lighting, tornadoes, sinkholes, thousands of rescues underway. the storm claiming several lives. authorities say this is just the beginning. witha zak is in houston coverage. >> houston is trying to stay afloat after 500 billions of gallons of water. sinkholes, tornadoes. this lake was once a runway at a houston airport. there have been thousands of requests for rescue. wave sheets, towels, anything to get our attention. >> the national weather service tweeting, this event is unprecedented and the impacts are unknown and beyond anything experienced. follow orders from officials. we saw drainage systems overrun, sprouting like fountains. i want to show you this. look at the water rushing out of cover.nhole

remove all of this excess rain and they are oversaturated. we are talking about four or five days of continuous rain. 911 call centers are inundated. this assisted living facility, seniors needed to be airlifted. major highways like the 610 loop, impassable. neighbors helping neighbors. used will be boards, rafts and a kayak to pull others to safety. >> last count, 11 people, six dogs, two cats. noah's ark for the last seven or eight hours. >> many making the best of a bad situation, even fishing and the river. that is the attitude we have heard from so many. texans are tough. babel get through the hurricane, tornadoes, flooding. the situation is serious. the national guard has been deployed and major hospitals are being evacuated.

i am here with molly, who will talk about this tropical storm in a moment. we have another one affecting the eastern seaboard potentially. >> we are very busy in the weather department, tracking harvey and what could potentially be tropical storm irma. this is the track as we go into the early half of the week. expecting to make that a tropical storm. you can see the impact along the eastern seaboard as we head into the early half of the week. you may wonder, how will this impact the d.c. area? it could bring us our first chance for rain as we go through monday and tuesday, looking to stay just off the coast line. tropical storm watch is in effect along the carolina coast. ofook at our satellite tropical storm harvey, continuing to bring heavy rainfall in the houston area, some places ending up with 15-25 additional inches of rain. we also have a tornado watch in effect for the houston area

already seeing reports on twitter of tornadoes there. there he serious situation along the gulf coast. unfortunately, no end in site from the rain. coming up in the extended forecast, we will track our chance for rain coming into the d.c. area. kimberly: a very active august. happening now, two teenagers from our area are headed to texas to help with the flooding. a swiftwater rescue team has been activated by fema. virginia task force one hit the road to houston. >> we are ready to get out the door and get down there and start helping people. >> 14 members with virginia task force one are being deployed and headed into harms way. a swiftwater rescue team getting the call from fema as southeast texas battles catastrophic flooding from harvey. >> they bring anything from basic soup and water

emergency equipment they need to be able to operate in a disaster. >> the international search and rescue team is making the 20 hour drive to texas with happen dozen boats and several trailers. it's afternoon, they got only a few hours to pack and loaded up life-saving supplies. >> i have been to a couple hurricane deployments. force response to natural disasters around the world. the team is getting emotionally prepared to head to houston, a city under siege. rescuers fielding thousands of calls, and the water is still rising. >> we want to make sure we can help to -- help people and help evacuate if that comes about. >> they are very experienced and well equipped and well trained to be a blue handle these -- to be able to handle these situations. >> they will be in texas for about two weeks. the timeframe could be morer

who are connecting or at a final destination in houston. each one of these people in line have a unique story to tell. 9:00 a.m.m is, around today, united airlines suspended all operations at george bush international in euston. that is its second-largest hub in the entire united system. we are talking hundreds of flights impacted. hundreds of flights in the air had to be diverted to different airports. dulles has received four flights, one from amsterdam, one from peru, one from argentina, one from brazil. these are major jets, boeing 777, and these came in, went through customs, and were sent to the main terminal. now, ticket agents are trying to get them to their next destination. if your destination is outside houston, you may

kimberly: continuing team coverage of tropical storm harvey. texas, really taking a beating. images coming out all day, jaw-dropping. in some cases, heartbreaking. rescue after rescue all day. michael joins us live with a closer look at what is happening on the ground in houston right now. how are you faring out there? >> kimberly, we are getting a break in the rain, although it has been raining off and on for most of the afternoon. we are just off i-10, a major way forced to shut down. you can see the water star

in the distance, you can see the orange sign, the floodgates, but you can't tell the numbers on it because the water is so high. my best guess, i would say its feet, because you can see the top of an suv there, one of the many disabled vehicles scattered across the city. kimberly: have officials backtracked and said, maybe we should have made these evacuations mandatory? asked thatr was question. he said he made the right call by not evacuating. forecasters didn't expect the rain to hit houston with this much intensity. once they realized how much rain they would be getting, the mayor said or sing and evacuation at that point would make a bad situation even worse, because there is somewhat what are on the roads right now. it is difficult to navigate the city, so causing gridlock by forcing people out at this point could've made the situation much worse. kimberly: michael locklear, giving us a birds eye view of the pond on the
