>> the red cross has dozens of volunteers in texas and all are watching irma and we see disruptive images coming in any disaster operation center. the track, breaking records and going towards florida. the purple is the catastrophic damage that it could cause. at home, the red cross is getting prepared with a team of volunteers and staff being sent to the carolinas in the next two days. the regional operations center here has been extremely busy. fielding calls and reaching out to government partners as irma rips through the caribbean and goes to the floor because. -- florida coast. the regional director just got back from texas and saying they are being trained to set up shelters in case they have to be sent south. are getting our forces mobilized for potential landfall or affect any national capital region. we

investigation underway after a police officer struck and killed an elderly man riding a motor scooter. police released the name of the person who died, the victim is of kensington. the officer involved is an eight year veteran, robert farmer. john has more on this deadly collision. crash, montgomery county police say the driver of the motor scooter was 74 years old and leaving this neighborhood off of monterey drive in wheaton, maryland, going to veirs mill road when he was attempting -- that is when he was struck by unmarked police vehicle. a police officer involved was on duty. this chilling video, the bloom odors due to against the front of the car. damage tot front end the black unmarked car. because unknown. --

police are talking to witnesses who say the motor scooter did not have tags for likes on. -- or lights on. unclear if the police officer was responding to a call. >> he stops his cruiser and exit the vehicle. that the driver was injured on the roadway. he immediately rendered first aid and called for assistance. >> the driver was rushed to the hospital where he later died. police trying to put this together. the officer is on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. john gonzalez, abc news.
