countless images from texas. people sleeping on mattresses at a furniture showroom in houston, between shifts of rescuing people on the floodwaters. jonathan: a rescue work carrying a victim on his back, wading through the water. the owner of the boat went to the area to help those in need. he said seeing the devastation touched his heart and made him want to do something. nancy: 7 on your side is working with the american red cross to help those impacted by the storms. the phone banks tonight raised more than $40,000 for harvey relief. >> we've got over a thousand volunteers on site, more streaming in every single -- all stop and we need your help, financial donations. we need to get supplies and resources down there. everything that can help will

people who said they were just rescued. arenow those were rescued continuing to flag down national guard troops. them flying overhead in helicopters and they are so grateful to be on dry ground. there is some good news according to the city of houston. officials say this is the first time they have a glimmer of hope because the water levels in many of the bayous and reservoirs are beginning to recede. we had been talking about this for days on end, and we saw for the first time since i've been kere thursday the sun pea through the clouds, and it was a moment of hope. nancy: you had mentioned the water levels. report about the levees being breached. what is the current situation right now? lana: officials have been trying to do some planned

reservoirs and dams that have been stretched to their limits. with the water level starting to lessen they get to amount of planned releases. every time they release the water, we know that additional homes get flooded. all of this is good, and we are hearing for the first time some of the highways and roadways that were previously impassable are starting to be uncovered for the first time. all of that said, it is still a dire situation. there are still rescues ongoing, still homes being flooded, and so many evacuees by the thousands are in desperate need of help. nancy: and what is the current status of the evacuees? are they finding shelters as they need to be? lana: they are, but the shelters are past their --

their intended capacity. most evacuees, they were originally planning on taking and 5000 people. it will been streaming in by the hundreds. right before our eyes, we saw 3000 turn into 5000 turn into 9000. at last count there were more than 9000 people at the convention center in houston. they have been hoping to alleviate some of the pressure on the shelters by opening more, churches and mosques and other community centers. for a lot of people, they have lost everything. even after the flood water start they will not be able to go back home or pick up their lives where they left them thursday. it will be a long road ahead. nancy: thank you very much. jonathan: for the latest information on hurricane harvey, find out ways to help the
