spike in sales in our batteries, lanterns, generators and our plywood. >> reporter: governor rick scott issued a state of emergency as irma barrels through the caribbean with possible landfall in south florida. overnight on twitter scott said he spoke with president trump who offered the full resources of the federal government. also cites puerto rico where hurricane warnings are already posted. the storm is expected to hit there tomorrow and abc's linzie janis is there. >> reporter: the national guard has been activated. schools have been closed and workers across this island have been ordered to cut their day short so they can get ready. >> reporter: in the u.s. virgin islands fema is sending supplies in giant containers and the coast guard has already evacuated 60 people. airlines are also preparing with most carriers waiving fees for flight changes in the caribbean. american airlines is also preemptively canceling flights from miami to st. kits and st. martin's starting today and cruise ships are rerouting to dodge the storm.

kicking into high gear and local officials have made removing all the debris from flooded homes a top priority. the problem is there's just so much of it. meantime, in beaumont, texas, the national guard is still searching flooded neighborhoods for people stranded in their homes. and working to repair the city's water treatment plant is moving forward but residents still cannot drink the tap water. now let's take a closer look at your weather. a line of storms that's making its way east overnight. it stretches from nashville through the ohio valley and into central new york. it's also bringing heavy rain, strong winds, hail and isolated tornadoes. later today, it will hit the east coast stretching from maine to maryland. cities like new york, philadelphia and washington could get several inches of rain and break out the warmer clothes. the cold front moves through with temperatures much cooler than it has been in the last few days. get out that

a microburst that included an 80-mile-per-hour wind gust caused chaos in southern california. beach umbrellas were sent

in santa barbara. the storm downed trees and pourpower lines. no injuries reported. that is helping crews get a ham on the largest wildfire in the history of los angeles. the la tuna fire burned more than 7,000 acres and destroyed at least four homes. fire officials say there's no active fire left but they do warn that high winds could start it up again. over in montana mandatory evacuation notices have been issued for at least 70 homes. families in the city of plains are being threatened by sheep gap fire. the wildfire has doubled in size since saturday to nearly 10,000 acres. at least 20 wildfires affecting more than half a million acres are burning throughout the state. and a frightening scene at one of tokyo's main airports just this morning. flames were seen firing out of an engine on a japan airlines plane after takeoff bound for new york. the pilots reported a bird strike which probably caused the flames. the plane with about 250 people
