jonathan: the governor declared a state of disaster for 30 counties. houston even canceled the first day of cool -- school for monday. steve is tracking where it's headed for us and it has the potential to gain more strength. >> over the warm golf waters. the strongest storm to make landfall in 12 years. long time. thelated updated information shows the maximum winds of 80 miles per hour. he has wind gusts of 105 miles per hour. the storm is now moving north, northwest at 10 miles per hour. expected to make landfall as we move in to late, late friday night. and early saturday morning. as a category three hurricane. with the winds at around 120 miles per hour. after that, it is not going to move a lot. that is why some areas may see upward of 20 to 30 inches of rain. so a lot to watch out for. we are willing to keep you updated on abc7 over the coming days. back home we go for

ing for missing sailors. jonathan: the recovery efforts are still underway but tonight we learn two sailors are from the area, from maryland. one from gaithersburg. michelle: kevin lewis live there tonight with what we know about electronics, technicians second class kevin bushell. kevin? kevin: well, kevin bushell graduated from gaithersburg high school. now his friends are taking to facebook. sharing their fond memories. one saying and i quote -- "love you like a brother. and i wish i would have found a way to say that more often." >> it looks like him. >> this gaithersburg woman never met kevin bushell but lives only a few doors down from the missing u.s. navy sol lor father. >> my kids like to play outside. they have cute dogs so they always go there and play with the dogs. they are very, very friendly neighbors. >> on monday, an oil tanker collided with the uss john

flooding two levels of living quarters. nine sailors including bushell remain missing. today navy divers searched the mangled maze of corridors and rooms. on board the 505-foot destroyer. we have learned that bushell graduated from gaithersburg high school in 2009. his parents are divorced. but both still live in gaithersburg. his mother is the deputy clerk in rockville and his father operates a home improvement business. both grieving privately. >> i don't want to imagine. this is a difficult thing. >> friends further explain that bushell is married just before this accident took place. his wife posted on facebook. so tragic. live outside gaithersburg high school, i'm kevin lewis, abc7 news. jonathan: at the same time, a baltimore native is among the missing sailors. timothy eckels grew up in carroll county. 23 years old and information systems technician, second class. the navy is calling off the search but still searching the ship to find any that are missing. michelle: a carbon monoxide leak that happened this afternoon at a home on caldecott lane. all the victims are expected to be okay. theyry covered six to seven dogs and a man was taken into custody. recent raid happened on st. claire drive in temple

hills. this is for the bicyclists out there. there is a lot of them. this is the beginning of a troubling trend out on the road. "7 on your side" with startling new numbers about the bicyclists being killed while out riding. transportation reporter brianne carter is live in arlington with the new data. brianne: jonathan, take a look behind me. we have one there just across the way. of the bicyclist across the street even more. this is a popular intersection in arlington. but according to the new data it's not the intersection necessarily they need to watch out for. it's everywhere else on the road. >> you have to be on your toes and be careful. >> judy is an avid cyclist. today choosing to ditch the car and hop on a bar and run an errand. but there is a troubling trend that comes to riding on two wheels. according to a new study out today the governor's highway safety association the recent data shows the bicyclists deaths are up 12%.

are up 7%. >> i have had several near misses. the troubling trend shows a majority of crashes involving cyclists and cars aren't happening at the intersections. but rather along the road. >> really, really scary. i don't want to give it up. >> the most hazardous time is at night with 53% of cyclists deaths happening between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. the most dangerous three hours from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. regardless of the time of year. 37% of the time alcohol was a factor for the cyclist or driver. >> the look of trail and signage or the look of a light. people are not paying attention. >> pairing road improvement with the public education and refining the crash data are among 30 recommendations they suggest should be done to reduce the numbers.

on the debt ceiling negotiations. the clo icking on a potential government shutdown and the president says the border wall is non-negotiable. president trump threatened to shut down the government and pull the u.s. after nafta. this comes as a new quinnipiac poll shows the majority of americans believes trump is a divider, not a uniter. >> it goes straight to trump's vulnerability. he was a businessman. he will make government work. he will bring people together and run it like a business. if we go to a situation and the government is shut down due to threats from the president it makes it harder to move forward. michelle: the president has preemptively blamed the democrats for the possible government shutdown but minority leader nancy pelosi points out republicans control the white house and both chambers of congress. jonathan: cherry blossom season is behind us. it was a meager one at that. the national park service is working right now to get ready for the influx of the visitors to s

it's the strongest part of the storm. this likely to produce jairzs that are upward of 30 inches of rain. this is located off 300 miles off the coast of texas. maximum winds at 85 miles per hour. the gusts at 105. it will increase moving through the next 24 hours or so. here is the latest update that came in at 5:00. we get another one at 8:00. another more substantial one tonight before 11:00. coming ashore late tomorrow night. early saturday morning. look what happens it just spins around for the day on sunday and monday. by tuesday, 1:00, it doesn't move very far with winds at 40 miles per hour. how much rain are they expecting down there? i said upward of 20 to 30 inches. look at bay city, texas. this model puts it at 27 1/2 inches of rain. head back home now. things are quieter around here. it will stay that way for the next several days.
