to a tropical storm. one death confirmed. catastrophic flooding is expected. abc's lana has the very latest on harvey. reporter: good evening. no more, butvey is tropical storm harvey, even it is stalled, continues to bring its fair share of problems to the region. talking about nearly 500 flights being cancelled here in houston. plenty of wind and rain still to come. when hurricane harvey roared into shore... it brought with it wind of 130 miles per hour. reported asrges high as 6.6 feet. the storm's path, residents of texas, mississippi and louisiana, getting hit the hardest. christi, punishing winds pulled

harvey, coming up in just a bit, look at your extended forecast. kimberly, back to you. >> molly, thank you. happening now, the american red is mounting a massive relief effort. ourns of volunteers from area are already on the ground in texas. more on the way. ryan is live now in fairfax where emergency vehicles are getting ready to deploy. ryan? reporter: kimberly, those already setting up shelters. some have been there for days. more are on the way. the americanhome, red cross is activating its emergency response vehicles. tomorrow.heading down and they are expecting this to be a very long recover effort. southeast texas is battling a one-two punch. a direct hit from hurricane harvey and now fears of catastrophic flooding. today, volunteers with the cross, national capital

emergency response vehicles and helphead south with the massive relief effort. >> at this point, we have almost 2,000 people in shelters down there. reporter: dozens of volunteers are mobilizing. call late last night. she's packing up and flying to houston to help manage a shelter. >> no matter how little sleep you get or how much extra work somebody is always better off when you're finished. that's why you do it. winds leveledey's buildings, ripped apart roofs and heavy rains still drenching the coast. >> we're just now getting our hands about how large this disaster is. where i'm at, i know it's huge. reporter: the national capitol theon has had a team on ground since tuesday, bringing food and supplies. cardin talking to us by phone from corpus christi. >> what we're dealing with in arpus christi is pretty much widespread power outage, which means there are no businesses no gas stations, no places to get

harvey. it haseakened -- weakened to that tropical storm. but as the slow-moving weather rain on themping gulf coast, the concern now turns to widespread flooding. now moving east towards houston and that's where we find lana zack. you're going to be sitting in place for a little while. how long? reporter: well, we understand that the rain is going to through probably about wednesday. so many flights have been cancelled. 500 here in the houston area. that thisrstand weather system now, especially just has slowed, it's going to continue to pound us with rain, and that's where flooding becomes a danger. >> have you heard about tornadoes reported on the ground near you? we're getting information about now.coming in just reporter: yes. we know that we were under a earlier in the day. and that connu

so we're all going to be very aware of that, watching for it. some of the damage that we have ground here in texas actually resembles tornado-like are areascause there that are just completely devastated, then other areas that look relatively fine. but tornadoes are going to be a problem. torrential rains are going to be a problem. if hurricane harvey isn't a thing anymore and it's just tropical storm harvey, is the potential for a lot of destruction. >> lana, do you know how the one and also howe, many rescues have already been made? understandell, we that the one fatality that has been confirmed as part of this storm was in freeport. that person died in a fire. again, this was part of what the was saying yesterday, when he told people to evacuate. at the height of this storm, if a problem, rescue teams cannot get to you. they could not assist. they could not get to this rs

fire, so unfortunately, that has resulted in a death. we know that rescue teams out there and looking to see that everybody is in fact safe. the red cross has confirmed -- or sorry -- the coast guard has least 18 people that they have successfully rescued. but there are still reports coming in from across the state and the gulf coast region, of people who they are looking for, that they wanted to make sure are safe. this is part and parcel for a storm system like this, where people might be okay needs to givejust it a little bit of time to make sure that rescue teams can do their jobs properly. we have a little bit of a break in the weather, that's exactly what they're doing. kimberly? >> all right. thank you so much. stay safe! let's check in with molly now. any residual impact on our area? >> looks like harvey isn't going area, but there is another

be our next named storm. so we have a lot going on today. those twoook at tropical systems. otherition, this disturbance near the florida coastline, a 40% chance of development over the next two days. so that's something we are definitely going to watch. here's a look at our satellite of harvey. notice the heavier rainbands. this is the area in particular we're watching very closely now, seeing reports on twitter of a tornado actually on the of the houston area. so that is one impact to the region. not only that, but flooding rain, upwards of about 30 inches for folks through wednesday. back in our area, we are a little bit more cloud cover. some of those clouds popping up forr partly cloudy skies tonight. temperatures really nice, if you have any saturday night plans. for mostking 70's right now. flirting with that 80 mark back towards frederick and also the metro. overnight lows dropping back into the 5
