a shooting mystery in prince george's county. last night, a man walked into the bladensburg police station after being shot. police believe the shooting took nearby -- took place nearby, not far from the bladensburg high school. the victim is at the hospital, in critical condition. so far, no arrests have been made. happening now, d.c. mayor muriel bowser is highlighting her investments in charter schools across the district. she is at a campus right now to discuss education reform. she is also talking about the importance of attending school every day. of every fourut students misses 10% or more of the school yea

has moved into her new pad at harvard university. the 19-year-old graduated high school last year. she chose to take a gap year off before starting college. during that year, she did an internship. she also went to the sundance film festival and traveled with her family in the summer months. that's a great idea, having that extra year off to figure out what you want to do, explore. josh: a much better idea by the time you get to school of what might be available. for back-to-school tomorrow, things don't get much better than the forecast for these kids in loudoun county. it feels a little bit more like fall. to be goingiate back to school. cloudy skies for a lot of us today. we will slowly clear out later on. 80 degrees for you right now at reagan national. the breeze -- that's our sign that things are trending in the right direction. the wind is out of the north.

drier air. already happening in frederick county. clear skies taking over. not so much for d.c. temperatures in fredericksburg right around 76, where we do have a few showers showing up. this time of year, this is nice. five degrees cooler in d.c., 11 degrees cooler than this time yesterday in hagerstown, and about 10 degrees cooler in manassas. a big change from that kind of steamy day we had yesterday. here are the showers we are talking about in fredericksburg, very light, predominantly staying to the south end of town as we go throughout the day. a little bit of a heavy downpour, but that's about it. there is a chance we could see a few of those showers around the seat, but more likely farther but morearound d.c., likely farther south. we set up for a nice evening. clear skies and lower humidity make for an rate -- a great night around town.
