the storm surge could be as high as six to 12 feet. >> take a look at this scene from the space station. harvey's effects are already being felt along the coast. a full day ahead of landfall. and texas and louisiana will be feeling the storm days from now. >> forecasters are calling harvey a life-threatening storm that poses a great risk. and residents are taking it seriously, boarding up and getting out. abc's jessica willie is there. >> reporter: hurricane harvey churning in the gulf of mexico and gaining strength, expected to make landfall near corpus christi early saturday as a powerful category 3. >> it's getting stronger and stronger. >> reporter: from texas to louisiana, to mississippi, people loading up and laying out sandbags, preparing for more than 35 inches of rain in some places. >> that's a lot of flooding. >> reporter: and a storm surge up to 12 feet. >> we need people to be aware. >> reporte

>> you can see the wind picking up, and harvey's still well off the coast. as a result, you may realize that some schools and colleges have already started classes for the fall semester. others are getting ready, but nearly all have canceled activities today. >> and houston wasn't expected to resume classes until monday, but officials aren't taking chances. with heavy rain forecast for after the hurricane, students and teachers are getting an extra day of summer vacation. >> we want to make sure that we have clear roads, and more than anything, with 216,000 students and 31,000 employees, we don't want to add that additional element to the transportation scene and have our emergency responders be complicated by even more people out on the road. so we want to make sure that our families have enough time to be able to take care of their families. so we decided to make at that call early. >> and private and parochial schools as well as colleges and universities in the area will

there are no athletic activities scheduled throughout the weekend. >> and ten of the smallest and sickest patients in corpus christi are being evacuated. the hospital is worried power outages may disable their ventilators. they're on their way to a children's hospital in ft. worth. >> harvey's greatest threat isn't so much from the wind as from the water. >> justin povick is here with the details. good morning, justice. >> kendis and linda, thanks and good morning to you. dangerous hurricane harvey still churning its way to the north and west this morning. a strengthening hurricane. we're looking at hurricane warnings here setting up shop from corpus christi north and east. tropical storm warnings from houston to galveston. expect impacts later on today. landfall late tonight to early saturday morning. and this is expected to become a major hurricane as we go throughout the daytime hours, making landfall as a major hurricane.

big impacts in terms of beach erosion, dangerous surf, power disruptions and damaging winds. one to two feet of rain as we go into early next week. and we're also talking about heavy rainfall throughout south and central florida into the late week hours as well. >> two major areas of concern there. thank you. and of course we'll have much more on harvey's path in the next hour. but first politics. we're getting word that president trump is likely going to end daca, the program began during the obama administration to protect undocumented immigrants who came to the u.s. as children. >> senior administration officials say the president could make the announcement very soon. he is facing a september 5th deadline of sorts. that's when at least ten states say they'll sue the government to end the program. jared kushner is trying to revive a possible peace deal between palestinians and israelis.

he held separate meetings yesterday with benjamin netanyahu and mahmoud abbas. the white house says both meetings were productive, but so far, there's no evidence of a break through. several white national protests and counter protests are scheduled for this weekend. one of the biggest rallies expected in san francisco on saturday. organizers of the freedom rally say it's for moderates. but some california politicians say it's a white supremacist event. they are worried about violence as several groups are planning counter protests. and on the same day in the other side of the country, knoxville, tennessee, white nationalists are protesting the possible removal of a confederate statue. amazon is set to deliver a gift to whole foods customers. they finalize their $13.7 billion buyout of the supermarket chain monday. once the deal is complete, amazon says it will cut prices on a number of staple items, including eggs, beef and bananas. amazon has plans to offer discounts to prime members who

shop at whole foods. the lives of hundreds of dogs were likely saved after they were airlifted from puerto rico. they faced a grim future because shelters are generally overcrowded there. the airlift was organized by animal welfare advocates. they were sent to florida, north carolina and new york. as you know, more than a few homes have hidden gems, but not that many homes have hidden houses inside them. >> a home inside the home. kevin kemp and jennifer alexander were set to demolish a home. outside columbus, ohio. then they discovered something so cool hidden underneath the walls. >> it was the remnants of a log cabin. dating back to at least the 19th century. >> i grabbed a piece, pulled on it, and it came off. and i said larry, i think that's a log. so i walked over and pulled off another piece. and that's what we found. we found, i said i think we have a log
