apart by the storm. jonathan: we are hearing that and we learning that irma may be intensifying. we have team coverage tonight of the storm and what comes next. stormwatch7's chief meteorologist doug hill is tracking irma tonight. who would have thought it's getting stronger. doug: the pressure is a subtle drop of central pressure but it shows a tendency. it is tightening up and getting perhaps stronger. wind speeds remain the same. 185-mile-per-hour sustained winds. gust to 225. now moving northeast coast of puerto rico. it is off the coast to the northeast by 50 miles but there are still big winds and waves there. i want to expand it out. to show the context here. here is the dominican republic. you lose puerto rico there. it disappears a little bit. but they are lashed by the high winds and waves. what will happen here in the next several days is still up to questions. the models are clear here. keeping on west/northwesterly track until late friday and then it will make a

of the possibilities. they can make a turn parallelling the coast. scraping the coast of florida. making landfall in other places around thing west or the left after that. things that we don't know yet. we know this. the official track has been steady. keeping the center close to southeast florida and along the coast and making landfall somewhere. but it could be either side of the cone. the closer we get to friday night, the closer we will see the margin shrink in. we will get in the next 36 hours or so a much more predictable path for possible landfall and the land interaction. millions of people potentially affected here. that is why it is making headlines and the states are taking decisive action ahead. we have more in a little bit. jonathan: it's a scary storm. thank you. as irma bears down on the continental united states we are seeing more and more scenes like this. look at the rows of the cars right now. in florida, they say listen, the tolls don't worry. you can get out of here. b

out there in florida. meteorologist josh knight is tracking that side of the story. everyone is doing the right thing getting out of the path of the storm but they are doing it at the same time. josh: exactly. that is what makes the evacuations early so important. this is a a graph here. here is florida. this shows the millions of people along the coast that could be affected by a storm like irma. so people need to get the early start. on top of it, a lot of people have never gone through that. more than 4 million people moved to florida in the areas in the last 16 years. they have never been through this and that leaves a lot of people needing to gas up and stock up. that is leaving the highways jammed as well. they are having trouble stocking up on water and food. seeing the damage that irma has done in the islands. many people are boarding up to protect what they can before heading out of town. officials are trying to give people a point of reference and they are hoping using the name hurricane andrew will get

and others are on to the next mission. >> four members never made it home. they are in a tractor trailer like this one. they got the call to go from texas to alabama and stage for hurricane irma. >> we want to make a difference in their lives. >> in rockville, cheryl conner, abc7 news. michelle: virginia task force one is irma bound tonight as you heard. the team returned home last night after more than a week in the houston area. this time, 80 members of the team are now headed south to alabama where they will wait to see where they are needed. jonathan: they do great work. as to the path of recovery after hurricane harvey, the path includes a gruesome task. emergency responders are going door to door searching for both survivors and bodies. people who didn't leave and died. as we came on the air the death toll risen to 70 people. the number is likely to go up. congress is poised to approve $8 billion in aid in a measure to raise the debt ceiling through the end of the year. the measure will likely include fundi

last month's violence at a white nationalist's rally in charlottesville. later on this month, charlottesville will host to a concert aimed at healing. the dave matthews band, justin timberlake and ariana grande are among those expected to perform. the concert is free but people are encouraged to donate to charities benefiting victims of last month's violent crashes. jonathan: and national cathedral voted to remove -- and they charlottesville voted to remove statue of two confederate generals. it's become a flashpoint for violence that we saw last month and now national cathedral is joining the list of the groups stripping symbol of the confederacy for decades. if you look closely at the stained windowed you would see confederate flags. now they pay tribute to two generals in a scene that includes the flags but amy aubert shows us that it is all changing

we feel this is appropriate and the right thing to do. amy: once removed the windows make their way back to the cathedral. >> i'm looking for a place to display them in educational way for people to see. amy: there is no telling what will replace the windows or when that will happen. they are looking for input from people locally and across the country. in northwest, amy aubert, abc7 news. michelle: back now to tracking hurricane irma. oom serene scene at the heart of the storm. air force reserve hurricane hunter captured the image overnight of the moon seen directly through the eye of the storm. you know what that tells you? how wide the eye of the storm is. jonathan: compare that to the incredible images of destruction that we have been seeing coming in as a result of the storm. this was puerto rico. other caribbean islands are also getting in. this is a live picture from a storm chaser, meteorologist brett adare in san juan. they are dealing with the

strong winds. you talk about the eyes. when you cover hurricane it's crazy. all of a sudden it's mayhem and then it gets quiet and it will last an hour or two and then the backside comes and starts over again. michelle: we defined eye is not a good sign. doug: no. it shows how concentrated and how powerful it is. three hurricanes. the first time in seven years we have three at one time. kati nash gulf of mexico headed to veracruz, mexico. hurricane jose just starting out. only like a day and a half and two days behind irma and irma doing its thing. let's get started. a lot of ground to cover. give you the most important information. cloudy and drippy conditions out there. light rain for most of the day. this is associated with a cold front that will bring dramatic change in our weather for five days. five days of sunshine and the temperatures in the lower 70's. gorgeous. cool in the 50s and the lower 60's. 64 are the

of clouds. moving east. it's making its way to pittsburgh. skies are clearing there. overnight it will clear out and be in fine shape. the rain will come to an end. 60's for the everything. 50's for the morning in many places. this is it. thursday, friday, saturday, sunday and monday. the same forecast all the way through. plenty of sunshine. irma has sustained 185 miles per hour gusting to 22 a. the pressure is lower, the lowest it has been. that is showing that the storm is getting bigger. maybe winds won't get stronger be you can see the strong, the much larger storm. that is the one tracking steadily to the west/northwest. right now at 16 miles per hour. the latest track from the hurricane center shows generally a consensus among many models. we call these spaghetti plots. west/northwest of cuba through the bahamas and making a turn to the north. it will turn up the coast to

florida, east of florida? all those are possibilities. that is why in the forecast action they put the cone out there. it's always important not to stare at the middle of the line. this category four hurricane will hit miami. maybe it will. there are chances it can come up come up the west coast and the east coast. chance it may brush south florida and make landfall farther north. there is no way to know yet. we will in the next few days the track will become clearer. tomorrow is spectacular weather. through the weekend is spectacular. tomorrow night, nats back 17 games ahead of the marlins. it's still fun to watch them and look forward to october. the next seven days plenty of sunshine. we will get tuesday and wednesday if there are any effects from irma which are weaker nontropical storm by then. those are the times.
